LOL, I've actually sat and talked with Steve a few different times, one time on his tour bus, one time backstage in Chicago (we talked about baseball). He is a really nice guy but he is a natural talker. But as a songwriter, he's a storyteller and with the lives he's led, he's got a lot of interesting stories to tell. Like it is for anyone, details might be fuzzy or out of proportion, but they're still good stories. For a guy without much formal education, he is extremely smart and well read. And don't forget, he was successful at a young age, so he's constantly asked the same questions and has to deal with obnoxious fans all the time. I've seen him over 30 times and I've never seen him be less than gracious to people.

Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed this. Honest, open. raw. I believe they all were so lucky to have each other. To have people who care enough to cry when you pass is a good thing. I enjoyed all 4 songs equally as well as the story.

❤❤❤❤❤❤. Wow. Amazing stuff. I've never heard this interview. So many good stories. We knew Guy and Suzanna in Houston, in the 60's when I was little. My dad and Mom were in touch with Guy off and on throughout life. Ad an adult, I only got to see Guy a few times. I have always had such a great soft spot in my heart for Guy. This was a treasure to hear!

I Love Steve and have seen him about 12 times and met him 4 times and as cool as he is David Allan Coe blew them all away when I seen him live in NJ about 2003. He was due onstage around 9pm his band including his son on lead were still onstage playing at 11.45 pm playing in Coes absence they were quite noticeably pissed off. Anyway Coe stumbles onstage just after midnight drinking a bottle of Jack with his confederate flag guitar around his neck and said this is for the bitch mother of my children who took all my money stole my house and kids then went straight into a medley of songs starting with Lucille (Kenny Rogers) now that is outlaw.

What a great bunch of stories! Yeara ago, I heard a song on one of Steve's live albums and the track bleeds over into his into for the song Brown and Root. I couldn't find a copy to listen to (either Earles' and Crowell's version). I sorta forgot about it until today. My grandfather's first big job wqs with Brown and Root after they settled down in Houston in the early 50's. He was hire on as an engineer, so I think he made pretty decent money. Cool, nonetheless.

Then there were two, most of my heroes are ghosts but, I've got two left, when I was growing up there was no one cooler than Roky Erickson and the 13th floor elevators being from Austin but I liked these older eastside cats and even though they weren't what my generation was into, I knew that Guy ,Steve townes, and Rodney and Susanna, were the real deal, and now it's 40 years later rmany have come and gone but as far as standing the.test of time my hometown heroes are still hard to beat! beautifully put! that phrase, most of my heroes are ghosts, is a classic and someone should write a song around it. And I'm with you, no one was cooler than Roky Erickson. So sad that he passed away at the end of last month. So many amazing musicians are dying. That's the only down side to have been around in those days, is that those days are gone. Makes me feel old.

I hate it when someone ruins a good story with the facts. I interviewed Steve some years back and I have to say he is an interviewer's dream. He just talks and you keep the tape running. If you see or read enough interviews, you will hear the same stories again, but he's a smart guy and I'll listen to him over and over. And I'll go see him any time he plays near me.
