Stop Getting Cheap Looking Shots! Color Science Finally Explained
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Color science in film explained so simply a kindergartner gets it:
www.cinemagrade.com
Okay well that's a stretch, I doubt I could explain this to my 6 year and she get it but still...
...it can be intimidating and overwhelming having certain terminology in filmmaking thrown around like:
- color science
- color profile
- color space
You know it's important, but you're kind of like, "Nah I think I'll just stick to what I know."
But that is a mistake because even having a very basic understanding of color terms as it relates to capture and delivery will greatly impact the look of your films.
That is why I wanted to put together a video that explains and distills all this down simply so you only learn what you absolutely need to know...
...then apply this understanding for better looking films.
If you have question, please ask away in the comments.
Daily I'm on here answering questions.

Meanwhile, I'm here 25K into my college education and coloring has yet to be explained this way. Intellectuals take something simple, and make it complicated. Artists, take something complicated and make it simple. I thank and appreciate you good sir for making this sooooooooo understandable.

One question I never seem to find answer to: Do you HAVE to shoot LOG (or other flat profiles) in order to colour grade and use LUTS, or can you grade footage shot in standard profiles as well? I am a Sony shooter.
@noligrutas
3 жыл бұрын
If you’re wanting to really push, pull and color your footage, then shooting in LOG is a must as it retains the most information. Test it out yourself. Shoot in LOG and see how far you can push color and exposure, then shoot in a standard color profile and try the same. The standard color profile is baked into the image and won’t allow you as much play until the image crumbles.

Inside Cinema Grade’s color management menu, inside display you can choose between p3, srgb, rec709 and rec2020, so technically you can work in HDR but I’m not quite sure how that interacts with FCPX or Premiere color management.

I've found that V-log on my Panasonic S5 gets this magenta banding kind of thing once I apply the default conversion lut, sometimes it is noticeable without the lut. Another problem I have encountered is a green iris around my image when shooting in v-log however I think this is due to the vignette compensation.

That sounds more like a malfunctioning sensor than a color grading issue. Don’t try to fix it in post, get the camera checked out by a specialist or go thru the camera settings to see if there is indeed a setting that is messing with the image.

Set target output to Rec709 or whatever you’re delivering to and then actually test the different input color spaces to see which one or camera gives you the best result.
Hello bro! But over saturation of colors is a problem or not much? For example, I see your video well colored with intensity.
Thanks for the great tips I have a quick question I have I Mac I use the right now to edit my videos and I would like to get an external monitor what would you recommend in the price range of 350 to 400?
@colorgradingcentral
3 жыл бұрын
Look for monitors that cover 100% or close to 100% of the color space you are working at. Rec709 for broadcast, sRGB for web, etc. Then look for the brightness of the monitor which is measured in nits. Technically for SDR grading you only need 100 nits but unless you are in an absolutely dark environment 100 nits are going to look very dim. Look for at least 350 nits.
