His use of Gettysburg as an illustration of contingency reminds me of a quote of Churchill, which goes something like “the old wars were decided more by their episodes than their tendencies, while modern wars are decided more by their tendencies than by their episodes”.

The brightest stars burn out far too soon, but produce the most light. I wish Gould was still with us. The debates in evolutionary biology and popular science are simply far less interesting without his unique point of view.
