I definitely don’t agree with Stoicisms ethics but one particular part of them is really interesting to me. The part that says you shouldn’t be mad at bad things that happen to you, such as the death of a loved one. Part of me says that’s true, you shouldn’t get sad as achieving happiness is the goal of life. The other half of me is saying if you don’t experience the depths of despair you’ll never be able to appreciate the heights of happiness. I don’t really know what to think about this.
@brutusthebear9050
2 жыл бұрын
I think of it this way. Value is what brings human flourishing, eudaimonia. Short term happiness is not the goal, eudaimonia is. So you must act to gain and keep things in order to reach eudaimonia. If you lose that thing, the pain you feel *should* be proportional to the value lost. Mourning is good. By the way, mourning is good from a psychological perspective as well. Hence why it is good morally. You only hurt yourself by distancing yourself from desire. The stoic philosophy is one of death and nihilism, just as Kant's philosophy was later.
@calbor2561
2 жыл бұрын
@@brutusthebear9050 I think you’re right, I mentioned that if you where never sad then you would never be able to appreciate being happy but you also mentioned that if you don’t mourn you’re distancing yourself from desire and happiness by not appreciating things that give you value which I hadn’t thought of.

The stoics never said you should sever yourself from emotions.but despairing over death won't raise anyone back to life.
Gotta love that RimWorld soundtrack
I would not say that Stoics don't care of anything or are apathetic in our sense of word. I would say they reject self-pity and related emotions. After all: "Accept the things to which fate binds you, and love the people with whom fate brings you together,but do so with all your heart.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations “Perfection of character is this: to live each day as if it were your last, without frenzy, without apathy, without pretence.” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations “When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love ...” ― Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

The best part of stoicism is overcoming dark moments and not caring for what other people think of you. Seneca has some good quotes abour stoicism.

Rimworld OST starts playing *philosophical confusion*
Stoicism has some wisdom and truth in it, but it's extreme form and it's oft-attempted universal application just don't work. The idea that torture or starvation are the victims fault for being miserable over is just a base denial of the true animal of man. I mean two of Stoicisms most prominent followers in Rome, Cicero and Cato the Younger after their daughter and brother died respectfully; abandoned all their ideas of frugality and stoicism to engage in heartfelt and lavish funeral celebrations. Man can learn to be happier through stoicism, but stoicism was not a cure all. It never was.

Love this thing of philosophy videos
you are fantastic
I tend to pretend that some ideas are characters, this helps me better come to grips with them. With stoicism, I imagine them to be not human, but something other above human, or that of a cliff-faced soldier. What I mean by those two, is while I admire the stoic, I do believe that they are a little too apathetic and duty-bound for my tastes.
Great content! I gotta ask, are you influenced/inspired by Leonard Peikoff's History of Philosophy? I ask 'cause you're one of the very few people who did not make a joke out of Objectivism, and the thing you said about later philosophers not having the problems that Stoics did (in terms of lip service to personal happiness) reminded me of one of his comments.
6:29 DoggoEzekiel
Why just lay back and take it, well as it was put so long ago. Suppose you're a dog that is attached to a moving cart with a leash, you can't influence it's direction, all you can do is walk around with your leash to it. Either you move with the cart, or you sit down and get dragged to it's destination regardless.

Brah i am a Turkish person myself and i quite like the ideas and character of Diogenes but not gonna lie seeing him represented with Turkish flag was kinda cursed
It is rather primitive and self-contradictory school of thought. I find it most of Greek philosophy to be at the level of a village wise man. It does not tackle problems directly and is detached from human reality. They introduce apathy and indifference to what happens to an individual. However, they then contradict themselves by clinging to duty and virtue. If they would not care for what happens to them, they would not strive to struggle for the betterment of others and themselves. In their worldview, they can't justify duty and apathy at the same time. You cannot have your cake and eat it too. The only logical conclusion is a philosophy of a dog. Btw: I also get a lot of Buddhism vibes from Stoicism.

The Stoics believed that to achieve a life well lived, we should live according to nature, or better defined, our nature as a part of this universe, our nature as a human being, and the individual nature defined in us by our genetics and circumstance. Our distinct nature as humans compel us to be social, compassionate and virtuous, to use reason, as well as give us desires and aversions towards certain objects left over from evolution. However, those instinctual urges often contradict with those more advanced capacities, and for us to maintain our nature as humans, we must pay attention to both. It is not that the Stoics did not care for anything, or in a sense, exhibit the common definition of apathy, but instead that they do not care for what is not in their control for it would be unreasonable and only lead to suffering when in the end they have no influence on it. They can not control the outcome of events. However, they can control their ideals, judgements, and their will leading up to their action that will eventually affect the outcome, and it is there where the ideas of duty and virtue can be expressed. After the action has been executed, they know what comes after is not up to them.

Is Diogenes represented by the flag of Turkey because he was born in Sinope ? The concept of a Turk is a relatively modern idea that Diogenes would likely be cynical of... he also died in Corinth, which is still very 'Greek' also a concept he would be cynical of... likewise it wasn't like 'Greece' was a thing back then, just a bunch of city-states with a shared language, just a little weird anachronism you got going there, with your countryballs.
Why it is so difficult to accept that things just happen?
What was the relation between ancient philosophies and ancient religions. I am mostly thinking of the greko-roman world. I know Plato inspired a bit Christianity later and in the middle ages philosophy was done in the context of religion. So was there an interaction between the two in the Classical period? Did the teachings of philosophers shape the way everyday people were worshiping? Or the other way around?
