    When I was 16 yrs old in high school I wanted to build a fireplace grate in shop class,but it involved welding and before I spoke up for myself another student volunteered to weld my project for me and I let them,here it is 40 yrs later and I realize how simple it could have been for me to weld my own project. I could have built some nice things out of metal if I wasn't so afraid of welding back then.

    28:25 one trick my friend thought me was to slip the rod over the edge of that plate so you have the flux touch it and you pull back and over. That motion is enough to strike arc super easy and is my go to. The rods flux will be rubbing the plate and you just pull.

    You helped my stick welding watching this, I still struggle with starting the Arc. I am using a HF Vulcan 220, wth HF sticks. Would getting better sticks make a deference? I will keep practicing, cause I have to use stick on a grinder build for my channel. I am using a truck rotor for the base, I will preheat, and let it heat slowly, so it doesn't crack. Luckily, I can MIG the rest of it.

    just as a question to the "welders" out there... I'm just beginning and have run a half pound of sticks so far. I've been striking off at a low angle (essentially using the flux as a buffer from sticking) and immediately angling up into my drag/flow angle. Is this wrong? I seem to be laying nice lines down, but wondered if starting so low was deleterious to the beginning of the weld puddle.

    When you say “push” are you meaning pressing down? So forward back pause push (press down) applying more downward pressure??????

  • @MyUnquenchableThirst

    @MyUnquenchableThirst

    3 жыл бұрын

    Another way of saying pushing is feeding. You do not want to decrease the arc length. It's not literally pushing the rod to the plate you don't want to make contact. You're just feeding the rod into the puddle

    What would be the main reasons to use the three different techniques,and not use one is there advantages to using 1 of those techniques of the 3 instead of the others?

  • @jakewastaken

    @jakewastaken

    2 жыл бұрын

    My understanding is that you would use the first technique to lay down “root” to start with, and then the second technique for a “hot pass,” and then the third technique as a “fill” and as a “cap” for finishing. The root would be straight down the middle of whatever you’re welding, the hot pass is right over it, but getting a little more coverage above and below with the motion you’re doing, and then the fills are like a little above and below that. The cap I think is kind of a final pass making sure that the uppermost portion is as secure as possible with no gaps or thinness up top. I think the general idea is that you’re mixing all of these to make stuff as secure and even as possible. If you just used one technique or one pass, you risk failure of the weld over time and stress. That’s what I’ve gathered so far, but don’t take my word as gospel. I’ve only watched a few videos on this.
