    Your sources don't say anything about soil compaction, workability, structure, etc. The sources you cited focused primarily on ph, sodium levels, and ion charges. Several of your factoids mentioned sand, not clay. Why would you even use sources saying it isn't helpful to use on sandy soils when all the claims are for clay? I don't know if gypsum is ineffective as a treatment for clay soil compaction and texture, that's why I'm on KZread researching. Based on the sources you cited, you don't know either. What is your motive? Do you sell a similar product that competes with gypsum?

    Great video thanks Matt, where I live gypsum does work very well but I have to apply it in huge quantities every season. Definitely improves the texture of our heavy clay soil. Our local farm supply store was familiar with the local soils, he was surprised our clay had a neutral pH but I do add a lot of compost and arborist mulch to the garden beds. For my MIL’s garden on sand (she lives right by a beach) it would do absolutely nothing. The gypsum seems to “hold” the super fine clay particles into little balls and changed the texture to be “fluffier” sort of like the difference between cornflour, and then when you add a little butter and they clump together in tiny clumps. It doesn’t seem to last though unfortunately. Good explanation for those of us who need it broken down definitely not a one size fits all. Now I know I’ve “re flockulated” my soil and created aggregate.

    I’m going through a lawn renovation and about two inches down the soil is incredibly dense and so compacted that I had trouble using a shovel to dig into the soil. I want to remove about two more inches of that compacted soil so I can add three inches of a blend of top soil, all-purpose sand, steer/ chicken manure, nitrogen fertilizer. I have declared war with the dense soil in my lawn. I WILL HAVE A NEW LUSH GREEN LAWN. I WILL HAVE MY NEW LAWN AT ANY COST.

    Fighting clay, compacted, acidic soil here in the North East. Opened up some walls in my home for a remodel and had abut 20 pieces of sheetrock for the dumpster. Decided to break up a piece, soak it in a bucket, and blend it with a high speed mixer. The result was a super alkaline creamy mixture, like 90 weight gear oil. Thinned it out and sprayed it across a 100sq/ft test plots, estimate 40lbs of sheetrock over the area. That was 5 days ago. The results are amazing, all done with garbage that was slated for the dumpster. You probably can come up with some math or scientific reason this isn't a good idea but that test plot is greener than anything I've seen in my yard in years. Going to keep an eye on it and see if it helped with compaction

    My only concern would be clogging a sprayer but that's it. Dry wall can be either calcium sulfate or even calcium carbonate. If you have acidic soil you could have been calcium deficient, and the response would make sense. If you have acidic soil, assuming your slurry was indeed alkaline (gypsum is not), the response would make sense. So I don't see anything wrong with it at all

    Hi Matt, quick question, here in Houston, we have been getting flooding rains for days, as a result, many lawns look chlorotic including my own. I would assume, since many micros are mobile, that the flooding is washing away the sulphur or iron in the soil. My choice to replace the sulphur is Ammonium Sulphate (21-0-0) but Gypsom (Calcium Sulphate) is a sulphur source as well. What is your recommendation.

  • @TheGrassFactor

    Applying gypsum to an already extremely high calcium soil would not be advised. The flooding is creating anaerobic conditions and limiting the uptake of N. AMS would be the appropriate choice.

    You’re missing a few huge benefits that gypsum has. Its a great way to get calcium and sulfur into your soil which is 2 nutrients that your soil needs alot of. Even if your soil test shows high Cal, its most likely not available. The biggest benefit I see for gypsum is to lower excessive magnesium. The sulfate can bind with the mag to form a salt and from there it can be leached.

  • @TheGrassFactor

    @TheGrassFactor

    3 жыл бұрын

    Most magnesium in the soil exists as magnesium carbonate. SO4 does not react with magnesium carbonate. It would take something like sulfuric acid. Sulfate is not sulfuric acid, or even acidic for that matter.

  • @grassgodlucas7420

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TheGrassFactor The sulfate in gypsum is a double negative charge repelled by the soil. As it moves through the soil, it will take the small mag particles with it - the double plus charged magnesium. Which forms epsom salts and will lead to leaching excess mag. While I totally concur with the majority of your evaluation I just reread Dr Chalker Scott’s assessment of gypsum. As taken from her summary: With the exception of arid and coastal regions (where soil salts are high) and the southeastern United States (where heavy clay soils are common), gypsum amendment is just not necessary in non-agricultural areas.” So there still is a bit of confusion based on the studies you reference and what the evaluation considered. I live in a coastal area with a thick layer of depositional clay. Adding compost creates a humus layer that basically rides on top of the clay layer. There’s no way to break that interface without mechanical means. I have had success using a combination of gypsum and quality compost to soften that clay barrier. It’s not a magic bullet and I realize that there may be issues with leaching iron manganese etc but it’s impossible to change a clay zone of that magnitude. I found zero studies where the study was done on clay soil using a combination of gypsum and compost. So based on my experience I will keep adding gypsum and compost yearly and watch how the soil test goes A report recently received via email: “A study at Penn State also has shown a significant increase in root growth by both tall fescue and bermuda grass when gypsum was applied to a clay soil. As you can see in the picture below the gypsum treated soil had a larger amount of root mass at each depth than the control.”

    ok then ....I've been putting gypsum on top of my clay for a few years now, and it hasn't done a damn thing; now I know why ....but yeah, read in one of your other replies what actually works to soften clay(and keep it that way) is to just get some roots growing thru it....as I did do one season of cheap *Annual* rye grass, and it totally 'woke' the soil up; as otherwise no matter what I did, as soon as that clay turned to slick mud, it all froze back up into a hard cracked solid dead block

    @@TheGrassFactor yup, I certainly did notice that ....the annual-rye really did nearly completely wipe out anything else that had been growing there .... but actually in my case that was a good thing as I was wanting to switch grass types in that area anyway, so I didn’t have to glyphosate at all - however I did notice the first reseeding attempt(after the a-rye, which I verticutted/tilled out late summer/fall)mostly completely failed, but then in the spring and by a year later a better over seed again at fall did work great so again ‘now I know why’ - super thanks! I’m currently doing a 20’X50’ “sports court” which I put annual ryegrass seed in last fall after tiling, but it seems only half of it came up last year, and now the rest grew this spring .... my plan was to keep blasting that area with repeated a-rye and tilings as I do sessions of leveling for a few years(when I used it before, it actually looked pretty good, was durable, and very easy to quickly patch any damage; so my ‘court’ would still be playable during this process) BUT if this a-rye is as deadly as you say, how badly will I “taint” that soil I’m trying to build from ever switching up to a better permanent grass type? and what could be done to “clean” the soil or how long does that poisoning last?
