Again I loved the way you played collective souls shine with the drop D on your acoustic that with some serious strumming. I learned that pretty quick was wondering I asked before if you could show me the notes to the solo on smashing pumpkins stand inside your love that would be awesome if you could do that.

Here's why you're a great teacher - you not only know the content, but you can communicate it SO WELL. Communication skills are an artform like music. And your communication is so clear and understandable. Yes, the content takes practice, but having the student understand what they need to practice is first and foremost. Bravo!

I got my first guitar almost 18 months ago and started teaching myself to play. I do not know how I tripped over this video a few days ago- but I am so glad I did. I watched with my guitar in my lap and OMG- I got it- I get it!!!! Almost instantly totally changed the way I play- two days later- I finally feel like I am a guitar player. This 64 year old rocker wannabe THANKS YOU!(I have a youtube channel where I have chronicled my learning journey via videos. You can see the huge difference in the way I play on the video I posted just today compared to any of the ones prior and it is all because I watched this video!

I've been playing guitar for 3 years and have watched hundreds of you tube videos. This is by far the best information yet. I have good technical skills but no rhythm. I sold my first guitar to a friend because in a weeks time he sounded better than me. He didn't have the technical skills I had but he was a drummer and he had the RHYTHM.

The thing about teaching is you don't do it for the $$$ you donit because you are passionate about it. You can tell he is passionate about it because how he explains the subjects he speaks about.

Music is about "communication", 'speaking' to the listener through your instrument even if there's no vocals. 'Talk' to your listener through the instrument the way you would talk to them verbally, with that same emotion and emphasis. Done well, the listener will 'know' exactly what you're 'saying'. Which is why some songs 'grab' you more than others. You get that 'message'.

I'm a self taught guitarist who has been playing for a few years but could never really get as far as I wanted. Every time I came across a tutorial I was bored by the theory or the gimmicks/ego of the teacher. I stumbled across Steve Stine today and have really enjoyed and learnt from the three videos I've watched today. I'm not American so don't use the word "awesome" naturally but bloody hell this guy is awesome. I just wish I'd found you earlier. I can feel me improving already. Fantastic. A teacher who really cares and feels what he shares.

I was doing this intuitively when I first learnt to play some songs many years ago. Now I'm starting from the beginning and following some guitar lessons on KZread I've encountered various patterns of ups and downs and I thought my style was chaotic and I needed to put it in order. What a relief to have found this lesson! I love the metaphor of the ocean - brilliant!! That's exactly what I feel when I'm strumming the guitar. But I would never have come up with such a great way to take this message across so that others could benefit. Your are a great teacher!

A thought that I always come back to is this: Your fingering hand is *what you know* (scales, chords). Your strumming hand is *who you are*. That's where you're going to find your next level. You can make a chord rigid or soft, aggressive or beautiful, loud or quiet all based on what your strumming hand does. Clapton's Unplugged album is dripping with this concept, and I think one of the greatest examples of dynamic guitar playing ever recorded start to finish.

Great lesson! Can’t believe I’ve only stumbled across this video now. This is something that I’ve been pulling at for months by chance, this would have saved me a lot of time. One thing worth bringing in here is how the ups and downs tie in with the beats. So if you can get the tempo of the strums right, then you can let your arm swing away like a pendulum and focus on being creative like this video shows.

Me - a teenager of the 60's, and I didn't learn the guitar!! Just decided that learning it isn't on my bucket list, it IS my bucket list. Had a couple of lessons with a tutor, face-to-face, but it's not always easy to work as they want you to do. You Tube, I thought, there's bound to be some videos on there! Well there is - the good, the bad and the ugly!! I am SO glad that I dropped on to your videos, Steve, because you put it across so well and seem to be teaching me the things I want to learn. So, I'll be listening and strumming away most nights with you - keep up the good work ;-)

brilliant lesson! My sound is rhythm and melody. I am definitely a strumming guy and it took me a long, long time to make my playing sound unique. I wish I had this lesson years ago. It would have taken a lot of grief out of my playing and I wouldn't have wasted so much time doing the wrong things. This was truly inspirational. I learned a lot in just 13 minutes. I am in love with the ocean analogy. That is a smart way to think about it. You are an awesome teacher and an awesome guitar player too. Thank You for putting this out there!!

Dude, amazing! Best Leason i have watched yet for 6 months. Even over Yousician. You were real with it, unlike so many others, you understood the struggle that so many musicians forget once they become better. Rhythm is whats hard, not strumming, and I just heard myself have rhythm and am so glad i found your channel. Thanks man, look forward to other leasons of yours.

Hello from Dublin Ireland. I started about 8 months ago, just bought a left handed acoustic, had never played guitar in my life. My first electric guitar arrived a few days ago, a lefty SG style 'devil horn' that I fell in love with. Practicing bar chords etc at the moment, and it seems to be coming on alright. Learned a few tunes too. Glad I watched your strumming vid, as it's amazing how much good advice can be picked up from a lesson like this. It's good to lose bad habits before they become hard to lose. Thank you so much. Subscribed.
