I am very pleased with my 261c. I bought it 3 years ago, cut and bucked 30+ full cords of firewood and at still runs awesome. Last fall I got it pinched in a 20 inch diameter tree just as it was falling. I stepped away as the tree was going over, the saw fell out and the butt landed on it. Saw was still running but unusable with a broken wrap handle. Local Stihl dealer had a me a new handle in 3 days after I ordered it, and after about a 30 minute job to put it on (never changed one before) it looks and runs like new. Very pleased with the saw and dealer.

I've run many saws with M-Tronic and one of my personal saws has it. Here's the deal: if you are a "chainsaw guy" this will not be the Stihl for you. But you already know that. This is great technology for a wide ranging fleet of trucks whose operators dont understand why a saw that ran beautifully last week in Chickasaw won't do anything but spit and sputter and stutter before dying down in Bay City. They're going to get pissed off and most dont know how to tune one (but they'll try anyway). Now you've got 12 saws going to a Stihl service shop because of elevation drop. That's who this saw tech is for and it is a perfect saw for the job.

The automotive industry has proven for decades that electronic engine controls can be reliable, efficient, and give good performance. Funny how so many people think that as soon as you put anything electronic on a machine that a failure is just around the corner. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, though. As for me I'll continue to enjoy the performance of my MS362CM.

@@dkdanis1340 And how exactly do you know this? How do you KNOW this M-tronic system will last as long as an old school carbie and frequent manual tuning? Using a chainsaw is an EXTREMELY violent (vibrato) event. Every component of that saw will be shaken, and exercised vibrationally; I just don’t see how this Frikkan M-tronic can be durable for years and years of heavy duty use, when it is an electronical solution to a mechanical and fluid dynamic system. I guess we’ll see in a few more years when shit starts acting up the madness of diagnosing which component got tired of the continual vibratos, and gave up. I have a feeling that the M-tronic replacement parts are going to be expensive...Of course this will occur outside of the Stihl warranty, and you might just buy another new saw at that point. It’s the maddening “throw away” society in which we live. Profit at ANY cost. Quality and longevity be damned.

What means a great deal to me would be the warrantee on a saw like this, electronic part have a history of not always working as they were designed to work. Is the saw waranteed long enough to cover problems that might develope later on in the life of the saw. If the saw is as good as advertised then the company should be willing to stand behind the design improvements for the life of the saw.

Modern automobile electronics are incredibly reliable. Handheld power equipment has to deal with weight vs performance. Electronics absolutely add more bulk, this is not a good thing. The EPA gestapo are destroying everything with a internal combustion engine. It isn't about air anymore it's about controlling your life the way they see fit. If you voted the Leftist Marxist ticket you get what you deserve.

Tim Frost: The reputation of STIHL is that it is VERY DIFFICULT to get that company to cover almost any warranty work. Not very long ago, in Stihl's advertising, they said they were addressing stalling & flooding problems in certain models that they named. I thought this was unusually good of them; and they said they would continue down the line to improve the remaining models. I have always had problems with Stihl saws flooding. So this was good news. It is also why I have owned Husqvarna & Jonsered saws, and some others as well. Last week a good man that has a construction KZread channel, demonstrated turning a large Stihl saw on its' right side to deal with flooding. That was news to me. I will probably have to try it. While we are talking about saws, there are several KZread videos on chainsaw sharpening. Some of them are incredibly poor. However, after more than 20 years of collecting sharpening devices, there is one to recommend. It is the little, inexpensive, 6 sided thing sold by Husqvarna and Jonsered. I have used it on 3/8 chain very happily, and there is one for low profile 3/8 as well. And I used it on my Farmhand 029 Stihl with very happy results in USA West Coast pine. I think it is worth a try. Remember to clean your file. NO sharpening device will overcome a poorly maintained file. I replied to much more than you spoke about. I hope to be of help to chainsaw users. Remember to read your saw's handbook. It is there to help you.

@@stihlusa Many thanks, the customer service support team never has the ability to answer my questions. I am waiting for a return call. The thing is, this information should be published, and put out there for reference. either hard copy, internet, or both. Also, those who own equipment should be notified when changes of that magnitude are introduced. Additionally, if a part isn't available any longer, all additional parts required to fulfill the needs of the upgrade should be free or at minimal cost to accommodate the machines needs. One shouldn't be forced to buy a new coil just because Stihl screwed up with the Fuel solenoid. Hell, the updated solenoid and control module should be given to customers with the original versions of the machines, accompanied by a letter of apology for the inconvenience, and a check to cover our labor, or free labor from a Stihl mechanic. Your customers shouldn't have to pay for anything that Stihl messed up, ever. So start sending some letters, with information about what is going on. BTW, The solenoid failure caused severe scoring of the piston and cylinder due to the lean-burn condition it was experiencing due to solenoid failure WHAT WILL STIHL DO TO CORRECT THAT PROBLEM ? *(The fuel solenoid was designed to fail between 100 and 200 hours of operation, REAL NICE).* the heat probably ruined the plastic bearing cages. If nothing else, at least let us know what we need to do to fix the problem by providing the part numbers, info, and why. This extends to more than the 362, and the Stihl team know it. Can you say class action suit ?

Couple things - yes, EPA is driving. Comment on the carbs in cars then and now, the first *UGLY* feedback systems in 1981, then MPI, then TPI, and now Direct Injection. I believe over time this will be a good thing. Reliability is a concern for any new introduction but it isn't like the mid-80s when computer technology in engines was new. This is commonplace now. Also, hardware has gotten consistently better in terms of computers/microchips that can withstand harsh conditions. I for one think it is a good thing and believe that over time will overcome issues if there are growing pains. We don't try to buy the best if we arent serious about quality equipment and I don't think Stihl will let us down. Also remember, Briggs and every other equpment manufacturer will need to do this to comply with standards. One other comment - concur with person who stated previous models were better performers than current - I have noticed this also. I think the switch to electronics will correct that as manufacturers have struggled to create carburetors to achieve EPA controls, and the net result was consistent drops in performance - maybe not noticable from one year to next, but over time the changes add up.

Same thing was said about electronics on vehicles and not being reliable. Electronic cars are far more reliable and a hell of lot less maintenance than carburetors and points vehicles. Electronic engine controls are very reliable and require a lot less attention than manual carb saws, plus more power and burn less fuel. The downside is the $1,000 MGD scan tool if something does go wrong, with the electronics that does require a scan tool, and you don’t want to take to the dealer. I was an 80’s kid and remember the early computer control systems on vehicles. I get the hesitation with the saws and I was skeptical at first after reading about the 201 problems. The early M-Tronic versions needed some updates but the 3.0 is problem free as far as design goes and the failure rate is extremely low. If there’s a problem with the saw it’s likely going to be mechanical.

Hello Thomas, Ignition modules often last the life of the engine, but in some cases can fail sooner. This can be caused by the heat soak or electronic components that give out typically causing a no spark condition when the engines warmed up. We do not have any common issues with them and usually can be replaced up to 2 years under warranty. If you'd like for us to look into this with you please send us a direct message on Facebook since we cant get them on KZread. The mtronic adjusts the carb dude.. both the solenoid and the processor are easy changed IF faulty. The fuel consumption isnt the only selling point. As you know, a engines performance is controlled by fuel air mixture. In old carbs this was done manually and by ear. If you live somewhwre like i do, it can be 88 and sunny one day and 30 raining ice the next. And everything in between . The mtronic is a gamechanger here.. 3 years daily use and ive had no trouble at all with my 661cm.. actually the exact opposite.. that dude is always tuned just right no matter the enviroment.. i understand the skiddish mentality behind new stuff.. but this really isnt new technology. Its just new for chainsaws.. and it works.. huskys autotune does the same thing. And its good at what it does too... Ive had more trouble with regular saws than the mtronic.. and thats the truth.. not sure who told you that you needed a laptop to diagnose it... If you work on the fuel system or air system of the saw, you have to reset the processor.. you dont plug a laptop too it.. all you do is run it in the cold start position for 90 seconds. Cut it off and the whole system is reset. Dont be afraid of innovation brother.. you might actually like it.. you can google search autotune and mtronic. And youll see issues with it.. but all in all were talking 20 people posting online.. you can find equal numbers of bad reports on anything manufactured... Search mtronic problems, see how many different people complain... Lets go overboard and say 50 people.. thats a big imaginary number but for the sake of argument lets use it.. 50 people vs the THOUSANDS of mtronic saws sold.. thats a small percentage.. take into account that most these were resolved with a trip to the dealer and its negligable. 1000s of saws sold, happy saw users dont complain on the internet.. they use their stuff happily. thats why you only see negative remarks.. the happy people , ( vast majority of owners) are slinging saw dust.. if you want to stay old school, i respect that..but dont bad mouth good stuff because you dont get it.

I suppose the fuel injection system is made in China just like the current non adjustable Zama (which Stihl now owns) carburetors. I believe the current ignition systems are made in Italy. It will be interesting to see if they continue to make them in Italy. So much for the Stihl products being made in the USA. They are assembled in the USA with at least two sub-systems being made outside the USA. The Bosch plugs are no longer made in Germany. It would be nice to know exactly what percentage of a given product is made in the USA. I am glad they are assembled in the USA. It would be much better if they were 100% made in the USA!
