Love watching when a pond build starts getting to the point that it's really alive, and stocking fish always seems to be the point where that really happens. Good luck and hope the heron doesn't eat them all...though if it tries maybe it'll get too fat to make a fast getaway

You mentioned a blue heron, these things ruined the bluegill, redeye and bass in a creek near me. The meat of the fish are peppered with yellow worms (parasites) that are disgusting when you cut one out and it moves on the knife blade! As i understand it they mostly come from the mouth of blue herons. Great looking pond btw!

Pro tip when buying your bass, wait all the till the very end of the season before you buy them. The hatchery always unloads them right before the winter season. You get some really great deals that way. You want F1's and northern, if you can get them, they make a hybrid that is the absolute best!

Response to post about what Mr. Beally Good job is: My first post here, i felt you had enough bosses to drive one from the cliffside already. I noticed you were far too tech savy to be less than what you are, i figured the subject of career would come up just as it did. Your other house blew my mind, especially the stonework inside the log walls (most impressive). You nailed my prime interest when you waiffed into the extensive audio gear/both setups. It's been my passion for the past 50 years, I've got two setups as well. I'm not your typical audiophile at all, I specialize in surround as opposed to stereo, figure it as part & parcel Pink Floyd's fault entirely after I personally attended at 18 years old the Dark Side Of The Moon surround sound tour circa first week of June, 1973. I purchased the whole extensively complete quadrophonic ball of wax in the next 18 months including two Floyd's in stunning SQ surround. Thanx for sharing, knew you could never be a bumble with a wife that smart. We love your posts.

Fun stuff. Costly but worth it in the grand scheme of things. Great start to the food web there. Ya know that big snapper would actually cook up pretty good if you are worried about what he will do to the little fish. One of my high school buddies had me over for dinner and his mom had done one that size. Turtle stew was not bad. That was over fifty years ago yet still have the memory.

No-o-o-o! Don’t kill the snapper! She (guessing) has a slow metabolism and won’t eat enough fish to matter. Herons are another story, cormorants are worse, and if you get a family of otters in there, I don’t know what you could do about it (legally). Don’t sweat the poor ol’ snapper. She’s the least of your worries as far as predators go.

Depth would depend on climate and fish species. If you are in the north and the water freezes in the winter ,you want it deep enough to give the fish water to survive in. The father north you go ,the deeper the water you need . Bass ,blue gills ect are warm water fish where as trout are cold water fish. They need deep cool\cold water to survive. Herons and turtles have to eat too . Herons are fun to watch. I was at a friends house on a river that had an island . We were sitting out and saw a heron trying to catch a fish along the bank of the island. There were several crows screaming and seem to be harassing the heron. They landed on some low branches and continued screaming. The heron jabbed it's head in the water and came up with a huge bass empaled on his beak. The heron flicked its head on the bass landed on the shore . Dinner served for the crows. They attacked the bass and the heron went back to looking for it's much smaller dinner . My friend saw it happen again after that time

Heck yeah!! Gotta start somewhere!! She was impressed with the pond and such a great baseline opportunity!! Well done Geoff! That’s all your planning!! Awesome. We shall see how they grow. I am subs right to BamaBass of course and he has had some great growth rates, but he is in a different climate than you are. It’s all interesting stuff! You are doing well and I suspect we will see similar results here in less the air and water is colder, then the growth rate could slow down!! Our trout are growing fast! They are hybrids “designed” to do so though. They actually have some salmon strain in them. We have them up to 18 inches and they will be 20” or slightly more this fall. We will stock a few more then. We overstocked initially last year and until the pond grew by accident, they were overcrowded and stunted. Those springs are still flowing hard!! We have a constant and sizeable creek going out the other side no matter what. about the depth yours can get over the drain. Approximately 5” of water constantly. Fish and wildlife are saying I’m fortunate the springs are natural and not deliberately targeted,,, whew!! Haha.

@@BealyGood - no, not the heat. Last year some started developing heat blisters in the trophy lake nearby. They still fought but didn’t always survive after releasing them. I stopped fishing for them. They had what we call a summer kill. Lost maybe 10% they figured. They prefer cold waters. The springs we have are just cool enough at about 70 degrees at the highest and the pond didn’t exceed 23 C or about 75 F. Chilly swims, but acceptable here. The lake nearby exceeded 80 degrees F. It was really warm and the leech population exploded. You couldn’t even swim in there. Leeches are gross when they get ya!! They are harmless, but creepy!! Hahaha!! I wish our fishery was more like yours!! Orrr,,, Manitoba!! You can catch anything freshwater there!! It seems, heh heh. Take care Geoff!

I told Chris what the state recommended as far as the depth of water to the pond size and what happens when you have a shallow pond weeds take over and you can have fish kills because of a lack of oxygen, and you only need 2/3 grass carp per acre, as you know even the backs have a required slope to them
