Stepping Stones - Unique Lava Formations, Black Point, Western Australia

The Stepping Stones can be found in D'Entrecasteaux National Park at Stepping Stones beach, Black Point with Pemberton being the closest nearby town. The track leading to Black Point is sandy and a high clearance 4WD would be required to get to Black Point. Once there the vista of the beach opens before you and a short walking track allows access the Stepping Stones. Once you arrive at the car park, there is a shelter and steps down to the beach. The two nearby camping areas of Humpback Hollow & Seal Cove gives a pleasant camping experience for those that may wish to stay in the area.
The Stepping Stones of Black Point were created a mere 135 million years ago. The Gondwanan continent was breaking up as volcanic lava oozed from the Darling Scarp region near Perth down and out into the Southern Ocean. The lava cooled at the ocean and during this process it shrunk and cracked creating hexagonal columns that were perpendicular to the surface. These became known as the "Stepping Stones". Today the Southern Ocean is slowly (in geological terms) eroding the Stepping Stones away.
Standing facing the Southern Ocean, you can see the black basalt stones on the shore as the waves recede. The Southern Ocean was ferociously pounding the basalt Stepping Stones on the day we were there and it's easy to see how they are slowly being eroded way. If you look to the right along the coast you can make out the tall basalt column which give Black point its name. On a calm day you can walk from the Stepping Stones to the Basalt Columns along the beach.

Great footage of our rugged southern coastline and for the explanation of how the Stepping Stones came to be. Thanks
