That being said, if the teachers just shove you things to learn then there's not really any hope in understanding and homework is doubly redundant lmao but like, when im learning calculus or linear algebra, I think to myself that I understand it until I'm faced with an actual problem, then I'm like "Oh, I actually didn't" if you were just kidding though then whoops

  • @bane2201

    @bane2201

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TheNameIsNobody I think that you're referring to topography. Topology is different, I'm going to try to give a simple explanation about what it is. The central idea behind topology is that there are some properties about an object that hold true if you stretch it or twist it. Imagine a coffee mug made out of clay - there's one hole in it (the handle). I could stretch that clay into the shape of a donut without adding a new hole in it. Because the number of holes in a coffee mug and a donut is 1, in topology they can be considered "the same". But I can't take a brick and turn it into a coffee mug just by stretching it - there's no hole in the brick. That means in topology it's different than a mug or a donut. Topology deals with a LOT more than that, but that's the best example I can give for the type of problems topology deals with. Honestly, topology is so weird it's difficult to even describe in layman's terms. Also, what's your native language? Just wondering!

  • @TheNameIsNobody

    @TheNameIsNobody

    Жыл бұрын

    @@bane2201 Oh yeah I did mistake it with Topography. But what is the purpose of Topology then? I know I can just search it on Google but since you study it you can give me a better answer, because it doesn't seem to focus on numbers, is it like philosophy? Also, to know my language, say my name.

  • @bane2201

    @bane2201

    Жыл бұрын

    @@TheNameIsNobody Just want to check - did you see the part of my comment that starts with "The central idea"? Sorry, I tried to write a bit of explanation but I'm not sure if it's showing up. For me it just shows "..." and there's no "Read More" button, so that part may have gotten cut off. Talking about the purpose of topology is _really_ difficult since there are many different areas within topology that people study and since there's a lot of weird terminology that I would need to explain. Also, topology is so abstract that a lot of it isn't useful in the real world at all. (That's one reason I decided that one class in it was enough.) So honestly, I can't really give you a good answer. I can give you an example of a problem that many people spent a _long_ time trying to solve, which might give you an idea of what people in the field are interested in. So, imagine a sphere and pretend I put a rubber band around some part of it. I can move that rubber band around so that it shrinks, and if I kept doing that it would keep shrinking until it became the "size" of a single point. I can't do that with a donut, though - if I had a rubber band that goes around it, I couldn't shrink the rubber band. Here's the claim that the problem made: if I took _any_ object for which I can shrink any rubber band down to a single point, would I be able to turn that object into a sphere by stretching it? The Poincare Conjecture is the same as that problem, except it asks about 4-dimensional shapes, not 3-dimensional ones. That's the problem I mentioned - a lot of people spent a long time working on it, and it was solved in 2002.

    @@andrasfogarasi5014 I don’t know if I agree with that. All we need simply the empty set to form all numbers. Further, from a less mathematical standpoint, we can fairly confidently say that across our universe 3 apples will always be 3 apples. We have assigned words to describe real, discrete quantities that would exist regardless of our labels. Also, complex numbers are widely used in electronics, so it’s not only used in quantum mechanics.

    They are as 'real' as real numbers right? In Pugh's book, he defines complex numbers by a kind of 'multiplication' • : R² × R² -> R² , where (x,y)•(x',y') = (xx' - yy' , xy'+yx') These tuples are formally 'complex numbers'.

  • @bacondog6862

    @bacondog6862

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@user_2793 I love Pugh's textbook, but I wonder how you came across it unless you took H104 at UC Berkeley. The complex numbers can be thought of as elements in R^2, but that does not mean that they can be handled in the same was as real numbers, as we cannot forget about the rather pesky i. It makes integration infinitely more annoying, but it also has a great many uses in physics where waves and thus imaginary numbers are prevelant. i is rather bizarre quantity, and so it would be silly to dismiss it in its entirety. This is why there is a course called Real Analysis that precedes Complex Analysis. If complex numbers could simply be handled in the same fashion as real numbers, there would be no need for two courses.

  • @user_2793

    @@bacondog6862 I heard about Pugh's book from an acquaintance who studies there. I agree with all your points, it's just that I wanted to 'demystify' complex numbers, cause I was always bothered that they were 'inconsistent' with the real numbers (the fact that negative numbers have no real square root). This was before I knew anything about Analysis, or how formal mathematical definitions work. I just wanted to clarify that, is all.
