    I have yet to own a relic guitar, and I have by no means done a lot of research on the practice, but I thoroughly enjoyed your videos on this project. I’m no expert on what the best methods are. You’re a very talented artist and I think you have great imagination in your work.

    Such an amazing job man. I liked everything, but what really transcended the end result is the pickups, pickgourd, knobs job. it's a killer. LOVE IT!

    Ok so the the pickup mod worked great. I replaced the ceramic bar magnets and poles from these cheap overseas pickups with Alnico 5 magnets and they sound really good. I'm very impressed. That high-gain rhythm riff at the beginning of he demo, same guitar. The neck has a flat radius like a modern guitar. I didn't like it at first. I wanted a more vintage radius but the flat board is growing on me. It's a light Strat due to the mahogany. Most Strats are pretty heavy. I'm having running stability issues because of the reliced string trees. I could install graphtec string tress and have zero issue but then the overlook would be disrupted. Having to tune after use the tremolo bar is the price to pay for looking cool.

    I did a similar project a few years ago. I put butchers wax over the original finish on the areas I wanted exposed. After painting it blue, the next step was to lift the blue paint with a credit card. The butchers wax lifted off.

    One thing that can be said in defense of relicing is that many modern violins, when they are made our antiqued. It’s not exactly the same thing. It’s more of a finish thing, rather than a beating up the wood kind of thing… But I think it’s a way to sort of get the instrument certain vibe and mellowing out the look so it doesn’t look so new and so bright. In a way so you can concentrate more on the music.

    I used graphite lubricant powder: amzn.to/4774Q5g it's dark and once applied it is really difficult come out cause the particles are so fine. I applied it right over the nitro. Rubbed it in and feathered it out to taste. I used alcohol to feather and acetone to remove the graphite when necessary.

    Me neither. I love my guitars looking beautiful. I understand if I’m the one that has aged the instrument through years and years of play. Why pay for a nice looking guitar if you’re just going to ruin it. Also, I guarantee nobody could ever tell the difference in sound given a blind test.

    A good relic guitar can best be compared to a well-broken in baseball glove. It is supposed to look and feel as if it were played for thousands of hours absorbing all the subtle nuances that an instrument takes on in that time.

    did the relicing cause and issues with the tuners? Are they still turning smoothly?

  • @MarkGutierrez

    @MarkGutierrez

    the body and neck were mahogany. lots of open grain. without grain filling the paint would just sink into the open pores and wouldn't give you a level finish.

    Why did you put epoxy on the bare wood? I would think you stain it first. I relic-ed a $100 Squier that was brand new. Someone upgraded the pickups and electronics, but I didn't like the shiny sunburst. I did every kind of technique I could find - sanding, keys, rocks, tools, razors, cigarette burns, nitro cracks, finger wear, belt wear, dents, dings, aging all the metal and the end result is something you'd find in a back room swamp bar in South from the 1950's - and it sounds killer. I want to learn more about technique, and wish you would have showed more of the headstock cutting gluing (which turned out great!). I wish I videoed my project.....
