The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

    Why did Sullivan do a Beatles cover show? Had the Beatles just announced that they had broken up? I remember the group publicly announced it around March 1970.

  • @TomElvisSmith

    @TomElvisSmith

    @@Themanwhocameback2 Likely just because their songs were so popular. Singers loved doing their songs on variety shows. It may have also been to remind audiences of their success on his TV show. Paul McCartney was a part of this episode, although on videotape, not live, but his segments probably won't be uploaded due to copyright issues.

    I remember seeing this on Ed Sullivan, didn't they meet on a TV show? This is musical royalty. Sadly these days are gone. After Vietnam I resumed my career as a professional drummer I had the honor of backing the temptations at the Cincinnati jazz festival in 73. Archie bell and the drells along with Jr walker . I studied percussion at uc and could sight read. Today's musicians seldom do. I saw Steve and edie at Beverly hills supper club before it burnt down, they were great. We were all blessed to have lived through those years. Stay safe.
