Worth noting that the Wrangler and Gladiator all have 7.5" wide wheels with up to 285/70r17 tires (roughly 11.2" wide), including the Rubicon. The Xtreme Recon package (available on the Willys and Rubicon trim lines) has an 8" wide rim with a 315/70r17 tire (about 12.4" wide). So since those come from the factory like that (and anything that comes from the factory has to be pretty safe as it's subject to government regulation), an 8" wide rim is plenty to hold up to a 12.5" wide tire. But still, great video that explains why it's important not to go too wide or too narrow on your rims.

I've got a Gladiator Rubicon and am set on some 35x12.5R17 tyres and thought I needed to get 17x9.5 rims. Looks like 17x8.5 rims will do the job even better!

I'm running 37x12.50r17 on my stock mojave wheels and its just barely pinching the tire I'm thinking of going to 8.5 wide beadlocks.

@@ph4tboy nah, 9.5" is overkill for 12.5" wide tires. If you think you might want to go for 13.5" wide tires at some point go for the 9.5" wide but if you're going to be content with 12.5" wide then the 8.5" wide will be perfectly fine. I'm on 7.5" wide stock Willys wheels and run 35x11.5" tires and have aired down to 15 PSI and haven't debeaded a wheel (that was on a 2 mile trail in the woods, not super challenging).

And FWIW it looks like the HMMWV wheel is 16.5x8.25. and they run 37x12.5's so about 66% if my math is right.

If you already have a particular tire in mind, the manufacturer's website almost always has a chart that states the recommended range of wheel widths. This is really useful for knowing the narrowest rim width you can get away with for a given tire

I went with a 17x 8 for my 35x12.5 C Rated KO2’s. We have a lot of slippery terrain here (mud) I also like to drive this truck on long trips so this was my thought. Softer ride on road. Really low pressures for off road. We don’t get much tire damage here so harder sidewalks is just weight. I love my setup and I just transferred it to my new JL and it’s even better.

I can't wait for the BroDozer fad to finally go out of style.

@@djsonfire0001 A 'Brodozer' is a truck or SUV of some sort that is lifted beyond necessity with 20+" rims and tires that have ridiculously short sidewalls and a 'Mud- Terrain' type tread. They're basically useless in any 'off-road' situation, other than perfectly-flat / hard-packed ground.

In other words - lift kit, oversize wheels, off-road tires, hub spacers (because the oversize knobby tires and wheels aren't taking up enough parking already), light bar, and a trailer hitch. It'll never be intentionally taken off-road and the trailer hitch will never tow anything.

I feel like it won’t because people down south down have huge public lands and they don’t actually tow big trailers or have a bed camper. So they have to do up their truck somehow lol.

Stop Manufacturing Brodozer Tires! - - Should be a video about that, in my opinion. I worked as a tire technician / light mechanic on/off for over 30 years and recently did so again for the last seven months... The way that off-road truck tires have been bastardized into having a super-aggressive "Mud-Terrain" tread pattern, with too low of height in sidewall just confuses me. Take, for example - something like a 35x12.50R20 - or even worse - a 35X12.50R22. How in the hell can you 'effectively' air these down for more traction off-road, when the sidewall barely flexes? You want 20" rims? Run at least a 40" tire. Want a 22" rim? Run at least a 44" tire. A lot of these ridiculous rims are way too nice-looking for any type of rugged off-road / trail use. A lot of these ridiculous rims are reverse mount. Some of these ridiculously low-profile / alleged 'Mud-Terrain' tires can only be aired up to 65psig - even though they are marked 'Load Range E' (10ply). So for those of you whose trucks require over 65psig in the Front or Rear to keep those damn Tire Pressure Monitors from tripping the light on your dash - this is something to think about. Like that Deep Dish look on the front face of the rim? - They're probably gonna have to be static-balanced, as there isn't enough area between the inner and outer edges of the INSIDE of the rim to do a proper dynamic high-speed balance. A lot of these ridiculously oversized rims are reverse-mount - so make sure the shop your getting them installed and/or repaired at have only an experienced technician working on them. A lot of these rims are not 'hub-centric', which means that you're sissy-la-la spline drive lug nuts are the only thing not only holding the wheel to the hub, but also bearing ALL the weight of that side of the truck. Then, you'll be in your local Tire/Service center frequently to have them 'Checked for Balance' way too often. If you're 'upgrading' to a much larger / much wider / much heavier tire & rim combo - then maybe you should be upgrading to factory struts and/or shocks as well. If some poor schmuck has to use a Bead Blaster to get the beads to seat - your rim is too damn wide. Trimming fenderwells, Reverse mounting, TPMS sensors, heavy AF, airing tires up/down between 60-80psig for rotations, installing adhesive balance weights on rims brought in covered in mud, grease, sand and brake dust... Yeah... I'm no longer doing any of that. If your truck is a daily driver and/or is going to be used frequently to make grand entrances and exits to your local construction sites - then by all means, pick your silliest low-profile BroDozer. But if you EVER want to do some serious off-roading in the mud, dirt, sand, snow and rock-climbing - please don't pick a BroDozer on a ridiculously wide rim. And please don't air ANY tire down below 25psig off-road and then drive home at that pressure on paved roads because your too lazy or too cheap to invest in an on-board air compressor to re-inflate them. And I don't care if you buy the most highly recommended / most expensive / allegedly toughest 'Mud-Terrain' there is on the market - - Expect that SOB to blow out at any give moment if you are aired down below 25psig... So don't cry and bitch and moan about how that tire or any tire is a POS, because YOU ran it into or up against something that blew it out... or ran it way below 25psig frequently, for long periods of time. I think you're best bet would be to talk to or meet in person, any one of the experts like the staff at TrailBuilt and be VERY specific about what you expect out of your tires.

I run the stock steel 16x6.5 wheels on my Dodge Ram with 39x13 tires. Published size is 325/85-16 but the tape measure says 39x13. I really like the skinny wheels

My '81 Bronco is also my daily. 75-80% of my tire width is what I prefer on my wheel width. I run KO3s, and so the stock turbine 8" wide rims do well with the 33x10.5 tires.

285 75R17 with an 8" rim for me. Your equation puts me at 8.415" wheel, so my 8s are fine and never had an issue.

The Wrangler Xtreme Recon package has an 8" wide wheel with a 12.5" wide tire so anywhere from 8-9" is good.

been running 35/12.50/17 on my jeeps for years 10 inch wide rim with zero problems but lowest I run air pressure is 15 lbs with zero issues since about 2008 on my JK and now my JL

35x12.50 15 on 15x10s honestly work really well. Good wide pad on the ground, not too squishy when aired up and on driving the canyon roads, and haven’t blown a bead (yet)

I have a LT295/55r20 on a factory 20x9 and it looks awesome for a 20 inch rim on a 4x4 truck, at some point I’m going with 17x9 rims and 285/70r17 tires, I like having a larger sidewall on my tires, that and it’ll match my spare tire, I upgraded my spare tire from a 265/70r17 to the LT285/70r17 on the stock steel wheel and looks a lot better that the 20’s do lol.

I went with 38.5x11x15's Super Swamper Boggers on my 93 4 runner for maximum traction and used an 8 inch wide wheel. But my intention was get some weld on beadlock kits so I didn't want them to wide for that deal.

I just buy the right tire and rim package. You can run any size tire and rim combinations. But if I’m going to need to air down then I’m using bead lock rims

35x12.50r15 on 10 wide wheels, yes I can't air down as far but I don't need to air down as far to get the contact patch as a 17x8.5 wheel 👍

37 x 13.5 mounted on 20x10’s for both looks and performance on V8 full size 4x4 trucks and SUV’s.

We have wheeler broncos (a 1974/ a 76 and a 78). running boggers and pitbulls: 18 wide x 39.5 tall x 15” rim. We use a 8.5 wide wheel and 10” wide wheels. They balloon out and we run 6-8lbs. We call em red neck beadlocks. Works great in the back woods of the PNW. Tough to drive down the hwy though.😅🏁

I just picked up a used set of 17x9 Mickey Thompson Classic ii's. I never air down off road as being a 2wd truck I avoid the rough stuff so I should be fine with a 295/70/17 then.

I,ve been off roading my 4x4 Trucks , Broncos , SUV,S since 1974 & I have learned >> 8 inch wide wheel works out the Best for wideth..I had only 1 ONE set of wheels 10 inch wide NEVER AGAIN 12:50 tire size..wobble + cupping etc.& wore out faster plus extra wear & tear front end suspension parts..Extra wide wheels / tires looks COOL but NOT VERY PRACTICAL !! 80% HIGHWAY DRIVING 60 >> 80 MPH. & ABOUT 20% OFF ROADING 20 >> 40 MPH

I love both of them. Wider and narrower. I have 16x7 black rhino boxer wheels. Before that, I use to run on 16x7.5 konig tandem wheels. It’s a shame I made a sacrifice by .5” width of the wide wheels (narrow), but I’m ok with that. I’m extremely happy about I have the deepest concave wheels for 16’s of 15+ offset vs. my previous konig wherls with a +40 offset.

I'm running 315x70r17 tires on a 2021 Jeep Rubicon XR. They are marketed as a 35" tire. I want to mount a larger tire but the next size up is 37". Why is there no 36" tire size?

Hows a 295/70r17 on a 17x9 rim? If I get a 17x8.5 rim, I would need spacers because its only available in a 0-offset as opposed to a -12 offset on the 17x9. Without this offset, I would rub

On my tacoma I'm running oem 16 inch wheels. With a p metric 11.2 inch wide 32.8 tall. 10 ply. Tire that's a 65 percent ratio. You say 75 percent is ideal. I'm going on a 100 mile off road trip. Do you think I'd be ok running 10 psi on obstacles and 13 psi the rest of the trip?

I got 36x13.5-17 irok on stock wheel with wheel spacer on my tacoma. Litteraly have no point on using beadlock, i'm able to air down to 5psi and never debeaded a tire

I’m running a 17x9 with 37/12.5/17. They fit good and I can air way down with no problem. If I had to do again I would probably go with a 17x10 though. The 9 kinda rounds the tire and makes it run more in the center of the tread on road causing center wear. A 10 will pull the sides out more and flatten the profile and make it wear more evenly across the tread

Narrow wheels , wheel bearing last longer .

I'm not an off road guy. I do hit dirt roads and run around some sketchy mountain trails. But not to the extreme of you. Me personally I run a 275-55 on my Tahoe. They are 20x9 I like a little meat outside the rim. Mostly because it really just drives better

I run a 18x9 wheels with 10.5-11" tire width. Just was looking to more closely approximate a performance on-road setup. The wheels are a type of beadlock so hopefully it counteracts that tendency to debead at low pressures. Currently XL285/60r18 but next tire will probably be LT275/65r18.

I personally really like the way 275/70/18 looks on some of the setups in our gallery! i got tires of narrow wheels on my truck because kept sinked in driveway mud and i went on got my self a set of 18r 10in wide and throw on 255/55/r18 tire and enjoy it no issues with mugs and one guy swing by ask want race i say sure so my ranger vs chevy 1500 and i just flew thur mud no issues with sinking or getting stuck and turn around saw chevy sink in mud and i was super laughing so hard and other guy show up with f350 diesel wide tire and sink ( i was dying of laughing too much) and they both where stuck trying get out n i tell them i will rip ya out of sink hole they say my truck cant pull them out say want bet? wanna bets? he say hahaha sure 100 dollars n agreed to it and put 50ft rope hitch to hitch and went full revving took off like rocket and throw them out of window and truck got out of mud hole and he got up and running get back in his truck with his face cover in muds LOL and he lost bet and pull both of them out just with ranger 2.3l and 50ft rope 🤣 😆 😂 😆 🤣 😂 ya need tire wider than rims to keep them on bean otherwise tire never stay on rims only thing i can think of 255 above for 10in wide rim it never came off (other funny thing about tire shop hate it because they machine aint wide enough tear tire bean off of rims and took one hours just get one tire off of rims with 6 worker lol)

Running a 37-13.50-18 on a 18x9 wheel. Kinda curious about the nitto ridge grappler in 37-11.50-18. I guess I’d run a 8” wide wheel

I run 7 inch wheels on 12.5 tires

At last! I have been saying this for years.

I'm looking at getting 8.5 inch wheels and 11.2 inch tires (Wide), this means I'll have 68.58mm of an over hanging tire, is this good or to much, or is it to less? What are your thoughts on that?

I'm sure you might have already thought about this, but just watch for rubbing when it comes to overhang. At 68.58mm, you may also experience a decrease in handling as well. We can't give you a specific answer as we don't know your state regulations or the vehicle you drive. Sorry, but people have done more in the past. Just be careful if you plan to go any bigger.

People need to post this video, along with your video on wide vs "skinny" tires on more truck and jeep forums and social media platforms. I see so many 20x10 and 22x10 etc wheels on trucks just for that "show truck" look. I know many people love the show truck style but its not functional and completely ruins the performance of a vehicle.

I've got 16x10 wheels, and can't find a tire that is wide enough without being 34" tall. I don't want huge sidewalls on this build, so what are my options?

16x10 is already a pretty beefy setup so it will be tough to find tires that don't hug the sidewall. I would maybe run 305's or 315's however it is a personal preference! The more sidewalls you have the more you can beat/work them…. Throw out them thin sidewalls tires … Remember : when you have to fly , the more sidewall you have the better the chances you get away….Stop buying bling tires to be caught ..

From my experience I air down to 10 psi with a 35x12.50x15 with a 15x10 wheel and have never broken a bead. I am a harsh driver go over small to medium whoops at 45-50 and rock crawl pretty advanced trails. So from experience I haven’t had any issues with lower psi then most run and wheel harder then most.

So my 285s on my 9” wheel is no good…?

A set of wheels is everything to a vehicle. You can have the smartest vehicle but if the wheels and tyres are crab, the whole vehicle looks crab. So, the correct tyre on the right rim is important.

@@TrailBuilt 35x12.50r17 BFG KM3(maybe K02 as well) do fit on a 17x7.5 wheel(they are 295/75r17). .2 per .5 inch wheel width change(10 to a 7.5) = 1 inch subtracted from the listed 12.5 inches = 11.5 tire width on a 7.5 width wheel. The TFL KZread channel had this setup on their Gladiator. On the other end of the spectrum is the 35x12.50r15 Maxxis Razr MT at 13.5 inches.
