agreed. guthrie is by far the better improviser (better than most/many jazz-centric players). for decades via was my favorite guitarist... until i heard guthrie. i think steve probably has a wider range of compositional scope and influences which makes for slightly less accessible songs... heading toward experimental (not all of them obviously, but you don't hear GG referencing and delving into 'traditional hungarian wedding songs'). probably a similar comparison to be made between via and satriani. whereas guthrie is far more blues/rock/jazz rooted which makes it more 'in' and ear friendly. the musical landscape would be a lesser place without either of them.

After thinking about the term ''game changer'' I came to the conclusion that there will never be any game changing guitarists in the future! Everything possible has been already created. Van Halen, Hendrix and many others changed the game in their own way, coming up with a new styles that became milestones in the time frame of music history. But it's evident that ingenious and brilliant sound combinations and revolutionary styles can't be infinite, and most of them have been created , the game has been changed. I mean, despite the democratisation of musical creation, with billions of low-cost, hi-quality, mass propagated home produced music... since a few decades, we didn't see many ''Sgt Peppers'' or ''Dark Side Of The Moon'' albums come by very often, did we? Anyways, Guthrie seems to be, in 2023, the greatest one on top of the pyramid. While he may not be a game changer, by having such an insane talent and deversified skills, he still might actually be the greatest guitarist of all time! I truly believe that any of those great guitarists from the present or the past would all be impressed as hell while having the privilege to witness this incredible guitar wizard. At least I am!

Eddie couldn’t read music and he said if he had been able to he probably would’ve never came up with all the unique stuff he did. He also said that’s why its called music theory and not music fact. Vai isn't impressed here by Guthrie's simple pick scrapes on the first three strings, but a cool moment captured nonetheless.

@@Kyrelelthat's what he's doing. He's scraping the edge of his pick on the G, B, and high E strings to make those noises. Are you seeing something different? Govan is a monster player, but not doing anything spectacular in this clip.
