Stephens Design Pickups - How To Strip Braided Shield Wire

Музыка

I don't think anyone has done a video like this, many of my customers know how to solder but have never dealt with the braided shield wire I grew up with as a kid. Here I show the modern wire stripper method and the method I used as a kid in the 60's. Takes a little practice but isn't hard to do. The stripper I used is a different model name now, you can find it here:

I found this vid because I wasn't sure the "right" way of working with shielded cable for my input jack in my Strat. You are a genius sir. No magic, no black box, no secrets, just plain and simple. Based on this vid I am now a subscriber and can't wait to see what else you have. Many thanks

The nail method worked like a charm for a wire where I needed to keep the braid, thank you!

Does that method dull the cutting edge of the wire stripper?

Hi. I was wondering. . . I'm changing a single wire neck humbucker pickup on my archtop. Since it's so tricky to get to the pot, I was wondering whether one can cut the old pickup wire close to the pickup and simply solder the new pickup wire there. Solder the black inner wire, solder the braided coverings of both wires, and tape it all with electrical tape. Watching videos, it looks like this works-at least for those who say so.

Yes you can do that if its not a vintage guitar and pickup. For My Les Pauls thats how I change pickups quickly, is that the pickups have short leads so I can swap them at the routs and not have to get into the control cavity.

Thanks for the reply, it's good to know. I actually ended up doing that, in a way, since when I removed the bridge pickup to see better what's going on with the wires, I saw that the neck pickup's wire had been soldered to an older wire going to the pot, which was done like that-the inner wires soldered and the old wire ground soldered to the braided covering. Out of curiosity, why do write "if its not a vintage guitar and pickup" ?

great video, but I have only one question: why do you trim the excess of the braid when soldering it to the back of a pot? can't you use the excess to ground it?

  • @SDPickups

I just copy what Gibson did back then. they probably just pulled the braid back and soldered them that way. My way is just cleaner and easier to do.

May be a stupid question, but would it be ok to solder the extra braided shielding wire to the back of pot for ground, instead of cutting it off? or does it matter if you ground via the main braided lead, instead of the extra braided piece? Just curious.

Like the originals I strip the braid right before the solder lug on the pot. The end of the braid is then just soldered straight to the back of the pot. You can see this in part two of my harness building video : kzread.info/dash/bejne/YoaZ2dikj8SzoLA.html

Can you use this type of wire on a phase switch push pull?

  • @SDPickups

    @SDPickups

I really don't know. I've found that push pull switches are also tone killers, so I stay away from them.

@@SDPickups I've managed it, so they do work. I was having problems getting the circuit to work properly, turns out the pickup itself was shorting out when I put the case on. (P90 pickup).

@@SDPickups In what way does a push pull affect tone? I'm quite new to this, I haven't heard that before.

I have to solder a new lead to the P90 that someone cut out of the guitar to ensure it can reach the lugs for the pickup. Wish you had a video for that!

I should do a video on that, Stew Mac has a video on how to splice braided wire but its very poorly done and confusing, I finally figured out how to do it and their video wasn't very good.

Is it possible to just make the braid a separate wire? Like 4:12 but longer, starting from the root of the wire

Yes, you can use a nail to open some of the braid then pull the black core wire through as a seperate wire.
