Steve Lawrence - Bewitched

Музыка

"Bewitched," the television comedy starring Dick York and Elizabeth Montgomery as Darrin and Samantha Stephens, man and witch - er, wife, premiered in 1964.
The theme song was written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller. Greenfield had written a number of successful songs with Neil Sedaka. Keller later recalled, "The pilot had used Frank Sinatra's 'Witchcraft,' but they didn't want to pay for 'Witchcraft,' so they asked us to write something. We only had a week to write the song, do the demo, and get it out to California, and they accepted it and they put it on." But when the show aired the following season, an instrumental version of the song was used with music provided by Warren Baker who composed music for the series.
Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller also wrote the theme song for "Gidget."

Steve Lawrence recorded the song and it was used for the flip-side of his 1964 single "I Will Wait For You." As far as I've been able to determine, it was never released on any album. In 2005 when the movie starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell premiered, the song was included on the soundtrack, 41 years after it had been written.
For this video, I used video excerpts from the original 1964 pilot episode of "Bewitched" along with photographs of Elizabeth Montgomery.
When "Bewitched" premiered in 1964, Elizabeth Montgomery was 31 years old; Dick York was 36.
Watching Ms. Montgomery and looking at the photographs, I have to say that she was one of most beautiful television actresses in the past 40 years. She is greatly missed!
BEWITCHED
(Words and Music by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller)
Bewitched! Bewitched!
You've got me in your spell.
Bewitched! Bewitched!
You know your craft so well.
Before I knew what you were doing
I looked in your eyes.
That brand of woo that you've been brew-in'
took me by surprise.
You witch! You witch!
One thing is for sure -
That stuff you pitch,
just hasn't got a cure.
My heart was under lock and key,
but somehow it got unhitched.
I never thought my heart could be had.
But now I'm caught and I'm kinda glad to be,
to be bewitched!
Bewitched! Bewitched!
My heart was under lock and key,
but somehow it got unhitched.
I never thought my heart could be had.
But now I'm caught and I'm kinda glad
that you, you do
that crazy voodoo
and I'm bewitched by you!

Steve was doing his best 'old blue eyes' imitation, but he had the pipes to pull it off! Learning that version was buried until the movie came out is not a HUGE surprise and I'll bet the Chairman of the Board himself might have had something to do with that. No matter - Steve & Eydie were Sinatra acolytes, so no harm done. Love this version and wow, lots of making out here that we NEVER saw on the show!!! Lip locks like these were not the norm for 'family shows' in the 60s. Liked seeing them here though! Thanks Ned Nickerson for this gem. Has caused many to smile and remember

So I grew up on Jim Morrison and Edgar Winter, both smooth and convincing crooners as well as screaming rockers...and I just cannot take how good this guy's voice sounds. I keep replaying over and over. Come to think of it either Morrison or Winter singing about their main squeeze would've nailed this song. Yes it's like Sinatra but they are like each other. Both really really good.

The producer William Asher (Liz' husband) originally wanted to use the Steve Lawrence version of Bewitched for the shows theme however Steve did not get the song to Asher on time so they went with the instrumental version. I think if they would this version for the theme song it would have thrown Steve Lawrence into becoming one of the most popular singers of all time---he could have had a number one single with the theme song of one of the most popular television shows. A show which ran 8 seasons .............can you imagine how this would have increased Steve Lawrence's career. (not saying that he had a bad career---just saying it would have increased his popularity) because he would have been known for singing the theme song to one of the most popular television shows on TV in the 1960's

@BlueHeavenBound As noted elsewhere, Serena was Samantha's "identical twin" cousin. SABRINA was the name of the teenaged witch in the Archie comics and cartoons. But here's the twist. TV Samantha twitched her nose to use her magic. Sabrina the Teenaged Witch (in the Archie comics and cartoons) tugged on her ear to use magic. In the Bewitched movie Samantha/Isabel can twitch her nose - but she's tugs on her ear to use her magic!

They never colorized, the first season was B&W and after that it was color. No TV show colorized, it was color or black and white and that's it. B&W is so under rated. I watched nothing but Turner Classic Movies for about 2-3 years ( don't have cable anymore...Netflix is cheaper & recorded all the TCM anyway). The majority of the films being in B&W on TCM never bothered me once. I quickly grew to love B&W as much as color even though I always liked B&W it was only okay, but it's more than that!

People you would think would have advanced.. But, morally have fallen and technically advanced some... Hopefully better days ahead and the family values come back into play. A Mother's place and a Father's place are recognized again.

You are proof that class lives on. Good for you to remind us all that standards matter. Taking a few moments to share, as you did, lets others know that they are not alone in that perception. Cheers.

Ronald Freeman Meh....you just didn't see the crassness on tv back than. But it was there. There were slobs, assholes, perverts etc. back than you just didn't see it on tv and if you did it was mostly alluded to. The late 60's was when things started to change for tv...

@BlueHeavenBound @NedNickerson2010 Serena was Samantha's identical "twin" cousin. Sabrina was the teenaged witch who suddenly showed up in the Archie comics (and the Archies' TV show) when Bewitched was at the height of its popularity. Later, in the 90s, the TV show "Sabrina the Teenaged Witch" took the Sabrina character and put her in an"updated" setting - even her witch aunties got an extreme makeover.
