Many commenters here have issues with the audience seeming bored, so I'll clarify a bit. Before Stephen spoke, both his wife and son read passages from their own lit for nearly an hour - and neither of them are good readers. Additionally, this is obviously a high school crowd. When I was in high school, I only had a couple friends who read Stephen King. It's absurd to expect that even 10% of a random crowd of teenagers care about Stephen King. However, my biggest gripe is that most of you are wearing blinders to the students who are obviously incredibly excited. Considering how few friends I had in high school that were interested in Stephen King, it was actually refreshing to see so many in this crowd holding on to his every word. It's also incredibly unfortunate that, compared to other Stephen King talks online, so many of you have absolutely nothing to add beside comments belittling high schoolers for not being more interested in an author you like. Some of my best friends only read 'high-literature' in high school and scoffed at 'genre writers' or 'pop authors' like Stephen King and insulted my tastes, though I understand plainly that tastes are of course subjective. Stephen King is obviously a master of horror lit, but I don't think it's necessary to comment on the audience - especially when you have nothing else of interest to add. Great post. I can understand people being annoyed by the boredom (I am mostly just listening to the interview so far and haven't noticed the audience much), but you defend the situation well and make a strong case against criticizing the crowd. Also, I've been watching a lot of writer/thinker interviews lately (I just finished Infinite Jest, so I've been plowing through DFW interviews/content), and I noticed that many of the videos I've been enjoying are on your channel. Feels great to find intellectually stimulating content and to know that others appreciate it as well :) thanks, friend!

In some ways this was one of the best events Stephen King ever did. The audience wasn't the usual fan crowd, who cheer and clap whenever King mentions one of his books. This was a tough crowd who had to be won over and I think in the end they were. Let's not forget that Stephen taught in high school for two years after graduating from the University of Maine, so he knows his way around kids who are bored and/or disinterested in literature. Nevertheless some of the questions were better than the usual "what scares you?" or the "who is your favorite character?" questions he is asked all the time. He wasn't in his usual comfort zone and it made him/them work harder to win the crowd. And in my opinion they did with spades. I myself really enjoyed listening to them, because they said many interesting engaging answers and had some very good thoughts. Great video, well worth watching.

I think they are probably not readers, and someone thought if anything is going to appeal and encourage them to pick up a book, it's the guy who wrote some of the horror movies that they love. Kids don't read for pleasure as much as they used to, it's a shame.

@@loud6037 that’s a sweeping generalization, one that’s unfortunately rooted in some truth. I think reading is still extremely important, particularly to young people, based on what I see at my local library. A limited and narrow experience, but one nonetheless. I’m in my mid-to-late twenties, let me preface everything I say with that much. Not everyone takes to it the same. I can attest to that. Growing up, I didn’t have the attention span or focus for reading or writing, even though I enjoyed both. Now that I’m older, about once I entered my twenties, I finally had it in me to commit to novels without issue. What you’re describing, I think it’s similar to what I dealt with growing up, only worsened by the increasing advent of technology. Kids have a lot of other things drawing their attention, for better or for worse, and their information intake is constant. More so than yours or even mine. Sometimes, that leaves little room for focus, and reading doesn’t provide the same stimuli as other things. My guess and my hope, is that those kids are similar to me, and many of them take to it when they grow up a bit. When you’re older, your brain has changed, your attitudes have changed. I would bet that, given the opportunity and the interest, many kids who aren’t reading now - they will in time.

That part reminds me of a scene in the movie "Sideways". One of the protagonists is an english teacher, who writes a novel and wants to publish it. Early in the movie he meets a guy, who expresses THIS very attitude towards fiction, that Mrs. King is deconstructing here: He didn't understand, why he should read something, that somebody else just made up. The author/teacher-character only looks baffled and answers something like: "Well, that's ... certainly an interesting opinion."

(And I'd also say she likely in essence IS a Librarian in addition to being an Author; she knows good fiction aside from her own [she rescued Carrie from the garbage!], I agree there's more Truth in "Fiction" than Non-Fiction too often, and if she worked in a Library long & deeply enough as a Librarian's Assistant, she likely has the requisite know-how & insights. Not to make light of a Master's degree, but she seems very bright & knowledgeable).

That's called "kids at school", maybe you went to one some decades ago. And don't tell me the kids in your time were interested in anything. How do you expect zoomers to be interested in Stephen King? His golden years are over and his most successful novel is probably 11/22/63 which is fairly recent. All others you may say are good, and yeah, but we are die-hard Stephen king fans, you just eat that ship up. Truth is, I personally haven't found a book that really gripped since the Dark Tower, and his classics like It, The Shining, Misery, Salem, Pet Sematery were from so long ago. His movie adaptations as of recent aren't anything to go crazy too especially if you are into horror movies. What i'm saying is, there is literally no reason for a teenager born after the 2000s to be remotely interested in a writer they probably were never exposed to.

People in these comments are being ridiculous. As if King's never had to deal with an audience of low-energy teenagers before. The man was a teacher for years. Besides, just because they weren't all staring at him with stars in their eyes doesn't mean they weren't listening.

I loved this. Thank you for posting. I have been a fan of Stephen King for as long as I can remember. One of my dreams in life is to one day meet him. There is one thing I would like to talk to him about though and that's killing off Larry Underwood in The Stand. lol While reading The Stand I loved how Larry grew and changed and then *boom* and he was gone. I cried and couldn't finish reading the book until a few months later. I do get connected with characters and Larry Underwood was a character that could have flourished. As for the audience they did look unappreciative and bored. I saw some roll their eyes, look around instead of paying attention and yawning. I would have been in the front seat taking in every word. It's not because they are from another generation as the young man's favourite movie was "IT" and he appeared to be around the same age as the other students. It's so wrong for people to label the audience bored because of their skin colour. They are *people*!!! The only race is the human race.

The first time I saw Stephen King in person (at a distance) I cried. He had been such a huge part of my life for 25+ years at the time that seeing the reality of him was overwhelming. I cannot understand the apathy I'm seeing here. I understand that SK isn't for everyone, but I'm having a hard time understanding why he is scheduled to address an audience that seems less than interested in his feedback.

The discussion is a little bit above the kids' heads, but that's okay. They'll learn from it anyway. Part of it is shyness too. I like some of the questions that are a little bit nervy. They're not necessarily very sophisticated questions, but it's kind of nice those questions get asked sometimes. I fondly remember when I was in high school, when Carrie first came out and everybody was passing it around like a dirty secret!

You're still very young, and don't think about it. "Seize the day" and all that, don't waste time (you're right, a decade goes by way too fast...) but if you dwell on how fast it goes you'll just be depressing yourself over nothing. All just numbers. If your life was horrible it'd go so much slower, and you don't want that for sure! I admit I wish I could go back a decade or two --- but that's pointless. "Enjoy and make the best of each day." Eat healthy, drink a lot of water, walk/exercise, get sunlight ---- and you'll probably live a long, happy life!

48:57 Why did Tabitha exchange the word desire for fantasy? The young women did not use that word in her question. Wow. Talk about power packed. Ouch! I could feel Stevens response before the chuckle. Not a chuckle but that air escape thing passed off as an acknowledgement of something. Is the word fantasy in this context revealing of the style of desire present in the life of long term matrimony ? Desire becomes something external to the marriage. Fantasy. Becomes..........yah right. Forget I said anything.

He was almost well spoken. Once he mentioned that people who don't read might find a job in the Army he lost me. I think he misspoke and he didn't mean it because he doesn't really know. That was an ignorant, biased comment. 37:12. I served for 17 years. I even read one of his books (From a Buick 8, honestly a disappointing book from his normal standard) while I was in Iraq. I was an avid reader growing up. I, in fact, read a lot of King's work. I hope that watchers take the advice they need and don't see all of his words as the gospel. He's human like all of us. ...I just noticed that this was filmed April 2008. That is exactly when I was in Iraq (specifically Sep 07-Dec 08). That's funny to me.

THANK YOU, STEPHEN KING!!!! He likes what he does. YAAAAY!!! So he won't be slagging off series characters, wishing he'd never created them. Sadly, his poor mom was ripped off. See, christie didn't like what she did. She did it for EGO adulation. In the case of the *DETESTABLE* Hercule Poirot, christie wanted to be mentioned in the same breath with Arthur Conan Doyle, so she basically lifted Holmes, remodeled him, with a different background, etc,..and named him Poirot. Then spent the rest of the man's life wishing she'd never created him. NO agatha christie novel will EVER get through the front door in my home. Stephen King, on the other hand, is always welcome.
