Hey everyone I just wanted to do an update on this video. After using this setup for a while, modifying the stihl sharpener worked great for the first several times but the more i used it the more i noticed it was filing the depth gauges incorrectly and causing it to cut incorrectly. A viewer turned me on to the PFERD Brand who makes the sharpeners for stihl, and they have the correct size for the Echo CS-590. I will try to post a New video updating this info Soon. Here is a link For the PFERD that is the correct size for the Echo CS-590. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046VN5Z6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=williamsonrid-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0046VN5Z6&linkId=533cff172d874b6f7427b771b578a1d3

17303 or 17304? I keep reading people using one then the other?

From what I’ve read the 17304, 7/32nds is the recommended for the echo chain size and the 13/64ths is a stihl recommended size for the 3/8ths pitch chains. I think a lot of it is personal preference as most people say the 17303 or 13/64ths has more grab to it,

The pferd 7/32 is for.404 pitch the echo 590 stock chain has 3/8 pitch pferd doesn't make a 7/32 with 3/8 pitch they do make it in 13/64 with 3/8 pitch the difference in file size is less then 1/64 of an inch .The correct size pferd 2n1 sharpner for the echo 590 is 13/64 with the 3/8 pitch spacing.(keeping the 3/8 pitch is more important for setting the raker height then the 1/64 of an inch you lose with the file)

So the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener I bought with my new saw has the 3/8 13/64 file in it and the hand file the dealership gave me was the 7/32 file. Which will sharpen my chain better. I can fit the 7/32 into my Stihl sharpener but will it cut the rakers the correct height or would I be better off to go with the Pferd brand? I'd appreciate your help cause I'm a newbie

I have ome of them and it uses a 7/32 file. I like sharpening it the old school way and using the husky depth gauge. You can get it sharper than with that stihl toy

Glad ya made it work for. It is easier to buy the correct one, You can find them under the name PFERD which is the company that actually makes them, I know Sherrill Tree carries them.

I’ve read a lot of different opinions about this, and have found that it seems some of it is personal preference, as the 5.2mm is 13/64, my local dealer said it would work fine. If you change your files just make sure to get them centered perfectly, if one is off even just a little it can make your depth gauges file incorrectly.

My local Echo/stihl dealer told me either would work fine some folks prefer the 13/64 because it cuts the tooth a little deeper therefor making it a little more aggressive.

Is the rakers supposed to be filled to a depth of .025 or .030? That's a question I've had trouble finding the answer too

  • @WilliamsonRidge

    @WilliamsonRidge

    Жыл бұрын

Echo spec is .025 but it really comes down to preference when you go to .030 it makes the chain a bit more aggressive, for me it doesn’t make a big enough difference to really matter, if I was a professional arborist I may have a different opinion about it or be a little more picky.

I actually ordered 3 of them to take care of all my saws. They are chain specific for a reason and If you drill them out the depth gauge/rakers will be off and you will end up cutting your teeth down to quickly. Buy the PFERD brand, cheaper and they make them for Stihl. FWIW

Brad Metcalf yeah your right, it wasn’t taking the depth gauges down correctly it worked great the first few times but the more I used it the more you notice it’s not correct, thanks for the info I’m going to do a follow up video about it and show the PFerd one that is correct.

Great Video! Have the Echo CS-590 too. Would it be possible to post links to which model of the Stihl 2-in-1 Easy you bought for the CS-590? They have two different models. One is the 3/8", the other is the 3/8'P (pico). Also, if you have links to the correct round file you bought...would very much appreciate that information as well. Thanks again for the video and information!

Thanks! I actually have been planning on updating this video because after using the modified stihl sharpener it was filing the depth gauges incorrectly. Here is a link to the correct sharpener made by PFERD who makes them for stihl. They actually have the correct size so no modifications needed, works great, puts a consistent edge on everytime. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0046VN5Z6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=williamsonrid-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B0046VN5Z6&linkId=533cff172d874b6f7427b771b578a1d3

@@WilliamsonRidge Have another question. These are the specs of the chain for our Echo CS-590: 3/8" pitch, 1.3mm (.050) gauge chain, 7/32” (5.5mm) (round file), .025” (0.65mm) depth gauge distance. Everything seems to match with the Pferd you linked to, except the depth gauge distance. The CS-590 chains depth gauge distance should be .025", but on the Pferd it's .030". Is there a Pferd that is within spec on all, including the .025" depth gauge distance (or is the .030" close enough to .025" to work)? Thank you for replying back with the link about the Pferd.

  • @WilliamsonRidge

As far as I know they don’t do one that is .025”. But it does seem to work well on mine it has just a bit more aggressive bite but not enough to bog the saw to much I use mine on the 20” bar and 24” bar and the saw handles even the 24 with no problems. It would be nice to find one exactly the same specs but that one is the closest I have found. The only way to get the specs just right may be using a standard file and a depth gauge that is the .025” but I’m not real good doing it the old fashioned way, so I tend to always use the 2 in 1.

@@WilliamsonRidge Thank you for the info. Wasn't sure if the .005" would make that much difference either. Will buy the one you linked to since it's working for you and they don't offer a .025". I have a 20 inch bar on mine and a lot of dull chains that have been piling up. Looking forward to sharpening them and getting a lot more brush clearing and tree falling done. Thanks again. I subscribed to your channel too!

@@WilliamsonRidge This Pferd 13/64" has the .025" depth gauge, but 13/64" is a little under 7/32". Probably better to go with the .030 depth gauge and 7/32" file as you recommend (or another option is to change out the 13/64" file with the 7/32" file using your drill method, then you'd have the .025" depth gauge per spec.): www.amazon.com/Pferd-Chain-Sharp-Filing-Guide/dp/B003M4JLE2/ref=pd_cp_86_3?pd_rd_w=2s3mz&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=ZTMVS80XQPA2WD9RYJP7&pd_rd_r=efce9b1a-7532-11e9-a30c-45137eaa8a8d&pd_rd_wg=ONQy5&pd_rd_i=B003M4JLE2&refRID=ZTMVS80XQPA2WD9RYJP7&th=1

I gotta say. The pferd 7/32 isn’t good. I used it a lot. It ruined 2 of my chains. Cut cooked. So I went back too my pferd and stihl 13/64 & it’s better. It fixed the problem and it makes my chain sharper than the 7/32. I know Echo and other brands recommend the 7/32 but the 13/64 is actually better and it works. It makes the chain look and feels like a new chain. & Btw I have a Echo 590 also and it works. Now I stick with the Pferd, Stihl 13/64, 5.2mm
