Stonewall Attack - Beginner Breakdown
Mike Kummer looks at scholastic player Grayson Marks's games. Grayson has been playing the Stonewall Attack with white. The Stonewall is a white (mostly Pawn) formation. It can be played regardless of most of black's responses.

FINALLY, ANOTHER VID FROM MIKE KUMMER 1998 MISSOURI CHAMPION
This instruction was fully understandable. Thanks heaps.
I've been experimenting with the Stonewall attack for a couple of months now, and when you say that 'No matter what black plays you can still play the Stonewall', I would dispute that! If black plays 2...Bf5, or if he fianchettos his king bishop, the Stonewall setup becomes an inappropriate opening. You nearly always have to go into Queens gambit declined setup.

Yes, that is the "Anti-Stonewall" defence. White cannot play the stonewall. But it is considered bad for black because white can play an early Qb3 and target the weakend black b7 pawn

@@stevenodonoghue6856 Early Qb3? In which line? Black will not rush with Bf5 or Bg4 and white will be at disadvantage.

It's really good against beginners
I love this guy!
22:19 im new at chess, but if white plays pawn takes bishop at d6,,,, black cant take the bishop at b7 yet, he will lose the queen,,, black must response taking the pawn at d6, then white bishop can go all way back,,,, that make sense?

+zoiuduu ye i had the same idea - i think the ending position is the same except maybe the black rook on A8 could go somewhere else
@22:36 you take the bishop first and then capture the pawn on b7
Damn, Kummer is looking HAWT!

Why show us the example of these games with the same mistake ? How does that show what to do when you play it right

I wouldn't have checked with the Queen early in the match. I would've brought the Rook out instead.
So , what i take from this 36 min video , is that i shouldn't make obviously dumb moves. Thanks a lot.

+Mark Callaghan What I take from your comment is that you're willing to watch the breakdown of a child's rapid chess games for 36 minutes when it's obviously not what you're looking for.
After the "mistake" of white playing e4 after which black can take the "free" pawn on f4, white plays e5 and have good compensation, I'd say white is still better
That feeling when the little kids in the audience are probably a little better at chess than you are

White is a pawn down, must defend against several threats, and has half his pieces paralyzed in the nice little corner he's made. The game is over.

Good way to defend against stonewall?

I use the Stonewall in speed chess because it's simple. And, if my opponent allows me to control the center, I can usually pull off a victory with relative ease. However, the Stonewall gets dominated against stronger opponents who block the center. Yup! It's just that simple. So, my only counter is sacrificing a Knight just to maintain control of the center. Being a piece down, my opponent will usually trade pieces, taking matters into the End Game. The Stonewall is effective against beginner players but seldom wins against stronger players.

@@madpoet2911 what? IMs and GMs play the stonewall all time time. Even capablanca has played it. It definitely doesn't get destroyed by strong players

there were better moves other than his first check on his first game, i would have probably moved his castle up and from there taken the game, that first check was a bad mistake and en passant is usually asked whether or not you both wish to play it; you cant just bring it in willy nilly unless you're playing professional.

En passant is not an optional choice that anyone has you agree to... Its just a rule of chess. If youre playing without it the game is fundamentally different, youre not playing chess anymore
