The string bag is convenient and compact. It was especially popular during the Soviet years. The classic version is large diamond-shaped cells, pulled together into handles.
I remember there were two types of nets: those woven from cotton threads, and they were large, and those woven from silk threads, their size was smaller. We also carried bread in glass bottles like these. I also remember how every year we went to my grandmother 300 kilometers away and brought all sorts of gifts in such a net, everyone saw what was inside and it didn’t bother anyone.
Then the onions were hung in these nets in the barn.
After a while there was a surge of new netting when white polypropylene twine appeared. It was used to knit not only nets, but also bags and baskets using various openwork stitches.
These days, the issue has become relevant again, plastic bags will soon be gone, and here is the solution: a reusable string bag. It is unlikely that women will want to walk around with translucent nets, where everything is on public display, but more closed and creative ones are welcome.
Today I will show an example of such a mesh, it is not only woven from threads, but also fabric is added.
1) First you need to decide on the material. I took calico and iris-type cotton threads. Then choose the size.
2) I cut out a strip of 25x70 cm from the fabric. I stitched the side seam.
3) Fold it in half and cut out 4x4 cm squares in the corners. Formed the bottom of the bag. I swept the seams.
4) Then I crocheted the edge. The hook must be thin so that it fits the threads and easily pierces the fabric. Fits size 1.5.
5) Next comes knitting, here you can choose any pattern, there are a huge number of patterns on the Internet.
6) My knitting consists of 2 rows. Which alternate all the time. In this way I knitted 11 centimeters.
7) The edge was finished with small cells of 4 air loops, the result was 13 cm.
8) I didn’t have enough thread, so I added another color, and I liked it even better.
9) Handles are also used as decoration.
10) First I knitted a chain 38 cm long, then a row of single crochets. The next chain is woven into the previous one after 10 cm and this is the result.
The size of the string bag is 38 x 35 cm - neither large nor small.
