'Stolen' Charles Darwin notebooks left on library floor in pink gift bag - BBC News

Two "stolen" notebooks written by Charles Darwin have been mysteriously returned to Cambridge University, 22 years after they were last seen.
The small leather-bound books are worth many millions of pounds and include the scientist's "tree of life" sketch.
"There have been tears," said the university's librarian Dr Jessica Gardner.
"I was heartbroken to learn of their loss and my joy at their return is immense."

They wrote "Happy Easter," so it was most likely a Christian that stole them as they consider Darwin their enemy. This is just more religious people committing crimes in the name of their god(s). I guess we are lucky the library wasn't burned down or blown up. Even today, saying what Darwin said in a number of countries would get you executed by the religious.

No witchhunt? These were not loaned from the library. These were stolen. If you steal a Rembrandt painting and keep it for 20 years and return it, there is still a crime committed,. 20 years these could not be studied. They are also invaluable to science as well as history. It is also most likely an act of religious extremism. The person wrote "Happy Easter" and they stole the notebooks of Darwin the enemy of the religious. The man whose theories proved humans were not created but evolved. So no when you steal something worth millions and keep it for 20 years of course you should face punishment. Preferably jail which hI hope will put off other religious nutcases from attacking science.

It was probably just a simple oversight. The fact that the University did not follow this up when they went missing needs to be looked at also.

The thief kept it for own enjoyment just like most art collectors. The thief is probably dying so he/she decided to return it.

Maybe the person who 'borrowed' them has died, but left instructions that the book's be returned? Does'nt really matter now they are back.

No, the most important is that the one who have returned them had courage to do so and if he/she doesn't want to disclose is the right to be respected.

Just because you return something doesn't mean the crime is forgotten. They deprived the country and science of important works for 20 years that are worth millions. They should still face prison.
