Steven Pinker's battle for the future of free thinking

More than a hundred academics at Harvard University have joined an effort to defend free speech on campus and protect colleagues who face harassment because of their work, scholars leading the initiative have said.
The founders of the Council on Academic Freedom said they were acting in the face of mounting threats to free expression at universities all over the country.

    Pinker is a respected intellectual heavy weight. Bizarre that he even has to fight this fight. The world is going backwards :-(

    I was a student in the early 1970s and students back then were loud and always demonstrating about something. Most were fashionably left-wing. Trotsky and Sartre were all the rage. It is different today. Many academics and students seem to want to deliver punishment beatings to people who don't share their views. The nastiness is contemptible.

    I agree with him that he's not "defending the right from the left" but defending fundamental freedoms and common sense because despite the fact that the far left are to blame for this issue, he's not defending either political wing but defending free thinking in academics. I'm a left leaning independent and I consider the agenda of the far left as problematic as the agenda of the far right. The far left are not allies of mine when they're attacking fundamental freedoms and I know for fact that I'm not alone in that sentiment among people on the left or other left leaning independents like myself. I firmly believe that social media leads us to believe that most people are on the extreme side of whichever political spectrum they prescribe to when in reality, the vast majority of people are realistically closer to center than the extreme side of their political preference on both sides of the isle. I wish there was a way to squash the illusion that social media has created.

    Absolutely. I am a moderate lefty. I have strong egalitarian, social democratic - sometimes even slightly socialistic - tendencies. And I am a 'progressive'. But this New Left I find quite deeply regressive, authoritarian and ultra-orthodox. Identity politics, CRT, reparation philosophy etc are divisive to their core. And scapegoating of many who are blameless and are not privileged.

    @@danguee1 In fact, they want the old system to be kept intact. That's why the ones who owns "progressives" today did a complete 180 and wants to reintroduce racist concepts. Their theories don't work unless there's racism, so they push for it indirectly through bs stuff.

    There is a balancing act between bigotry, historical racism, and being too woke. Probably it is a healthy debate and we can not all have the same opinion. The worst thing is when it creeps into politics and gets weaponized. We should not cancel anyone making a statement. E.g. comedians who kick in all directions should have the leverage to continue that. It is first when they keep on targeting a minority it becomes a problem.

    Free speech does not mean that anyone owes you a podium, a megaphone or a speaking engagement.

  • @patavinity1262

    @patavinity1262

    Firstly, that depends entirely on your definition of 'free speech'. Secondly, the active silencing of the expression of certain opinions, ideas or scientific facts is not really the same thing as denying someone a speaking engagement, wouldn't you agree? Thirdly, the point at issue here is not only the freedom of speech, but academic freedom, which in fact *does* require that a variety of ideas be listened to.

    Actually it does, you give one voice a platform but not allow another then its not balanced and not free speech. Social media needs to be inclusive, decentralised and free for all to post content. You cant have regulated free speech, its a contradiction
