Stirling Engine Powered Canoe
Ғылым және технология
Julian Wood's self-built triple transferator hot-air engine powers his canoe at Thames Traditional Boat Rally. 18th July 2009. Henley on Thames. Transferator engine is made from stainless steel food storage jars. Heat is supplied to engine from propane gas burner located below the hot-caps.
One of two Stirling and hot-air engine powered boats taking part at the 32nd Thames Traditional Boat Rally, 2009.

This is delightfully, wonderfully, beautifully ridiculous and awesome at the same time. Hats off, Mr Wood!
Great to see a video of a stirling engine actually put to use! Very good!
I just love this proof of a solar powered boat with no solar panel and electronics. Thumbs up!
I do not care what some of the others think. This is simply cool. Makes me want to check out more sterling engines.
Fantastic! It's an inspiration to see such experiments taking place as well as looking like a lot of fun.
Perfect application. The temperature differential ,is the ticket! Neat job.
I have just seen a boat powered by sitting in cool water on a warm day. This is awesome.
And thats the last we saw of the great old tinkerer... he motored away into the future.
This is for the man who has plenty of time to get there!

Im really glad someone went to the effort of building that.Even tho it only serves to show why we dont use stirlings in cars and boats. But a lovely sterling engine that would be a fantastic conversation piece mounted.I would be proud to show it off if I could build that. Not many real engineers left now!
Gotta love a crazy old bastard like that. Next up, hit & miss roller skates!!

monkfry "hit and miss". i just got that, very good. Maybe a pulse jet on a bike.
And so began the search that resulted in the Golden Age of Sail.
Love this! I can only HOPE to be as awesome as this guy when I am his age!
it the guy from back to the future at it again.
some say hes still canoeing to this day
That looks too cool! I hope I'm doing fun things like that when I get on in years.
I like the way the boat was used in this fashion... pretty cool I have to say
the engine is doing some work, you can see the turbulence from under the boat. give the guy some credit. this was a cool idea
I love this! Much more impressive than a luxury yacht
Water skiing no longer a dream with an engine . Who knows what the future holds for motor powerd craft.
You're the man! That gives water cooling a whole new meaning :)
@2:03 you could see the wind pushing it backwards! Full respect to Bob power.
Using Stirling Motors on a boat is actually the most brilliant Idea, since you are pretty much surrounded by cooling water! The boat only lacks a lot of more gas burners! ;)
I'd like to add a few comments to this video:Okay, yes, it is a low power engine - agreed. But it has just started up, so has only just enough heat built up on the hot side to be able to run. It gets faster.Julian is a very experienced engine builder and has probably built more engines than any other person. When I use the term "build", I don't mean it in the car engine "build" way, which I would describe more as "assembly", putting together parts built by someone else, but instead making all the components from scratch.Note: this engine has also been run on a charcoal fire for its heat.Julian has since built other stirling engines to power a larger boat, and continues to innovate and design.Keep up the good work! Who cares about shorts, sandals and socks? One day the fashion police on this site that are lucky enough to live long enough will realise that it really doesn't matter. 😉

Okay, now that you've lectured us all, put me in touch with Julian. I need a chainsaw engine "built" for under ten grand in labor costs. I'll bet the old gent will tell you that I can buy the whole freaking saw for a tenth of what he'd have to charge to really "build" an engine.
I know that a lot of people are making fun of the lack of speed, but this is one of the few videos that I have seen on KZread that actually demonstrates a Stirling performing work in a useful manner. It isn't a speed merchant, but it is demonstrating work being performed. One of the only other examples I can think of would be the very large 5 hp unit that I believe was from one of the Koreas? I believe it was used as a water pump? Anyway, nice demonstration.
I like how it almost stopped even after dude kicked it off. Motor going the whole time.
Interesting concept! Fruitless results!
THAT IS AWSOME! Keep up the good work mate!
Exciting footage, the damn thing got going faster than I thought it would though, and was cool tech.
Performing work. Very nice!
Wonderful!! That engine is truly amazing! I have often wondered how a low torque engine like the Stirling could be used..
I like the old school implications here
Clever idea! Ya need to show us the gear/prop drive setup that's hooked up to your engine!
I hope you have lots of fun with your engines.
This is really cool! Like It!! Nice work!!
It's a proof-of-concept thing. It's actually very impressive.
Quick Marty, start the stirling engine, we have to get back to the future!
Great hobby gramps ! thumbs up !
finally someone put the stirling engine to use!
Love Stirling engines they are so versatile in that you can use any heat source ie any fuel to power it including solar so you are not limited to one fuel. The more we invest in these machines the more power we can harness from them.
He had the idea and saw it through . It works and it's cool !
Great job. Really well done.……!!!!
To anyone who owns a Ford Focus, this is a very powerful engine, probably more reliable too.
very-very cool, back to the future!! awesome!!!
Looks like he is in for a fun time.
I am not sure of the benefits of this type of engine, but it was definitely very smooth and quiet. The engine operation seemed precise.

Nice!!! Free power right there.
trust the old men to come up with these ideas... epic though
Man! THAT thing FLIES!!!
Great job
this is perfect for fishing trips...you know without scaring the fishes away
In the video description it says the engine heat is supplied by a propane burner "Heat is supplied to engine from propane gas burner located below the hot-caps."
Love the seat belt it works great for when the canoe rolls over it keeps you under water

Those are just lines to the rudder for steering.
that pretty amazing considering its free energy. and i have only seen like 5 Stirling engines doing work and most of them were water pumps. So yeah this engine is really neat.
should be titled "stirling powered canoe set adrift after guy pushes it and engine cannot propel canoe"

That is a nice pace to be sure
The engine emulates Ronald Fishers "flatulence converter" or "fartatron".A machine that converted forced bowel gas into combustive force via a tube of reinforced rubber feeding into a trumpcarb device that enabled combustion and motion via a steel cam rod.For more information ,read Nurse Geraldene Tittertons book "Floating along on gas"Published by Ladybirds books.
By the time he's back from that trip, he will be ready for that nursing home.
I love it. Plan to make my my own; yes I do.
Can anyone imagine a person watching this video and thinking the canoe has no steering?
Der verrückte Professor hatte wieder mal eine Wahnsinnsidee.....lol
thats very awesome i salute you sir!
The problem with 1 mph boats is they may encounter 1.5 mph current.
Great work congratulations
It won't win any speed records, but this is quite the feat of engineering.
Good effort !!!
I've got to say, there's a bit of brilliance to the thought of using water in a lake for the cool side of the engine. Maybe to increase the hot side, they could use a light weight solar collector - reflective Mylar and/or a Fresnel lens would be very low cost and likely effective, though they would have to be moved constantly to face the sun.
yes the best is a great cool stirling boot
Paddle boat to the rescue Skipper Man the Ore!
She blinded me with science!
The speed is incredible!!! xD But lovely concept!
hey Doc....thats a new model of DeLorean DMC....good work
Acctualy scientists just made free energy for the first time using permanent magnets :D
Modern atomic submarines also use stirling engines to generate power:) Very clean and clever in underwater conditions with limited access to the oxygen.
Good job.
This is so cool
Don't blink your eye. He rockets away fast and you may miss it. lol Actually it's a step in the right direction. GOOD JOB!
Fan-tas-tic !!! Great job, ol'sport.
Holy shit, did you see the energy of that "Foot kick"!! we should invest more into that!
The S engine is an intriguing alternative. Advantages are (potential) high efficiency, safety, quiet, high rel, low maint., low emissions; also can use many fuels, even corrosive ones. Disads: low power (so far) for size and cost. One can be built from simple items with little machining, as shown here, made from some kind of cans. S engines typically have to warm up before start/full power. I don't think this guy was trying to win any race, just a demo of a working homebuilt, very cool!
I was blown away, just like this canoe that isn't doing anything. Lol
It's a good thing the guy gave him a push start. I hope he has a paddle so he can get back to the dock.
that is so cool!
KZread is filled with the most idiotic, insulting, most hate filled people I have ever seen.. Just went over my engine videos to see nothing but horrible comments and dislikes.. This boat and engine is absolutely amazing.. Proof of concept. Thank you for taking the time to post this as it was enjoyed.. 5000 times more than the 477 losers could do. EFF U Dislikers.

It's kinda underwhelming. He received a bigger boost from the man shoving him off than he did from the engine. Stirling's aren't exactly known for horsepower.

outstanding !
the speed was amazing
GREAT SCOTT
You are geniouse! but in 19th century :)
Put a Hobie mirage peddle system in this... and go twice as fast!!! Human power!
When that canoe reaches 88 mph it does absolutely nothing
Do you even know what you just created? That could change the world
@lisikunique Heat is supplied to engine from propane gas burner located below the hot-caps.
