Stock L98 Corvette takes on SCCA track night

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Decided to take the Corvette out to its first track day with a good friend of mine who brought his 2016 Mx-5. His car has a few bolt ons and a tune was very fun to play around with it on track. My car held up great and im very impressed with the performance so far considering its age. 1990 base with z51 performance package, Zf6 transmission,Nitto nt05 tires

I started off driving as a teenager in a the newer 96 Cutlass which is no comparison but had Corvette inspired suspension and let's just say I was younger dumber and a lot more brace back then... Now at 33 I hope I can actually help myself get into harnessing the power of the car a little more.

If you haven't upgraded your brake pads, may I suggest Stop Tech, they have several pads, if you plan to do a lot of track days than plan to change brakes before events as the track pads don't get hot enough on the street. The stainless-steel brake lines make a big difference. You can help with temps by switching out the stock radiator for a Dewitt's dual row aluminum radiator, it helps a lot. My Z51, 6sp has the oil cooler option and the radiator is built to add effectiveness in this aspect. If you haven't autocrossed the car you should, you will find the car perfectly suited to autocross. Nice video.

Thanks for the input I really appreciate it man, I’ll look into the stop techs I’m running some rock auto pads and although they never faded they did smell really bad so I kept pulling into the pits to check them. I’ve heard these calipers also like to spread apart over time so I may look into other options but I’m impressed by how it stopped from 110 mph. Yeah as far as temps I also have a z51 I’ve looked under there and saw a big cooler which looks to be for the p/s I think the engine oil cooler is just coolant that flows through the oil filter housing not like an actual external one so I may upgrade to one of those. I may look into that and I can see how the torque would suite autocross.

@@morecars324 The Corvette can always stand a radiator upgrade. On the brake front, the pad and braided steel brake lines are a significant affordable upgrade. Well Wilwood makes a great upgrade package for the vette the calipers which were produced by Brembo are in my opinion excellent. They work great for track days and autocross. now if your going to race the car ala SCCA then a brake system change becomes practical as your going to want to be able to move balance as well as some performance gains but otherwise my opinion is that well maintained stock set up is fine. My car was prepared by Dick Gulstrand and ran with the Gulstrand club in SCCA Cal Club and San Diego region both with it's prior owner (3 championships) and with me (1 championship) If the car came with the oil cooler option you will see two lines running from the oil filter location to the radiator. The upgrade of the radiator to a dual core aluminum will do you as much or more good than a separate oil cooler which is a lot more complex because of the way the C4 is set up that it sounds. Having moved from So. Cal to Texas I appreciate cooling. If you haven't autocrossed it's a blast, and if it comes to your neighborhood and the car is running good look for the SCCA Pro Solo, that is a real hoot.

I had the old one out and a new one in, in less than an hour. Easiest one I have ever changed. A few weeks later I had a stalling issue. Nothing more than an ignition control module. Over the year of ownership I replaced the adjustable shocks that had worn out, did all 6 U joints, tune up, fluid changes ect. Everything done in my driveway. And I am not a professional mechanic. A easy upgrade to C4 braking is front C5 rotors and Calipers with a Doug Rippie Brake Bias Spring in the master cylinder to put more braking to the rear to compensate for the increase on the front. I did this on my 93 with Baer two piece rotors and the results are wonderful.

I have a 1988 manual coupe, so I was very interested to see how your car performed because track days are in my car's future, as well. Thanks very much. I understand why you haven't got an aggressive front-end alignment -- street handling is compromised, and tires are not cheap -- but 1-2 degrees of negative camber could significantly reduce the understeer you are experiencing on the track, and C4 front camber is set with easily accessible shims. By removing shims totaling equal thickness from each side, you can quickly increase negative camber for a track day, then put them back afterward. 230F of water temperature is actually within the C4's acceptable range. With the factory 17-lb pressure cap, the coolant won't boil until it hits 260F, and normal operating temp for these cars is around 205F. Your oil temp of ~250F was well below the point (400F) where good motor oils start breaking down. Obviously, you wouldn't want to flirt with the upper limits on a regular basis, but C4s do run relatively hot. The noisy power steering pump _was_ a good enough reason to cool the car down, of course. A return-line cooler can solve that problem.

Thanks for checking out my video Mike, always appreciate feedback from other c4 owners. You will like your car a lot for track driving, the c4 definitely gives you a confidence behind the wheel when you start pushing it harder. As far as my setup I’ve tweaked it since this track day, I actually did a track day/time attack this past weekend and everything held up great. I’m now running 1.4 degrees up front and 1.5 in the back, that’s the best I could get it with the factory setup with Pugh sacrificing caster. I did notice a big difference as I could turn in harder and even put the car into a small drift if I desired. After doing the alignment I wouldn’t not to have to change it, the passenger side sucked to get to the shims so I’m going to leave this setup for street/track use. The power steering didn’t give me issues this past weekend for whatever reason and it was 85+ degrees and sunny, there was another guy out there same car but non Z51 his p/s was boiling over so my stock cooler seems to be holding me over for now.

The setup is fine I drove 2.5 hours each way to the track for the first time on the alignment, tracked nice on the highway. Figured tire wear is not much of a concern since I’m hard track driving anyways, but worse case I rotate tires on wheels from left to right in 5-7k miles
