Stimming reviews the NI Maschine+ (Electronic Beats TV)

Telekom Electronic Beats TV’s synth expert Stimming checks out Maschine+, Native Instruments’ new groove-box which takes the original Maschine workflow, but packages it into a new standalone format, which can also be used in controller mode with a computer. It includes NI plug-ins and effects like FM8, Monark, Massive, Raum, Phasis along with many more, and also features its very own sequencing capabilities. Powered by a quad core CPU and 4 GB of RAM, it also has a pro grade 24 bit audio interface, and built in Wi-Fi. Stimming gives us the heads up on this exciting new piece of gear.

Thanks so much for the great review Martin! Audio hiccups are of course a big no-go and this was a beta version of the software. Stability is our top priority for the update that will be available on the October 1st release date. Really nice to see you having so much fun with morphing and macros. You can in fact set macros per sound, per group, and also on the master, which would give you what you're looking for. Regarding performance, while starting one instance of Monark shows a 20% usage of the CPU, that does not mean that opening four instances of Monark would take up 80% CPU. The CPU usage will only go up a few percent if you use the same instrument. Thanks for the great feedback and suggestions, we're happy you're excited for Maschine+!

@Stimming I appreciate your effort to be totally transparant and sincere about your opinions and thoughts regarding this product, great job! Being a Maschine user for over 5 years I'm definitely interested in this concept of a stand alone Maschine but it has some hurdles to overcome as far as I can tell looking at the dislays & software interfacing, incorporating outboard gear and also pitching / time stretching quality (all of these points you mentioned as well). Anyway great review Stimming and great concept so far NI, keep pushing forward! Regarding the last point, with creating better presets and moving them from the PC for example: they could fix this but creating some sort of sync function, that would sync samples, presets, projects etc via native access (it already does that with the products you own, would be great if it would do that also with the user library). Then you could just edit a preset on the laptop, press sync, and bling, it would show up on the M+

Thanks Martin for the very good MASCH+ review. :-) As always very refreshing your North-German-English. I am afraid mine sounds the same :-) I am using an MK3 and MPC live?! it would be fun to do a direct comparison MASCH+ VS MPC LIVE. I love my MACHINE MK3 ( in combi with JAM) .... BUT: I think MASCH+ is a little lonely without the full power of the mighty Komplete/nks world. When I close my notebook and put the MK 3 machine on top, the package is not smaller either and I have everything I need on board. All packages all plug-ins working. THE BIG POINT: What happens to the CPU / RAM performance of MASCH+ when a lot of plugins/effects/tracks/samples are running. I don't trust that more complex projects are possible with the MASCH+ hardware. But I would be happy if I am wrong. Do not care much about touch screens and be dependent on a battery. .....Let me say it this way: Unfortunately i have to take my AKAI MPC LIVE to jam on traveling or outdoor..., even if I find the Mpc S/P/T workflow unbearable. But maybe in a few years (lets hope not) when MASCH+ has grown ..... Maybe .... Let's hope for the next few years that NI will find back to a good balanced way: "The right development for music and artists" OR "The maximum for shareholders and profit"…The good reputation of gone days does NOT last forever.

Minute 35: Clips. He's using the beta version of the hardware which still doesn't have the final clips feature (that's why he couldn't figure it out). That will come out now in october. It allows to convert patterns to clips, which won't be locked to the sections and can be moved freely across the arrangement.

You can manually modulate/record automation of the Sample start position, but you can't use an LFO or ENV to modulate it.

Nice and little bit ironic review by my Lieblingsreviewer/Artist Stimming. The Product didn't got me but the way he entertained me is always a pleasure to watch. What is the mystery about that latter box left begind him. Another review there was written something with dr.dru i think.

Thanks for the review! One thing you can't do from the MK3 (you have to do it on the computer) is map an external USB midi controller to a knob control - can you do this on the Maschine Plus? That also avoids the problem of your onscreen macros disappearing when you change context (group etc).

@martin, tnx! Easily best music-tech reviewer on YT! NI: are you listening to this guy? He gives some amazing feedback! @Martin: one question: is it possible to automate/record parameter changes in song mode, so over the duration of an entire song?

what about latency Stimming ?, will it crumble when loaded, its already breaking up on so little? how much could it handle? what about the over-all sound quality of conversion? what else from NI could be loaded into it ? can i use Reaktor, VST's ? what are the limits to that? ..Id like to know the difference in power , as the standalone feature is convenient and cool but at what cost to my Maschine now ?

With the USB A ports on the back, could I have a usb hub into one of them, with multiple synths via usb to the hub? & would I get audio and midi, so I could play my synth lines via the pads and make use of the scale and chords mode. I have zero keyboard skills but have synth (ju06a, tb3, and am getting dreadbox hades soon) Would a usb hub in one of the maschine usb ports work or would audio need to be from an external mixer or interface?
