Steve Vai: Dealing w FAMILY ALCOHOLISM, VERY CANDID

Ойын-сауық

On this Steve Vai inteview, Steve opens up like never before: On working with Frank Zappa, following his bliss and how this has governed his decision-making, first and foremost… top 3 music experiences… the personal backstory to his song, Junkie… dealing with family alcoholism… a unique insight into forgiveness… Yogi Bear, Tom Waits, best decision he ever made… getting out of a depression… some of his biggest financial wins, The Illusion of Time, and so much more. This was an incredibly candid and deep discussion, one of my favorites and a MUST listen:

Man, 17 minutes in and I'm already in tune with what Steve is talking about. "If you're making excuses, then you don't really wanna do it." That one kinda hit me hard as a creative person... definitely made me question my motivations because I'm guilty of doing just that. Guitar hero status aside, Steve Vai is a very deep and thoughtful individual. This is an enjoyable and enlightening conversation.

Johnny Vai was far from a perfect person (who is). Without him, Steve wouldn't have developed into the greatness that awaited him. The neighbors complained many times that Steve was playing waaaaaay too loud. Mr. Vai refused to tell Steve to turn it down, no matter how many times the neighbors complained. When it came time to pay for the tuition bills at Berklee, Mr. Vai came through for his son. RIP Mr. and Mrs. Vai, you did well.

With due respect: "I continue to work on stuff I can't do" is the attitude of a person working on themselves continually. Steve obviously loves the chase of perfection, like many of us, and recognizes perfection cannot be achieved - but that a result can be very appreciated. He is simply very self aware, and life is a path of continual awakening. Namaste brother.

The guitar is so huge and vast no one to this day has mastered all the facets of it(imho). Just too huge in what it can do. Yes he is an virtuoso like Gary Moore but sadly the human does not live long enough to play all the styles and technics you can with the guitar. And most are rooted in a few styles they always play in.

  • @ricksmusicroom2366

If you play guitar and you land on the right spot every time, you’ve mastered your instrument, he is a MASTER, is he not a master craftsmen? Does what he writes and plays sound masterful? Than he is a master, when you have total control of what your playing and total command of your instrument than you are a master. In martial arts you can be a master in certain styles and not others, still makes you a master of a domain. That’s all that matters, you can’t expect every master guitarist to learn every singe style especially if some of those styles don’t appeal to him/her at all. Steve Vai is a master craftsmen of the guitar, no question no doubt. MASTER GUITARIST 🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

I think what Steve is talking about early in the interview is the point where there is no delay, no thought involved in your playing. You are completely connected to the instrument, and what is coming out of the speakers in completely what you intend, without any thought. It is though you are only the conduit, what is in our head is exactly what the result is. I have been fortunate enough to experience this on several occasions, but I have not been able to maintain it for any extended period. What happens with me is I get overcome with emotion, literally to tears. It is complete bliss for a time, but the emotion actually gets in the way and interferes with the process.

What your saying sounds so absolutely pretentious - BUT you're absolutely spot on haha. I've had the great fortune of reaching that secret spot once or twice. But like you said - you get overcome. I think its something that everyone ought to experience at least once but so few do.

I'm obviously late to the game, having just heard this for the first time. Interesting insights. Steve has been pretty open about sharing personal stuff in the past, but this one seemed to be more in depth and yet more down to earth at the same time. I find a lot of the spiritual talk leaves me cold, but it did not dominate this interview (like it did so many others). I thought the 666 story was pretty funny (although I'm sure it was not to Steve as a child) - the first thing that came to mind was his Jack Butler performance. I'd love to get an update. I know he has been dealing with some RSI issues for years, and recently had some surgery (not sure it is related to the RSI issues or not). It would be informative to hear a) how he got it, b) could he have avoided it (i.e. advice for others to avoid problems) and c) what his prognosis is and d) what the rehab therapy is like.
