STIHL MSA 220 Battery Powered Chainsaw

Ойын-сауық

In this video I take a first look at the New Stihl MSA 220c battery powered chainsaw from Stihl.
I fell a 12” diameter ash tree to put the saw through its paces and the saw performed beautifully.
It really is cool how far these battery machines have come, in such a short space of time.
I will be making more videos featuring this saw, so keep your eyes peeled for future videos.

I have a STIHL MSA 200, I bought it for my lawn care business. Honestly it’s one of the best saws I have ever used or owned. I was skeptical at first since all most of my past saws where gas, but this saw has really gone above and beyond what I expected from it.

There is a fundamental misunderstanding of how this battery system works displayed here. The saw will cut with an identical chain speed regardless of the battery being used. Stihl has designed their tools to perform at 100% while the battery has enough voltage to sustain it. Generally, the cut off is 28v. When the battery being used is reduced to this level, the tool will shut down automatically. Having said all that, the difference you will see during usage will be this: Using the 300 battery will give you the shortest run time. Using the 300s battery will give you a slightly longer run time. Using the 3000 battery backpack will give you the longest by far run time. Not to address the power cord if using the backpack battery or the battery belt (that uses 300 and 300s battery packs). The cord can carry more current than the tool can draw, so it is never the limiting factor. That factor interestingly enough is in each battery itself. There is a current limiter that prevents the tool from drawing too much power, and possibly damaging the cells. I have both systems and they perform equally well, with the only difference being run time. Certain tools will require the power cord connection as the tool has no battery socket, so you will need the battery backpack or belt to use them.

Im not so convinced for the need to have big saws any more. The chains on the smaller 12 and 16 inch saws are thinner so they cut without so much resistance. I guess if your cutting a 24in dia then ok use a bigger saw but only because of the bar size not the power.
