At STIHL we have a wide range of anvil pruning shears and bypass pruning shears. But first, it is good to understand the difference between the two and what they’re best used for.
In an anvil pruning shear, the cutting blade makes direct contact with the wider counter blade. The wide counter blade is called the "anvil". These types of shears are best suited to cutting straight, dead and hard wood.
With a bypass shear, the blade and anvil pass flush against each other during cutting. This gives a clean flat cut without crushing the material, helping avoid damage to the plant or tree and prevent infections or diseases. This is why the bypass cut is better suited to live and green cuttings.
In the STIHL range of bypass shears, we have the STIHL PB 10, PB 11, PB 20 and PB 30. The PB 10 and 11 bypass shears are suited for green fresh cuts up to 35mm, while the PB 20 and PB 30 shears can cut through 42 and 50mm thick cuttings. As you move through the range they become more robust, longer and a little heavier. All STIHL pruning shears have damping on the joints for a smooth cut and holding grooves on the anvil to secure the material.
We have two models in our anvil shear range. The PB 25 is suited to branches up to 40mm and the STIHL PB 35 anvil shears are suited to branches up to 48mm. Both sets of shears are 80cm long and have a leverage system that helps optimise the force you put into the cut. The STIHL PB 35 has a more robust build and a branch hook built in too.
