    @@robhogan9279 Yeah but Stew's been doing it most of his career, he's pretty good at it now, and his audience expects and understands it. That little "but Stew...." voice used to be Richard Herring. I think it comes from when they lived together for years. They both slowly developed that voice as a character, Rich uses it too in a different way. It's nice to have been a fan since they at least first got on TV, I've got DVDs of gigs, videos and podcasts, but never been to see either of them live.

    @@greenaum I was actually quoting Stewart (he talks about Brechtian alienation in Comedy Vehicle, S4E1). And it is a shame to have to break character and explain that. But hopefully it will save you a long, tedious exchange of emails. (Just a joke, like on Top Gear!) Anyway you're right, I think he's successfully refined his audience to the point where most now do appreciate it, even if he'd never admit it in character. I've not seen quite as much of his stuff with Herring but I'm sure you're right about that "voice" being his as a legacy of those days - it does even sound like an impression of a 90's Herring.

    I would really appreciate it if you could explain the reference. I have been a Stew fan for years, but every now and again, one of his more intellectual references will go straight over my head. Usually, it's a reference to something in politics from before I was born. I hate being exactly the kind of person Stew's talking about when he says a routine is "not for you"!!! Help an ignorant, come-in-error fan out!

  • @PhatInAHat

    @PhatInAHat

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@KaryoSentiko it's not an "intellectual reference" - at the start of the show he asks the audience to give suggestions for a random country which people generally don't know too much about, and one of the suggestions was Costa Rica and he said he'd use that one and it would come up later in the show. The routine itself is him making random nonsense up and pretending that it's a display of stereotypical Costa Rican culture, when actually it's not and really he and the general public have no idea what is. It's a riff on a few things: firstly how nationalism often ends up as mere performative displays of low resolution cliches and basic cultural stereotypes; secondly it highlights how ignorant the public often are of many places around the world and how easy it is to fall into xenophobia and mockery of other cultures' traditions; and third it shows that even a foreigner's basic knowledge of another country's stereotypes doesn't necessarily mean that the foreigner actually has any significant or real understanding of that other country and its way of life..

  • @greenaum

    @greenaum

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yep! He does it a lot, and it's a character Rich used to play a lot, now Stew just has to raise his pitch and strain his voice a bit. I think they developed the character between them when they lived together and would be humourous amidst the poverty of beginning a comedy career. They even mentioned it on, I think, the last episode of TWMRNJ. They did a swap of roles over Stew's rubbish jumper, Rich said something like "Now I am the high-status character" and started abusing Stew in exactly the same way. It's a character who's not as smart as Stew and doesn't always have correct and logically valid opinions like Stew does. Now I think he attributes the character more to being the British public, the average man. Or rather the average man the media portray, in real life the public aren't nearly as thick and ignorant as the media think they are. Either The Sun trying to convince working-class people to evolve into Morlocks and live in the sewers, or the BBC like Christian missionaries on some cannibal island, trying to save the souls of the poor savages, by getting them to eat low-fat margarine instead of human flesh. Either way, it's supposed to be terrible, but Stew only calls on that character, like he's moving his hand and pretending it's talking, for short bits, just to incorrectly counterpoint some point he's trying to make. In that way it also represents the audience. Really I suppose it represents everyone in the world who isn't Stew.

    There is not one moment in this that wouldn’t make it funnier if Richard Herring suddenly came on and said “Wait wait wait, what’s all this I’ve found here about you hiding your finances and killing a baby duck here Stu?”

    That's bootlegs for you, recorded from a seat onto someone's phone, if you're lucky they'll wear a proper mic they smuggled in, otherwise you're lucky if they point the phone's mic in the right direction. You're not getting the benefit of Stew's mic going directly into a mixing panel with a couple of mics on the audience to mix in the laughter at a level where you can still hear Stew perfectly.

    Is his haranguing the audience about 7:00 in genuine? Cos I know it's something he's done before, and he's said (I've read a couple of his books, the annotated standup routines where the annotations are longer than the act and what you buy the book for) that these routines are written down exactly and performed the same every night. But then I also half-remember bits where he genuinely brought the audience round with a bit of genuine explanation, trying to make a heartfelt connection, and employing his lecturing and disdainful Stewart Lee character who coincidentally is exactly like Stewart Lee the real person in every way. So anyway was it for real or did he just put it in because it was going to be 3 episodes worth of stuff and he wanted to get everyone on board from the start? Nobody reading this is going to know the answer, are they, except Stew himself, so I love your work Stew if you're there. Otherwise I suppose we could all have a little chat about it.

    Yes he has many variations upon this - Content Provider - his zenith in my opinion, is replete with audience haranguing.

    Do you think that any of the people listening to this have the capability to go back in time and buy tickets for this show so they can hear it at the source? If not, then his livelihood won't be affected by this being here. If anything, it's likely to make him sell more tickets for his tour. Do some thinking John!
