Hi Jason, I’ll probably fall a bit outside of your usual demographic (60 in June), but perhaps you can boost my build too. I play 1440p medium/high Cities Skylines, Civilization 4 and 6, Transport Fever 2, Kerbal Space program, the Anno titles and a bit of Doom / Quake / Dukem / Wolfenstein when it’s time to make my mark. This pc is also my audio and video center. I have a budget of about $ 1000 and I want to go for medium/high 4K or ultra high 1440p. My current setup is a Dell T7910 workstation, with a couple of tweaks. MB Dell 0215PR - C612 PWR Dell 1300W stock PSU CPU Xeon E5-2667 V4 (2x) with stock coolers RAM 64GB PC4-2400 RDIMM (8 x 8GB Micron 19200T-R 1RX8) GPU Powercolor RX6700XT 12GB SCR LG 32UK550-B DVD Asus BW16D1H-U Pro SND EVGANu Audio + Mojo 2 DAC SSD 1 - 1TB Samsung PM9A1 M.2 Gen4 2 - 2TB Lexar NM790 M.2 Gen4 3 - 4TB Crucial P3 plus M.2 Gen4 HDD 1 - Seagate EXOS X10 - 10TB SAS 7200rpm 12Gbps 2 - Seagate EXOS X10 - 10TB SAS 7200rpm 12Gbps 3 - HGST HE12 - 12TB SAS 7200rpm 12Gbps 4 - HGST HE12 - 12TB SAS 7200rpm 12Gbps The easy answer would probably be to sell the RX6700XT and plonk in an RTX4080. I’d like to keep the noise down, there might be a better option than that somewhat noisy card. I have removed all the sheet metal from the case, it’s a skeleton system. That helps with cooling, but when the fans ramp up it’s noisier than I’d like. I’m not looking for a faster booting system, the SAS controler always needs about a minute to find the drives. The PCIe 3.0 lanes are the obvious elephant in the room, but fixing that means a new system. I’m not sure if PCIe 4.0 would make much of a difference in my use case. Perhaps populating all memory slots could make sense, the resulting 128GB of RAM would be a bit ridiculous though. I might go for 16 x 4GB, if that would make any difference. I’d love to hear what you’d do. Cheers, Arthur The Netherlands

That’s why I got a noctua cooler for my 5600x in 2021 even tho other coolers were better values, I can prolly keep it for a super long time. Plus high build quality and great manufacturer support. I would have to say beware the NZXT aesthetic bar. I wanted an NZXT H7 Flow originally. Even though the case is long enough for my GPU, that bar got in the way from fully seating in the PCI slot. I mention this, simply because I have the Hellhound 7900 XT and it is more narrow than the 7800 XT of the same model. I now have the H6 Flow, and without that bar there, I was able to have an NZXT setup. The only thing I couldn't justify with spending all the money on this NZXT stuff was the motherboard. 350 dollars for a B650? Just couldn't do it. Anyway, great video Jason! So glad the series is back!

Great video and channel. I've been thinking of building an AM5 system for gaming but not sure if I should wait for the new zen 5 release which is rumored to be released in a few months or just build upon the ryzen 7000 series cpu? Not in a rush since I have a really good AM4 build. The only pc parts I'd use for the AM5 build from my AM4 would be my corsair 1000w psu, reference radeon 6950xt, two m.2 drives and one SSD, oh and my awesome HYTE 60 tower.

That though has crossed my mind. Going from a 5600x to either a 5700x3d or 5800x3d is a pretty good price to performance jump. I'd just have to get some thermal paste and maybe a cpu cooler.@@PCBuilderChannel

I built my current rig in 2020, so I also used the (older) NZXT case featured in this video. While it could use an open front panel mesh for better airflow, it's still not bad. I've been incrementally upgrading my rig since 2020, starting with a better GPU and PSU, and thermals and overall airflow are well within safe operating ranges. I don't overclock anything. However, I would recommend adding as many fans as you can, and aim for a very simple Push configuration (air flows from front across CPU cooler and mobo and exhausts out rear).

I had a spare GTX 1080 gpu, an AMD Prism CPU cooler, some HDD's, a 750W modular PSU, and 16GB of DDR4 RAM left over from an old x470M rig with a bad Ryzen 7 2700X CPU, so I am using them to build a new mid range, 1080p gaming build. I purchased a: 1 - GIGABYTE B550M K AM4 MATX motherboard (not reusing the old x470M motherboard) 2 - DIYPC ARGB-Q3.v2-BK Black MATX case (because I was not going to reuse the full tower from the old system) 3 - AMD RYZEN 5 5600G (it was on sale for less than the 5600 and 5600X) 4 - FREE 16 GB DDR4 (a gift from Newegg, for purchasing the Ryzen 5). The new purchases today cost $276.97 (Newegg threw in a $10.00 discount because the CPU, Mobo, and Case qualified as a combo). That allowed me to get an extended warranty on the mobo and CPU for $22, and another $30 for Bluetooth and Wifi USB adapters. With tax, it all came in at $343.00.

I've been following this channel for a while, this series about boosting builds is great, I always try to follow the advices left along the videos. The only thing that I can't really compare are the prices. Here in Italy they're are a bit higher in € rather than $, is there by any chance a channel that has somehow the same format or talks about PC build in Europe? That would be awesome to know since I'm planning to build a new pc next month! 😄

@@MrAnimescrazy I mean I know a couple of Italian channels, but they just speak most of the times and they don't have a format like this one on PC Build. Btw my budget is 1300€ with around 130€ of amazon gift cards. Besides the Gpu, I almost have a complete build. Still unsure between 7800Xt and 4070 (considering used too) 'cause of a bit of a price gap between them; 2K is the target so both are fine for that. Don't know how much ray tracing I'm gonna use out if them, depends how games are gonna exploit it. I could even think that when I'm gonna change the GPU probably a nvidia is gonna sell faster and at a better price but that could be a bias

I got an old build that I just make minor improvements on every now and then. It's a 6yr. Intel i7 8700k that runs about the speed of life. It does great in competitive games like Call of Duty MW 2 & 3 but it's starting to see better days. The last upgrade was to replace a broke Nvidia 3080ti with a more budget conscious Power Color Hellhound 7900xt. These days, I like using it more than my workhorse i7 3770k. And I loaded it up with a lot software you normally don't want on a game machine. So as the clock ticks, I'll be checking you out for my future machine. Kudos, bud.

Jason, I built a new PC and you are going to kill me. I got a Lian Li case and the Lian Li fans LOL... they were pricey but wow they sure look amazing and run great! Got all my PC parts on black friday and saved a ton compared to prices today. 7800X3D, ASUS ROG Strix 670 E, 64 gigs DDR5 6000, Gigabyte RTX 4080 (found one for 980 dollars and its saving 600 bucks by not getting the 4090). Only thing I would do over is I should have gotten the 7900X3D for some of my other applications that rely on more cores. Oh well, I have an AM5 board so next year I can get a better CPU and an RTX 5080 or 5090 and sell my current cpu / video card. PS: The thermal grizzly pad for cpu cooling is amazing! @13:35 I am not about to say you don't know but, just in case others don't. Rust is a Unity game which relies heavily on CPU and Ram, more so than GPU. A 5600 CPU may be a bit too light even with 64gb of Ram for that as load times and FPS will take a big hit, especially if you play on modded servers. I know this because I am running a 5600 in my system currently and will likely upgrade to either a 5800x3d or jump even higher to a 7800x3d. I will say the build is good and should have no problems running the titles she was looking for.

  • @PCBuilderChannel

    @PCBuilderChannel

She wanted a number of games, and also 4 TB of storage so we're just trying to thread that needle. If just doing Rust then I'd look at a 7800X3D for sure, but the 7600 is a big upgrade over the 5700X which she had to begin with.

Im looking at building an all-round good performing PC for a reasonable price, somwhere around $2000 NZD ($1200 USD). I will most likely be playing at 1080p in the meantime, but may possibly upgrade to 1440p later on. Currently I've spec'd out the R5 7600 cpu (with the intention to upgrade to a R7 7700 later on) with the 7700 XT gpu. I know I could get away with the 7600 XT for 1080p, but im also thinking into the future. So with that in mind, would the 7700 XT be a sensible choice for my case?

For the 700 budget would you have flash the bios on the motherboard the b550m ds3h ac? If so is there a step by step video on how to do it? TIA. New to pc any advice is appreciated!

You shouldn't have to flash the bios, if you did need to you could watch our "how to build a pc" video for how to.

@PCBuilderChannel Thank you for the reply! I appreciate it! I have a quick question. I saw that the microcenter has a bundle at $320 ryzen 7 5800x Asus TUF B550 16gb of ram. Do you think it is a good deal?

I have just bought an rtx 2080 super used off of ebay for 200 pound , wondering if thats a good deal, but most importantly if it will actually be worth keeping it for a year or two? I upgraded from a 1650 super and this looked like the best gpu I could find for around that price. Would love any feedback that you guys have

About the storage you do need a lot of it now days. Modern games take huge amounts of it. My 2TB games drive is nearly full with 24 games installed onto it. And many of them are older that dont take some mutch space. Sure you can just install the few games you normaly play and so on. But its nice to have more of your games library at hand at all times. And that 2 TB drive does not fit my entire steam library not by a long shot. 😁 I have 2 gaming rigs both with 3TB of NVME storage and thats enough for me at the moment.

I think my gpu oddesy is finally over. My Pny 4070 xlr8 spent 4 weeks in RMA before I just got my money back. Would have liked a replacement instead.... So I found another retailer and have so far tried two Msi Slim 4070 Supers, and for now I'm keeping the 2nd one, as the first had just horrible coilwhine. This one has a bit of whine too, but I'm kinda worn down of the whole situation, so I think this one is within acceptable range. And if not, this retailer takes returns for 2 months, so I have some time to decide.

The only reason I went with the MSI b550m Pro-vdh when i built my rig is because i had multiple nvme m.2 drives and it supports 2. i agree that it's expensive for no real reason.

What the fps difference between a Ryzen 5 3600 and Ryzen 5 5600?

  • @PCBuilderChannel

Depends on the GPU. With a budget GPU, not much, but as you get to midrange GPUs the difference starts to jump up quite a bit.

The 1% lows and general latency will be better on the 5600 because on the single core complex on Zen 3. I'd pick it every time.

I definitely made a lot of the mistakes Jason talks about in this video. If I had to do it over again, I'd have gotten a Ryzen 5500 and a 7800xt. I went with the 5600x and the RX 6600. In my defense, it had been about 10 years since my last build. But Jason makes a LOT of sense here. If you're going for a gaming build, drop as much budget as you can into that GPU, get a less expensive CPU. There are lots of well reviewed cases and PSU's that are cheaper than the name brand stuff too. Wish I was watching your channel before my build a couple of months ago!

Thanks!!! I would say that the 5500 really can't support a 7800 XT, it just hits too much of a wall around the 7700 XT. We just dropped our Best CPU GPU Combo 2024 video so check that out. I don't think you did that badly on your build FYI, and in a couple years time you'll likely be able to upgrade the GPU.

Hi Jason! Thank you for tge tip on the 6700XT on the last video. I already bought one currently my R5 3600 and the RX 6700XT is working great! I'm definitely upgrading the RAM from 16gb to 32gb. I wanna ask as well, what is a good upgrade for my R5 3600 that would also work great on my current 6700XT? Mobo is B450m Steel Legend. I wanna stay AM4 for now.
