We definitely don't have any Steven McQueen's in Hollywood today. He was truly a gifted actor. I love his movies!

Steve McQueen always looked completely at ease with tools of any trade, be it a car, a firearm, a horse, a wrench, or even a hat.

IF YOU LOOK AT STEVE MCQUEEN'S FILMS YOU REALLY SEE HOW UNIQUE HE WAS. WHEN HE DIED HE LEFT A HUGE VOID AS AN ACTOR. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM. R.I.P. MR. McQUEEN.

No doubt about it, Steve McQueen was the image of Cool everywhere he went and in everything he did and it makes stories about him so intriguing. Coupled with his superstardom, the stories about him take on a larger than life persona all their own. The motorcycle story has some really good irony/coolness ever and that's why we will always love Steve McQueen. So sad we lost him way too soon.

I frew up in the Antelope Valley desert (outside of L.A.) where Steve was known to ride his motorcycle quite often. I dashed into the grocery store one night but stopped in my tracks just outside the door, was the most awesome motorcycle ever...covered with mud. I stopped to admired it then went in. and noticed a quiet man looking for orange juice, and he had truly amazing blue eyes. In AV we are used to movie stars, production companies, everyone has been an extra etc etc, and I felt like a 'tourist' or 'civilia' in that I had a very hard time not staring into those blue eyes. By this time I knew he was Steve McQueen and the bike out front was his. had an overflowing cart of groceries, and he had a carton of orange juice...I let him go ahead of me at the check out. What a silly claim to fame, but I love telling the story of meeting Steve McQueen at Alpha Beta. He was hard to miss, and I"m glad he was not swampted by fans, but we were respectful and he was too. Nice man, and what an actor!!

I must be one of the few who loved his Tom Horn movie. I know he was ill and under pressure but there's something wonderfully atmospheric and redolent of the Old West in there + the wonderful Slim Pickens!

Growing up in Southern California it was not uncommon to see actors in various venues, Ram Football games, Dodger Games etc. Toured the Warner Bros lot one day with fellow who knew a lady that worked for the studio. Always enjoyed Steve McQueen in almost everything he did. Was sad to hear that he died in Mexico alone while seeking treatment for a tumor.

Your program is top notch! Good camera work, quality video and pictures of all the great stars. Steve McQueen was my favorite after Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is number one because he made PALE RIDER-probably my favorite movie of all time. Wanted Dead or Alive never got dated! Brilliant to this day. Cheers!

Rob, seeing Steve McQueen on those motorcycles reminded me of an incident he was involved in while filming "The Sand Pebbles" in Taiwan. It occurred long before I entered the Air Force, but a retired USAF NCO I later worked with related it to me because he was personally involved. During the 1960s the USAF operated from an airbase in the country, and he was stationed there as a Security Policeman (SP). McQueen had shipped in a custom motorcycle to use for riding around the countryside. On one of his road trips he had gotten involved in an accident with a Taiwanese man. My associate responded to the scene along with a Chinese police officer. I don't recall all the details, but at some point the matter got so heated that McQueen apparently struck one of the locals. By this time a large crowd had gathered, and their mood became very dark when he hit the man, with each person silently glaring at him. The SP then quietly, but firmly told McQueen, "Do exactly as I say or we're going to end up as two red spots on the road." He managed to extricate them both without further incident, but even 15 years later, as he recalled the event, it was obvious to me he remained a bit peeved at the danger they had needlessly been placed in.

If he struck the man I doubt it was a sucker punch. He probably needed to defend himself from aggressor.

@@godgunsandgoldens As best I can recall the story, McQueen struck him out of anger, not self-defense. I don't recall if he hit him, shoved him, or slapped him, but I think it was a slap. As for the provocation, it may have been a reaction to something the other man did or said. I really don't remember, but I have read other accounts that indicate McQueen could be a bit of a hothead when angered, so it wouldn't surprise me if his action was out of line. I should correct one thing I said in my original post. I mentioned that my associate was an Air Force Security Policeman (SP) at the time. Actually, they were called Air Police (AP) back then, but 1966 was also the year they were renamed Security Police to better reflect their growing mission of guarding airbases in South Vietnam. In 1997 the organization was again renamed, this time to Security Forces (SF), to reflect the continuing evolution of their mission. I only bring up this point in case any former military types read it and think I'm talking out of my hat by using the wrong jargon.
