    For anyone who doesn't realise, the whole 'go for the groin' thing, ignoring the obvious blunt force trauma from a knee or kick, actually dates back to at least roman legionnaire times. There are major arteries running down both legs, in addition to ball and cup joints at the hip, which makes it very hard to armour, and thus an easy way to secure an efficient kill. (In advance, Australian English spelling, guys.)

    Cup One yes in fact, i have been stabbed, beaten and held at gunpoint on different occasions . . . i had metal pipe and i still got cut and stabbed (in the arm) and i was trying to keep him away from me using my brain not just swinging wildly at him . . . and the guy with the gun, i just did what he said because if he wanted to shoot me he wouldn't of asked for my stuff he would of shot me and taken it . . . and besides all that Conan has no training or fighting ability to speak of and he defeated everyone with ease in this skit, it was obviously set up to just be for entertainment purposes with a very tiny sliver of truth thrown in there . . . . if you think this will really help you in an actual fight you should try it and see what happens

  • @cupone1960

    @cupone1960

    The Fractured But Whole The skit part is irrelevant and it's true that it does not depict the real situation, it's very obvious that it's for comedy. However, the first part where he was taught the critical range of knife is very useful, how he was taught to hit vital areas are also correct. The topic of talking to distract the offender is also very useable. The usage of various items for self defense give rise to actions that can be taken on day to day basis. So overall the video give a good general ideas of how self-defense could work. Yet, you are correct, the first step that has to be taken is to yield to the offender if he's not going to surely take your life or family (I think in this video they are entirely missing this). Just give them what they ask for plain simple, however it has to be reminded that, on occasion where the offender purpose is to take your life, learning basic defense like this is very useful to stay calm and know what to do. Try take up some class and you will understand and next time you might not be injured. Good luck :)

  • @cupone1960

    @cupone1960

    The Fractured But Whole I reckon that it was not said anywhere that this should be use right away neither it is said to be use at the first thing. Nonetheless, it's useful when there are no options left, when the attacker is going for your life or seemingly if they break into your house and could harm your family. And, no, talking, calming down or distract the attackers doesn't agitate them. If you had not talk to distract him, it could be worse. Yes runaway is the correct way, and I believe there are not a lot that is needed to be teach about that, except if the attacker is at close distance and you need to disarm or get out to safety. With gun, this is largely difference you cannot runaway, if the attacker is going for your life or your family, it's arguably better to move in and disarm the attacker. What is missing here (in this single video, should not be compare to what he may teach as a whole) is simply what I said above about yielding mentality and the fact of careful day- to day planning. Are you going to be in a dangerous area whilst traveling? What's the closest police station/hospital to your target location or home? What's the critical (dangerous) zone that you need to pass to get to your target location? These are the few of the tactics and mentality that need to be taught first before anything else in self defense class. What come after are the technique shown in the videos which are widely used by police/military. However, yes, you shouldn't try this without going to a proper self-defense class. But it still stands that, in the case that yielding will procure a fatal outcome to you or your family, it's better to follow "something". And yes, I have been attack by a group of drunk teenager before using broken glass bottles and metal pipe, and these techniques do work. However, why did I use it although I know yielding is better? First, the group of attackers were not aiming to take any things from me, they will hurt me, second I am a trained personnel in the army, self-defense instructor. In this case, yielding will not do anything except getting myself hurt more.

    Self defense isn't to fight. Its to disarm your attacker as soon as possible.

    "Everything goes to the groin" because it's one of the weakest / most sesitive spots on a human being... doesn't take many hits to the groin to take out a guy or distract / neutralize him / her, so in real life the groin is a very good self-defense target :)
