    The title track explores the story of "an old man at the end of his life who is waiting to die. He thinks back to a time in his childhood when he was incredibly close to his older sister. She was everything to him, and he was everything to her. Unfortunately, she died when they were both very young." The man becomes convinced that a raven, who visits the man's garden, is something of "a symbol or a manifestation of his sister. The thing is, his sister would sing to him whenever he was afraid or insecure, and it was a calming influence on him. In his ignorance, he decides that if he can get the raven to sing to him, it will be the final proof that this is, in fact, his sister who has come back to take him with her to the next life."[

    Indeed he is a genius... but a genius who made a very weird mistake: In the beginning everybody can clearly hear that Wilson sings: "You can come with WE... you can live with WE." But 'WE' should have been 'ME', like everybody clearly can hear at the ends of the first two lines.

    i feel sadness for people who don't really enjoy music in the emotional sense. i'm not criticizing anybody, we are all wired differently. but i would hate life if i only looked for a beat you can dance to in the music i listen to. it just has a huge impact on so many people. it's an amazing art form, if you think about how it works.

  • @PiivotP

    @PiivotP

    8 жыл бұрын

    +baconrocks 1 I think it's a really narrow way to only look for emotional impact in music. Making people dance is an entire different part of the artform and don't forget that happiness is also an emotion. Not everything has to make you want to crawl into a corner and die, and if everything did then it wouldn't be fun anymore.

  • @thomasambrozy4568

    +PiivotP I don't think baconrocks 1 has a "narrow way" of looking at things at all. Did you MISS this part? "i'm not criticizing anybody, we are all wired differently." A statement like that is typically only made by nonjudgmental people with open hearts and minds. Do you presume to know this individual personally?

    Listening to music can transcend any particular intent (or lack of) meant or implied by it's author. This is why some of our friends or relatives often will NOT feel or think the same about a particular song as we do. Just ask 20 different people what their favorite rock song is and you're likely to get at least 15 different answers. Why is this? Obviously because people tend to interpret or 'feel' music differently. I could sum up what I'm saying by borrowing a few words from the Moody Blues, "Cold hearted orb that rules the night, remove the colours from out sight. Red is grey, and yellow, white, but we decide which is right, and which is an illusion." So...YOU decide or choose what music means to you. Do you identify with it in some way or not? Personally, I don't think Metallica's 'Sad But True' is 'sad' at all! To me it's more of song saying, "I'm just like the rest of you who have ever felt this way...I'm YOU." Sometimes what you get out of a song can depend on the extent to which you allow the song to 'take you away'. I can still cry when I listen certain songs. One is "Desperado" by the Eagles...because I can identify with it personally...I once lived the life of 'drugs and thugs'...I have a deep understanding of pain and loss...so words like, "Desperado, why don't you come to your senses? You been out ridin' fences for so long now Oh, you're a hard one I know that you got your reasons These things that are pleasin' you Can hurt you somehow..." just get me ballin' like a little baby! Why? Because I've 'been there, done that'....or 'been there, felt that'. If anyone can listen to another one by them without getting water in their eyes...I don't know how they do it! That song would be, "The Sad Cafe". At this moment...I am reminded of a famous Nikola Tesla quote, "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." If you have even a basic understanding of what he's saying from a purely physics viewpoint - you can see that this is a LOT of what this thing we call 'music' is all about! Our bodies are quite like antennas/signal processors...we also send OUT signals...so we are transceivers as well! There have been experiments with devices that ran on a simple binary code/format...to measure intense human emotion on a massive scale. Would you believe me if I told you that they MEASURED the mass emotional effect of the people's reaction to 9/11!!?? (the sensors were already in place, but I do not believe for one minute that the people who put them there did so knowing what was going to happen that day...nobody has accused them of that either, as far as I know.) What they recorded, was the fact that the 'random' number generators...were suddenly spitting out ORDERED SETS OF NUMBERS! I wish I could remember every detail of the articles I've read about this...but, memory isn't what it used to be! There's a lot going on with music...it IS used to stimulate emotions...with and without the intent to do so. I stop for now...I could go on for days, but I've pretty much done what I wanted to do...which is just to attempt to get people to open their minds and think of things differently! Peace people...I'm not the judge of any of you...YOU ARE!

This morning I was out hunting and I had a raven vocalizing like crazy(I have never heard a raven be that vocal before) while flying around the field I was overlooking. I don’t know the folklore behind ravens, perhaps this song references this, but it certainly felt like it was a sign from my stepdad.

    I have loved this song since the day it was released, but it took on a whole different meaning to me when my big sister got diagnosed with cancer. From being «just» an emotional beatiful song, it was suddenly relatable and I was faced with the crippling fear you can see in the old mans face. Luckily my sister defeated the cancer and fought of the shadows chasing me. Like she always does and always have done. I don’t really have any other point in writing this than to thank Steven Wilson for this work of art. It somehow became my therapy trough the process! Thank you

    I lost my little sister two years ago. This song always made me very emotional. Knowing that he wrote this about his sister makes me feel someone who feels the same endless melancholy has perfectly captured the emotion. The video breaks my heart but reinforces the fact that my sister reaches out to me in my darkest hours and sends her strength and love to me.

    I just saw Steven Wilson and his band last Sunday night, November 13th. Here in Kansas City, Missouri. Its been at least eight years since Wilson has been to KC. It was when Porcupine Tree were touring Fear of a Blank Planet. Nonetheless, the 2000 fans at this small venue, were ready. Including myself. He performed the entire Hand.Cannot.Erase album, most of 4 1/2, back catalogue PT songs, a Prince cover, and the very last song, was this flawless gem. What a freakin spectacle to have behold.. I was in the 11th row and he played for three hours, truly incredible!

I met a small beetle who was trying to cross a street. i followed behind him because I wanted to help him get to safer ground. but I was too afraid to pick him up and a car was behind me. I couldn't even help one little guy. he didn't make it. I walked back inside and gave this song another listen. And I feel stupid because some would just say it's one bug among so many others. but I know I could have done more if I just tried to be the bigger guy. now I just feel helpless and full of regret. damn.

    There was one day when a bird came hurt into the living room. First I heard it desperately trying to get out of the TV antenna, at the top of the roof, and then it came out into the living room and stayied quiet on the sofa. We could see blood dripping on the wall. We saw it was hurt and everbody was too scared to try to get close to it. So I tried. I was scared as heck too. I tried to get closer with the most caution ever and it was getting away from me. The bird was also scared of me, it seemed. This story ends up with the bird at the bottom of the shelf (after it fell out of the sofa, trying to get away from me) and dead. It was alive when it fell out, but I was too scared to get close and try to pick it up. It died right when I convinced myself that I should do something about it. Dude...I cried. Until now I still think that it maybe could have been different if I were more brave. I buried him in the garden of my house, after really asking for its apologize for a few times. I hope it's in peace now.

    Just thinking of this song is enough to put a lump in my throat, and whenever I deem it fitting to watch and listen, I make sure to be alone so nobody has to witness the mess I become. None of Wilson's other songs have this power over me, but there's something downright demonic about the instrumentation, the visuals and the song's thematic relations between death, grief, love, human and animal, which completely destroys me.

I was going through such a hard time during them but this song changed my life for the better. This song was always so comforting to me yet so heartbreaking. Whenever I felt really down i'd play it. I resonated with the story and lyrics so much, it was as if it was made just for me and it validated my feelings of despair. When my funeral comes, whenever that may be, I hope this is played and I really hope this song and the creator become more known. I'm definitely going to buy the moon album 😄Although I still struggle a lot with my mental health I have faith that one day I will be able to come back to this video and see how much I have overcome. Steven Wilson has restored my faith in music. Not since I discovered Hendrix in the late 60's have I been this enthralled with an artist. The Raven That Refused to Sing is a song I simply cannot listen to without breaking down. IMO the ultimate goal of art is to convey or arouse emotion. This song does that for me. And I guess not just me... I played it for a woman I know and she wept as she listened.
