I think that this song, "Thousand Years" and "Desert rose" could become a trilogy of stories about a man who is trying to escape from reality, dreaming of exotic countries and missing someone he has lost. A painful longing for love and beauty is combined with the image of the desert, reminiscent of a lonely human soul, ancient legends and ethnic motifs. I really adore this songs.

A stone's throw from Jerusalem I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight And though a million stars were shining My heart was lost on a distant planet That whirls around the April moon Whirling in an arc of sadness I'm lost without you, I'm lost without you Though all my kingdoms turn to sand and fall into the sea I'm mad about you, I'm mad about you And from the dark secluded valleys I heard the ancient songs of sadness But every step I thought of you Every footstep only you Every star a grain of sand The leavings of a dried up ocean Tell me, how much longer, How much longer? They say a city in the desert lies The vanity of an ancient king But the city lies in broken pieces Where the wind howls and the vultures sing These are the works of man This is the sum of our ambition It would make a prison of my life If you became another's wife With every prison blown to dust My enemies walk free I'm mad about you, I'm mad about you And I have never in my life Felt more alone than I do now Although I claim dominions over all I see It means nothing to me There are no victories In all our histories Without love A stone's throw from Jerusalem I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight And though a million stars were shining My heart was lost on a distant planet That whirls around the April moon Whirling in an arc of sadness I'm lost without you, I'm lost without you And though you hold the keys to ruin of everything I see With every prison blown to dust my enemies walk free Though all my kingdoms turn to sand and fall into the sea I'm mad about you, I'm mad about you

Sting on “Mad About You”: It’s inspired by the story of King David and Bathsheba. These stories of murder and obsessive, jealous love appeal to me for some reason. Yes, those lines “There are no victories / In all our histories / Without love” have the quintessential Sting idea that romantic love outweighs global issues. I really believe that. Love is continuity of the species, it’s the most important thing. That’s why love songs are immortal. A political song will be dated within a year. It took me a long time to learn that." Glory to God.

Me too i was almost 18, when this album came out. Always been a Sting fan. Listened all songs of "soul cages" so many times, but some songs are slow and boring, ie. island of souls, wild sea, angels fall. Jeremiah Blues kinda out of place here it sounds like it belongs to the Dream of the BT more than to this album

@@provatos yes, these 3 'slow' songs make the album a synthesis, after all Soul Cages is a concept album. But compared with the previous 2 solo albums of Sting, Soul Cages has 5 strong songs, and 4 weak songs (fillers). While 'Nothing Like the Sun' has all good and energic songs, 11 tracks (1 is a cover of Hendrix little wing)

"Though all my kingdoms turn to sand And fall into the sea I'm mad about you I'm mad about you But every step I thought of you Every footstep only you And every star a grain of sand Although I claim dominions over all I see It means nothing to me And fall into the sea I'm mad about you. The line is a bit too cliche and rosy to be poetry exactly, and it is simply incorrect and even naive. Perhaps Sting should read some actual history, for he'd find it to be rather more complex, and far less pretty at that. that being said however, I suppose the line works for the song. Which is indeed a pretty song.

This song depicts the biblical story of King David and Batsheba (2 Samuel 11, 12; 1 Kings 1, 2). Bathsheba was the wife of Uriah the Hittite (an elite soldier in the army of David). A beautiful woman, she became pregnant after David saw her bathing on a rooftop and had her brought to him. David then ordered that Uriah be moved to the front-line of a battle, where he was killed. David married the widowed Bathsheba, but their first child died as punishment from God for David’s adultery and murder of Uriah. David repented of his sins, and Bathsheba later gave birth to Solomon. The story of David and Bathsheba reminds us of how great men who are called by God are still humans and struggle with sin. This is David's great internal conflict, he is sexually and romantically infatuated with Batsheba and yet frustrated at his sinful feelings and longings. David is at the same time both in love with, as well as angry at, Batsheba. This conflict is encapsulated in the homonymous name of the song, "Mad About You", a double entendre, which can be both construed as being very enthusiastically fond of, or angry at, someone.

To me thuogh the song makes me think of a woman I knew who served her European governent by marrying into a Lebanese tribe in the Eighties. A stones throw from Jerusalem, during the civil war of the Levant. She was a woman of mystery, a female James Bond, whose history I still resarch, and I have mourned her passing some five years now.

Mad about You - lyrics ❀ ( • Sting ) : A stone's throw from Jerusalem, I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight. And though a million stars were shining, My heart was lost on a distant planet That whirls around the April moon, Whirling in an arc of sadness. I'm lost without you. I'm lost without you. Though all my kingdoms turn to sand And fall into the sea, I'm mad about you. I'm mad about you. And from the dark secluded valleys I heard the ancient songs of sadness. But every step I thought of you, Every footstep only you, And every star, a grain of sand, The leavings of a dried up ocean. Tell me how much longer? How much longer? They say a city in the desert lies - The vanity of an ancient king. But the city lies in broken pieces Where the wind howls and the vultures sing. These are the works of man, This is the sum of our ambition. It would make a prison of my life, If you became another's wife. With every prison blown to dust My enemies walk free. I'm mad about you. I'm mad about you. And I have never in my life Felt more alone than I do now. Although I claim dominions over all I see, It means nothing to me. There are no victories In all our histories Without love. A stone's throw from Jerusalem, I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight. And though a million stars were shining, My heart was lost on a distant planet That whirls around the April moon, Whirling in an arc of sadness. I'm lost without you. I'm lost without you. And though you hold the keys to ruin Of everything I see, With every prison blown to dust My enemies walk free. Though all my kingdoms turn to sand And fall into the sea, I'm mad about you. MAD ABOUT YOU (русский перевод) - my favorite singer!

What a beautifully-arranged and haunting song about the magnificent pain of love. Sting at his best.
To me, this is the best love song of all time. I love Sting and his deep, dark, descriptive lyrics. He paints pictures with his words.
Such a beautiful song. I don't know how someone writes music but I'm sure grateful to those who can. A wonderful artist.
The Soul Cages is an amazing album, which kept me company in a very challenging period of my life. I was 17 when it was released, and very confused, and one of the (few) anchors of my life was music like this. Thank you

❤❤❤❤❤Well Jodorowsky has a phrase that I love and that I apply on many occasions: "Madness is what heals." It is not about illness but rather there are people or situations that open up a new nature in us, something beautiful and vivid that breaks any possibility of limits.

Masterpiece! Sting needs a special award, Grammy is not enough.

MAD ABOUT YOU (русский перевод) - my favorite singer!
