StereoTypes - Racial Profiling and Guns

Stop and Frisk has been defended by the NYPD, saying it is an effective way of getting illegal guns off the streets. We talk about this controversial policy and gun control in general in this week's episode of StereoTypes, shot months before the incident at Sandy Hook Elementary. The Nation is in mourning and now more than ever it's important to explore these topics in light of the recent tragedy. We want to know your thoughts on the issues raised in this episode, please comment below to keep the conversation going. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and their families.

Slavery is illegal in the US with one exception: prison. Where black and brown men and women are being arrested at extremely high rates in comparison to whites. You can't say there is no connection to that

"If we make guns illegal, only the criminals will have guns" Couldn't agree more. I think we've learned enough from the ongoing, perpetual failure that is the war on drugs. Banning something won't make the problem go away, it only makes it worse.

A gun is an inanimate object. It is not capable of moving or firing on its own. When I look at the news, I don't see the headline saying, "Gun opens fire on 10 people." Guns aren't the issue here, it is the people who use them and I believe their needs to be stricter laws.

I'm an Asian American dude and I used to wear hoodies around my neighborhood but the cops would stop and frisk me because I'm not a harmless white person in a hoodie, as messed up as that sounds, its true to my experiences. I wish they could see something beyond that, but it has happened more than once for me and my friends and it just leaves you feeling degraded and of lesser value than those in better off neighborhoods.

I'm black, I'm 40 yrs old, and by no means am I a thug or a gangster. I've encountered the police on more than one occasion and was let go and not frisked each time because of how I carry myself. They were looking for thugs, and the found me...I'm a true disappointment to stop & frisk in their eyes.

This happened to me and my black friends when we would just walk down the street, cops would pull over to the corner and stop and frisk us for no reason whatsoever, they don't even say a word. I remember the first time I got stopped with my black friend during high school, hes a tall skinny dude with dreads and he just automatically put his hands on the hood of their car and didn't say anything, I was so confused, now I'm used to it. I'm Asian too by the way and we don't do anything illegal.

Do bones lie? Renowned Australian archeologist and anatomist, Raymond Dart, said that the earliest skeletal evidence of Ancient Egypt confirmed a Nordic population. The Ancient Egyptian civilization was mainly Mediterranean White, until the Nubian pharoah period of its final days. As I said, Prof. Raymond Dart said the earliest skeletal evidence indicated a Nordic population. And Arthur Kemp's books are a mixed bag, but his recent "Children of Ra" (google details) is quite good on this.

Exactly. It largely boils down to the examples that are set nationally, culturally, etc. and etc. Kids are told killing is a crime, yet America, and many other countries for that matter, go around killing people. A lot of it is circumstantial, too, I think.

I pray that we can get it right someday. *Who fears retaliation? Only those who knowingly do wrong. This same fear drives policy/laws such as stop and frisk. *Hip hop, is problematic but not the problem. Voiced, the people will find a way. Because of where I go to school, an upper-class predominately white school, I have a fair amount of rich friends. I go over to their houses often and we hang out we usually walk around the neighborhood. So many of his neighbors stare at me because I'm black. I know that they do. I feel like it's their way of telling me "You don't belong here." without saying anything.

That is not completely true. I have purchased 3 guns from gun shows and I have paper work and background checks performed on me on all 3. In fact when i purchased the first 2 guns from the gun show i had to wait 5 days before i could pick them up because i did not have a concealed weapon permit. You still have to do a FBI background check and file paper work at a gun show. People say that you can get a gun from a gun show without any background check because there are sometimes private sellers.

In fact, Haiti's a good example of the law of entropy. A fundamental law of Nature which applies to the historical process. t tells us that if we have a highly developed civilization in one part of the world and a jungle society in another part of the world, and we place those two societies in contact and let the inhabitants of the jungle society take a hand in the running of things, the civilization which used to be highly developed will soon take on the characteristics of the jungle society.

our prison system juvenile and adult system is a social experiment to a certain degree, i agree that some people need to be locked away and delt with in another way , but at the same time , for those you plan on sending back to the streets in 2 to 4 years , dont torture them and hurt them and make them aggressive and ignorant and then release them to the streets to see how they will adapt and over come , thats a experiment, and the reason also why most that offend and get incarcerated will re offend

Who do we have to blame about stereotypes but ourselves? We hate being stereotyped by our race and color yet we have a bunch of people living out those stereotypes that makes us look bad. We gotta fix ourselves so we get others to stop looking at us in a bad way. regardless of color or race.

In my state Florida if you have a concealed weapon permit you can pick your gun up the same day but you still have to pass the FBI background check and some other paperwork. And no it isn't easy to get this permit and it is impossible if you are a felon or have a criminal record, a domestic violence charge, a restraining order or a history of mental illness. The guns that the kid had in the Connecticut shooting were obtained illegally meaning that he broke the law to get them.

You are right, it's hard to break stereotypes when so many people are enforcing them with the way they act. One thing I'd like to note is in the context of racial profiling, stereotyping is mainly done against Minorities. White people aren't perfect, and they do a fair share of messed up and crazy stuff, but what negative stereotypes are ever held against them that would ever effect the perceptions of them or possibly hinder their opportunities in the workforce?

rap is one of the most popular genres in this country. It is listened to by millions. From upper middle class kids to kids in the hood.
