STIHL'S MISUNDERSTOOD NEW CHAINSAW! Stihl MS 162 REVIEW AND TESTS!

Ғылым және технология

This video is one of if not the first end-user reviews of the all-new Stihl MS 162 chainsaw. This saw will replace the MS 170 and it has more models in the series which will replace most of the smaller chainsaws in the Stihl lineup. I bought this saw because it was on sale at the Stihl dealer for $179.99. It is a great little unit.

The 170 is not too different. It is just what you see from the outside. It is that way so that you can see all of your gas and oil. The 170's oil and gas were only visible through a little window.

Great review. The only thing I don’t like is the weight difference. You’d think 1lb doesn’t make a difference but it does when using a saw all day. The nice thing is they are cheap to buy when on sale and I think if you mixed this saw at 40:1 vs recommended 50:1 it would last a very long time even cutting lots of firewood. I had a 170 years back and Stihl laugh at how much wood I cut with that thing and when I sold it the piston looked like new and it ran great. Always used 40:1 non ethanol 91 octane fuel in it so I’m sure the MS162 will be just fine. One other thing is I think they should have called it the MS172 seems mightier than 162 and has a ring to it. Lol

@@OliverDiGeronimo009 Ya I’d love to do some long term testing with their oil that they claim you can run 80:1. I used to be an Amsoil dealer years ago then I tried their engine flush and my truck developed a tick immediately after and I knew people using their engine oil and they had failures just like any other oil did so I figured and still do that their oil products were/are hyped up so I quit selling it. I have heard good things about their 2 stroke oil and like I say would love to do a long term test to see how it does.

So the dealer tried to sell me a 5/32 file for this saw. I have been using it all day for 2 days and the 5/32 file didn't seem to be big enough so I went and got a 7/32nd now it acts like it's sharpening correctly. Which is the right size ?

It looks ok for the price. It's not a professional saw and should not be compared to one. For a novice homeowner it probably feels mighty. I don't think it will last long bucking firewood but cutting down a couple of trees each year probably works fine.

That’s the beauty of KZread. You can leave a comment like your an expert about something you know nothing about. Nobody was comparing it to a “professional saw” as you call them. But the MS 170 will do 1000’s of times more than you just stated. Can’t speak for the MS162 as I don’t have one. But I bought 50 acres of wooded land in Northern Maine and have spent the last 5 summers cutting thousands of trees down the cutting them up to burn in brush piles. I first bought one of your “ professional saws when I first started. A MS362. Too damn heavy for somebody doing what I was doing. The very next day I bought my first MS170. Hardly ever used the other one again then sold it because I didn’t and took a big hit. All of the “lumberjacks” just kill me. I doubt they cut half the wood that they pretend to.

The 162 is much slower than the 170 and nearly weighs two pounds more. In fact the 162 is only a half pound lighter then a 50cc MS 261 professional saw. Stihl has went backwards with these new entry level saws imo. In fact when my 180 quits running I think I'm going to get a Holtzforma MS 180 clone as opposed to buying the new 162, 172 or 182.

@@OliverDiGeronimo009. If you think one bar nut is good enough that's all that matters. Stihl thinks the same thing. :) I'm more comfortable with two bar nuts for safety reasons. Regardless of that, these new entry level saws are much slower and heavier compared with the prior generation (170,180). I see it as a step backwards for Stihl. Thanks for the video. Take care.

@@whatnot987. For the last 5 summers I’ve been clearing wooded land in Northern Maine. I’m on my 3rd MS170. Don’t take that as these saws don’t last. It’s unbelievable how long these saws last. 1000’s of trees from 4”-12”. Then delimbing them and chop them up for burn piles. If they are going to do away with the 170, I’m going to get one while I still can. The 162 does have some things I like, but the 170’s have proven themselves to me. The heavier weight is a turn off for me. God thought I needed 2 nuts, I think my chainsaw does too!
