Steve Senes - Marshall JMP-1 w/Voodoo Amps Platinum Mod

Музыка

Guitar Player Magazine's Guitar Superstar 2009 Steve Senes gives a detailed walkthrough of the Marshall JMP-1 rack mount preamp with Voodoo Amplification's Platinum Modification.
Gear Details:
Marshall JMP-1 Preamp with Voodoo Amplification's Platinum Mod
Update
The settings I used in this video can be found here:
www.voodooamps.com/home/Modifi...
Marshall 4x12 w/Warehouse Guitar Speakers Veteran 30's and HM75's in an X pattern.
The Veteran 30 is mic'd with a Sennheiser 421. The HM75 is mic'd with a Shure SM57 - both directly connected to my Mac and recorded with Apple Logic Pro X. There is no post mic processing done whatsoever. What the mics picked up is what you hear.
TC Electronic G Major II is only connected for the second section of the video, where noted.
Marshall 9200 Power Amp is completely stock - just purchased off eBay with it's original (old) power tubes - 5881's.

best preamp ever made. ever since 1997, I've used a JMP-1 preamp and now own 3. live, or in the studio, or direct to PA/desk, or plugged into the return of an amp head, this unit kills.. I have'nt tried the voodoo amp mod, but the transformer replacement "mod" sounds interesting. come on Marshall, start work on the JMP-2. there are just too many people waiting!

When I bought mine at a pawn shop a couple years ago I was surprised at how great it sounded stock. I'd heard for years how great the Voodoo Amps mod is and bought it with the intention of having this done. The best way for me to describe the difference is the overdrive channels just sound more 'open'. More 'real' if you will. The clean channel, though, is much much better, more Fender-like. Stock it was unusable to me. With the mods, there isn't much tonal territory I can't achieve!

That's really kind of you. When I do these videos I really do make an effort to get the sound across as I hear it - it's good to know when people take notice! Here lately I'm using loadboxes and speaker impulse responses for my guitar stuff & it REALLY makes a difference because I can crank the amps to where they need to be to get the sounds I'm going for, and not worry about pissing off my neighbors or anything. Makes a huge difference! In the near future you're gonna see a lot more video content from me with the recording done this way so stay tuned!!!

Steve Senes thank you very much for the advice Steve and luckily I found a shop that is not too far away from me that does pro- amp maintenance. I will show them this video as a vocal point so they know what type of mods to apply to my gear, and I still mean stick with the tubes that were already fitted inside which were Solvtec. The tone of those tubes sounds very awesome but if you have any advice any other tube that sounds just as great I'm all ears. At least money won't be a factor because my late father's estate will came through Woohoo!!!!

I've been looking for the JMP-1 sound for at least 10 years and found it quite by accident. Today I use it in combination with Marshall EL84 20/20 and two Orange PPC112 with Vintage 30 speakers and it sounds amazing even at low sound levels for playing at home. I'm afraid to modify it because it sounds great.

The JMP=1 is an amazing piece for sure but I gotta say, totally honestly, the Voodoo Mod's on this thing are legit and I love 'em! That said, if you dig it stock, more power to ya cause it is an amazing piece of gear!

Hey Randy, thanks for your kind words! It's definitely an amazing sounding rig! What did I pay for it? Well...(LOL)...I watched it in that pawn shop for, probably, 9-10 months - it started up around $750. Finally I walked in one day and it was down to $325. I offered $300 out the door (cause that's all I had and I didn't wanna risk waiting and having someone snag it out from under me LOL) and they accepted. I bought it strictly with the intent of sending it to Voodoo because Trace's JMP-1 mod is legendary. Needless to say he didn't disappoint :-)

  • @TheGuitarNerdShow

    @TheGuitarNerdShow

    4 жыл бұрын

To be honest I'm not sure. If I'm understanding correctly, you want the effects from Eleven. I haven't used Eleven so I'm not sure what it's capabilities or the internal signal chain are but if you can bypass the amp modeling in Eleven, then I'd say the best way would be to go from your guitar into any pedals (if any) then into the JMP-1 then from the main output of the JMP-1 into Eleven. I haven't tried the effects loop in the JMP-1 but was told by someone I very much trust that the effects loop doesn't sound good so it's better to go from the output of the JMP-1 into any effects. Hope this helps.

Ya know, I don't really know what all Voodoo does in the modifications but the difference is pretty stark. For one, I hated the stock clean channel - now I love it - it's second only to my Fender Deluxe Reverb and I can get it pretty close to that! Both drive channels sound better too. The unit is just, overall, more touch responsive, tones are more pleasing to the ear and I can get a really wide variety of sounds now that I simply couldn't before.... As for cost - you'd have to check Voodoo's website for that. www.voodooamps.com

Steve, I'm a retired refinery engineer, not a pro musician, so reading their website, I guess I don't qualify for what voodoo amps does. I play a Mojave Plexi-45 and Mojave Scorpion 50 watt heads, and these amps use Mercury Magnetics transformers. Thanks for the response!

2:22-2:35. Sold me. First off, great guitar my main is the same but came Seymour Duncan Blackout Metals and AHB-1n. I had a short run with a JB and ripped it back out in favor of the EMG X series 60 and 81. More headroom (than standard EMGs) and still tight and aggressive with a tiny bit of compression. I've owned a Veteran 30 for a little over a year now using it in a 6505+ 112 and just recently sold the Celestion Vintage 30 it was contending with. Just got a 4x12 to go with my new Bugera Trirec (awesome budget amp) and I purchased a single HM75 to put with it. I have been torn between matching the HM75s with Vets or Retros. The other two speakers are stock Eminence Blue Tick Hounds btw.-Garbage-. The Veteran by itself made such an improvement being considerably more sensitive that I was excited (after a long and laborious period of research) to receive my HM75. Your Crunchy Rythym tone sounds super aggressive and exactly what I'm looking for. I'm more excited than ever to receive my HM75 and purchase another as well as another Vet as opposed to 2 new Retros. Thank you.

troymassey90 I'm glad you like what you hear. I've been a fan of WGS Speakers now for a good long time. For me, at least, they're a great alternative to their more pricey Celestion counterparts (as you can hear). I'm hoping to pick up another set just like these to put into another 4x12 cab that is currently being used for gigs....

Steve Senes I agree. While they may not hold up on stage or on a record against the "industry Standard" in the opinions of pros, they make amazing replacements for jamming and I would certainly argue they are pro quality and could offer so much more than Celestion in a lot of cases. Especially for the price. I'm going with a Vet 30/HM75 X in my main cab as I explained already. I'll then look into another 4x12 and maybe get some Retro 30s and experiment. 1st on the list is a 6505+ Head though socI,can blow these things up.

To be honest, I'm not currently using this setup & it's kinda packed away. That said, though, the patches in this video are what I've always used with this setup - a Clean patch, a nice heavy crunchy patch, a lead patch and a 'classic rock' patch with less gain than the crunch patch. Everything I did on gigs used one of those 4 sounds. I used this rig the better part of 2 years in a professional working band & really didn't have to change the patches very much - so what you see in the video are the patches I use with this rig.

Had Trace mod my combo amp - worth every penny. Been using a boost that's buffered bypass into the front of the amp and have had to reduce the gain. The amp really response well to the buffer. Sigh...now I REALLY want a Wampler Tumnus to go with this thing. Steve - now all you have to have Trace work his magic on the 9200 - unless you already have. The JMP-1 appears to be incredibly easy to play, get the power amp worked on and it will be flat out scary.

You'd be amazed at how amazing this rig sounds with the 9200 being stock. When I made this video, I didn't realize it but the 9200 was pretty messed up. I took it to my local tech & had him retube it, where he found some other problems. When I got it back, the sound improved a good 75% - it's flat out scary now.....

It's hard to compare the two. The JMP-1 is more flexable, of course. The clean channel is more of a genuine clean channel, great for spanky funk stuff. Overdrive channels sound amazing as well...

That's hard to say. I found my JMP-1 in a pawn shop for a really good price & sent it to Voodoo for the mods. That said it's been my main rig for a few months shy of 2 years now & I love it!

If you're interested I released a full length Instrumental CD in 2010 called De-Evolution Of Theory. It's on iTunes/Apple Music, Amazon, Spotify, etc. Under the artist name Senes... Recording quality is so-so, was just learning the art of recording and mixing LOL!!

Really? That's surprising. With mine, what I noticed immediately was that, without the mods, the clean channel was almost unusable for me (I prefer a more 'Fender-y' clean tone). The rhythm crunch was similar but feels 'cleaner' with the mods. The Lead gain (I haven't used the unit for a while, don't recall how they're labeled) seems, to me, to be smoother, more singing. But you're right, stock, they're a great sounding unit!

Tonelives When I got my JMP-1 I was a little hesitant to get it modified because it does sound great, but on my current gig I need a great clean channel sound & the JMP-1 stock just doesn't have that. And I'd had a couple other amps modded from Voodoo and love 'em so I sent it off. When I got it back I could not believe the difference! The overdrive tones went from great to HOLY SHIT!!! The cleans went from 'meh' to fantastic. Seriously, send it to Voodoo, you won't be disappointed! As for the 9200, mine is stock and with the JMP-1 sounds great. Having had two Marshall heads modified at Voodoo I have no doubt the mod on the 9200 would make it even better, I'm just not in a position (time or money-wise) to ship a 75lb power amp up there for the mod. But with regard to the JMP-1, ten times out of ten I'd send it up for the Platinum mod.

They -Voodamps -just butchered my 79 JMP 50 many years back.. They did their “flagship” mod pack.. btw no question Trace is a great guy-backs his work but, I gave up, brought it to my tech. Apparently Voodoo had tried to cover their new circuit by dumping a black tar substance all over the board.. It was a mess and sounded really weird.. Hahaha. These clips sound good though.. 👍🏼
