Stirling Engine Powered Canoe

Ғылым және технология

Julian Wood's self-built triple transferator hot-air engine powers his canoe at Thames Traditional Boat Rally. 18th July 2009. Henley on Thames. Transferator engine is made from stainless steel food storage jars. Heat is supplied to engine from propane gas burner located below the hot-caps.
One of two Stirling and hot-air engine powered boats taking part at the 32nd Thames Traditional Boat Rally, 2009.

I'd like to add a few comments to this video:Okay, yes, it is a low power engine - agreed. But it has just started up, so has only just enough heat built up on the hot side to be able to run. It gets faster.Julian is a very experienced engine builder and has probably built more engines than any other person. When I use the term "build", I don't mean it in the car engine "build" way, which I would describe more as "assembly", putting together parts built by someone else, but instead making all the components from scratch.Note: this engine has also been run on a charcoal fire for its heat.Julian has since built other stirling engines to power a larger boat, and continues to innovate and design.Keep up the good work! Who cares about shorts, sandals and socks? One day the fashion police on this site that are lucky enough to live long enough will realise that it really doesn't matter. 😉

Okay, now that you've lectured us all, put me in touch with Julian. I need a chainsaw engine "built" for under ten grand in labor costs. I'll bet the old gent will tell you that I can buy the whole freaking saw for a tenth of what he'd have to charge to really "build" an engine.

I know that a lot of people are making fun of the lack of speed, but this is one of the few videos that I have seen on KZread that actually demonstrates a Stirling performing work in a useful manner. It isn't a speed merchant, but it is demonstrating work being performed. One of the only other examples I can think of would be the very large 5 hp unit that I believe was from one of the Koreas? I believe it was used as a water pump? Anyway, nice demonstration.

The engine emulates Ronald Fishers "flatulence converter" or "fartatron".A machine that converted forced bowel gas into combustive force via a tube of reinforced rubber feeding into a trumpcarb device that enabled combustion and motion via a steel cam rod.For more information ,read Nurse Geraldene Tittertons book "Floating along on gas"Published by Ladybirds books.

I've got to say, there's a bit of brilliance to the thought of using water in a lake for the cool side of the engine. Maybe to increase the hot side, they could use a light weight solar collector - reflective Mylar and/or a Fresnel lens would be very low cost and likely effective, though they would have to be moved constantly to face the sun.

The S engine is an intriguing alternative. Advantages are (potential) high efficiency, safety, quiet, high rel, low maint., low emissions; also can use many fuels, even corrosive ones. Disads: low power (so far) for size and cost. One can be built from simple items with little machining, as shown here, made from some kind of cans. S engines typically have to warm up before start/full power. I don't think this guy was trying to win any race, just a demo of a working homebuilt, very cool!
