    The technique he used is called "legato". You don't use a pick or right hand. It's just "hammer on's" and "pull off's". Very hard to do it over a period of time. Most of the people do play some legato licks, but an entire song is on a different level. Also it's very hard to be clean when legato.

    I suggest you listen to Windows to the soul by Steve Vai. He is technically proficient as you can see here, but he writes so beautiful melodies that's why you should listen to my suggestion. Cheers!
