Thank you for this. I believe I was 7 or 8 when I first learned about this “wild and crazy guy” who could make me laugh but for some weird reason he sometimes played a banjo. It made sense when he did it as part of his comedy, but I noticed sometimes he played with without any jokes or funny material to go with it. He never said why. As I got older I watched his movie career and his continuing television appearances. I learned he also wrote a lot of these movies. Then in the late 1990s & early 2000s I learned he had started writing books, novellas, plays, and other pieces for various magazines. Then came the teaming up with the Steep Canyon Rangers, several bluegrass albums, a musical he wrote with Edie Brickell, and it was eventually a live comedy & music show with Martin Short and the Steep Canyon Rangers where I finally got to see him perform live with one of my sons. He’s one of the most fascinating entertainers to me. I honestly don’t know how I could choose a favorite of all his contributions, but the older I get the more I appreciate his incredible musical talent and I can’t get enough of videos like this where you not only let me see the songs performed, but his hilarious banter with the band and the audience. This video has been one of my favorites. Thanks again. For me, this is what makes KZread so special.

Its easy to see youre a bluegrass player. Ive been playing clawhammer for 40 years, and you're pretty off on the right hand technique. We teach to cut the nails. The index and middle fingers have different sounds when theyre developed. You cant develop the fingers with nails or picks. As you play, the right hand calluses too. The fingernails flatten out and and curve toward the point of the finger. With short nails, the string hits the nail and slides off onto the callous and creates the cluck. Without the cluck, you're just strumming, thats not clawhammer. In clawhammer, we dont strum the strings. It is what it sounds like, a claw used like a hammer. The hand comes down on the strings in the direction of the head. Its a striking motion. A thump against the banjo head. Clawhammer uses the head as percussion. Its a drum and we use as part of the rhythm. You made the same mistake most people make in thinking that frailing and clawhammer are the same. Theyre almost opposite of each other. Frailing is more gentle to the instrument. Almost loving. I love frailing against modern music. Often blending in clawhammer and 3 finger. As far as starting frailing, this was a great video. As far as clawhammer goes, there was no clawhammer in this video.
