Consider this: this is an unplanned speech. Spielberg is a gifted storyteller, even on a conversational level. It seems to me that most if not all good directors are first and foremost excellent story tellers. Spielberg excels at this.

True story: Thomas Keneally wrote a book called "Searching for Schindler" about the making of Schindler's list and in 2007 he appeared in Dymocks bookstore in Sydney. I asked him to sign a copy and he asked me what I did for work. I told him I was a teacher. He signed it "To James, In your noble profession. Thomas Keneally." Just what Arnold Spielberg told his son about teaching.

The best part of this speech from this amazing man is at the end I think when he's talking about how your dream's and your meaning or purpose in life only whisper's and very rarely ever shouts was. That was the best way to put his speech at an end and I completely agree with what he's saying there, its beautiful. I can also really relate to some of Spielberg's story's apparently he was really bad at school, especially in English because he is dyslexic and as so I. Which is some what very inspirational to me.

And that mentality gave us, the audience, some of the greatest films of all time. Because he wasn’t worried about the money and boosting numbers, he was concerned about the quality and audience engagement and how they felt while they were watching what he created. Take that corporate Hollywood.

A bummer story: (Sorry for the length) So i absolutely love Steven as a Director. Now unlike all of you, its not because of how good his movies are. And they are amazing films. What I love about Steven is he is a very "Humble" and "Kind" Director. He doesn't lose his temper on set, he likes to goof around and act like a kid, play pranks on his cast, and overall does not have a mean bone in his body. From many different behind the scenes i've picked up on this. Empire of the Son's Christian Bale, got distracted by the explosions and the planes as the airfield was destroyed in ONE TAKE...he didn't follow any of Steven's direction ques and just stood there. Almost any director would lose his cool, act like a jerk. But Steven said...well we didn't do any of the running and jumping so....Let's just blow up the destroy buildings and try again. Master class demeanor. If you have not been on a film set you can't appreciate how rare this kind of behavior is. James Cameron, David O Russell, Michael Bay, and many others are notorious for yelling, cussing out crew, and making life just miserable on set. So needless to say growing up, I always wanted to work on one of Steven's films. It was my dream and why i moved to LA. Breaking into the film industry was easier in front of the camera then behind saldy and i never got the chance to work on a Steven film (Yet) or see him in the flesh. I ended up being a bodyguard of sorts for pretty much all red carpet events (Yes i've seen every talent you can name) But Steven would elude me lol. There would be premiers and screenings were it was whispered "Steven's car may pull up, be ready" but he never did. Until last year, that would all change. 1917's premier was going to happen the following day but the cast and crew had a special screening the day before. Mostly for press. But guess who popped in to say hello and wish his friend who directed it good luck....I finally was looking at my Idol director! But then, i realized something sad. I wasn't nearly as excited to see him, i should have been jumping up and down inside, thrilled and lost in the moment getting to stand next to him and listen to him speak...i felt...nothing. Im so bummed and I don't know why i wasn't more excited to see him. But it was certainly a blow and seems to have confirmed that maybe i lost the will to keep on trying to break into the film industry (At least from a production standpoint) And granted, its not like i get to hang out with him and say hello, so maybe the experience would be different person to person...but im pretty depressed about it. As sad as I am I won't give up, As Mr. Hanks would say "Tomorrow the sun will rise, who knows what the tide may bring"

I think you just built up the experience in your head and the reality of it all could not match up. Having said that, here you are on KZread with a Steven Spielberg story. You will look back and smile upon it I am sure. I also met my idol when he was filming Munich in Malta. He actually took the time - right before yelling 'action' to turn to my brother and me and wave to us - twice (once each). A humble genius indeed.

My first film was a rip-off of the popular Six Million Dollar Man TV series in the '70s. There was half a roll of unexposed film in my dad's camera. I asked him if I could shoot the rest of the roll. Thankfully he said yes! My brother starred as bionic Steve Austin. The camera had 2x speed overcranking for slow motion, so I was able to film my brother running, jumping and throwing things in slow motion, just like the show. Of course I got addicted to it. I realized I had a natural sense of storytelling, just needed to hone the craft, work on light, composition, editing. Craft would come later! Steven's films in the '70s were right on time for me, a masterclass, as he was pushing the envelope with low-light cinematography and visual-FX!

I can tell you the meaning of life: A lot of it is self-evident, as ALL Life indicates its own meaning and purpose, via the consistencies that display across all forms of life. All life grows, all life progresses and learns. All creatures seek contentment, peace and happiness. All life seeks to progress itself by procreating / multiplying itself and helping others - mainly its own - to also progress. We progress and find happiness as we choose correctly and wisely and continue to grow. You might enjoy my upcoming book, "Winning", DH Towers. released August 2015 [Pub. Xlibris]
