Part 2: • Stephanie Mills: I Don...
In this clip, Stephanie Mills talked about her upbringing in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn and how she got an early start in entertainment by performing at the Apollo and on Broadway. She also recalled not wanting to audition for The Wiz out of fear of rejection but eventually landed the role as a 17-year-old. According to Stephanie, she initially ended up landing the leading role as Dorothy but explained the reason why she wasn't cast as Dorothy in the live action version is because Diana Ross wanted the role. From there, Stephanie and Shawn Prez engage in a friendly debate about Diana Ross and Beyonce. Stephanie argues that Diana Ross represents royalty, R&B and class personified while Beyonce is from a different generation that is more associate with hip-hop.

Stephanie Dorthea Mills (born March 22, 1957) is an American singer and songwriter. She rose to stardom as "Dorothy" in the original seven-time Tony Award winning Broadway run of the musical The Wiz from 1974 to 1979. The song "Home" from the show later became a Number 1 U.S. R&B hit and her signature song. During the 1980s, she had five Number 1 R&B hits, including "Home", "I Have Learned to Respect the Power of Love", "I Feel Good All Over", "(You're Puttin') A Rush on Me" and "Something in the Way (You Make Me Feel)". She won a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her song "Never Knew Love Like This Before" in 1981. Her albums What Cha Gonna Do with My Lovin, Sweet Sensation and Stephanie went gold or platinum, all through 20th Century Fox Records. Source Wikipedia

she is not underrated, she peaked by 1988 and she is a Grammy winner.. She had her moments.. The mere fact that her legacy is mostly filled with talk of her being in The Wiz, takes away from her peak years in the 1980s when she was a huge R&B star.. Also, she keeps contradicting herself in interviews, she complains that she wasn't able to crossover into pop but yet she says she only wanted to do R&B anyway.. She claims that record companies only wanted White artists to do R&B.. Outside of The Wiz, she doesn't have much to tell about her story unless she is truthful with herself. Music styles were changing in the early 1980s and Stephanie's sound did not change with the times, there was also a lot of competition with the introduction of Whitney Houston and Anita Baker among others. Truthfully, by 1985, Stephanie's career was pretty much over.

@@awesome1990s I agree.. All these people in the comments are praising her but where were they when she needed them? She released two albums in the 1980s that bombed. She released a pop song that the Black community and Black radio did not support. She needed her people when the industry was on Whitney's, Anita's & Karen White's bandwagon.. In the mid to late 1980s the market became over saturated with Black female artists and many crossed over and that when Stephanie got lost but she was able to score a #1 R&B hit in 1988. Yes, Stephanie even tried being a dance performer.. There was Pebbles, Vanessa Williams, Karen White, Jody Watley, Shanice, Stacy Lattisaw, Melissa Morgan, Shannon, Anita Baker, Cherelle, Janet Jackson, LaToya Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Rebe Jackson, Natalie Cole, Salt n Pepa, the Whitney Houston Clones and a few White chicks that could sing R&B like Sheena Easton. Also, Paula Abdul was putting out her debut album around that time. Man, thats when the competition was big!

Honestly, it really doesn’t matter that Stephanie wasn’t in the Hollywood adaptation of The Wiz. Steph did it on Broadway for 5yrs and we have the recordings too. Diana Ross wanted to do it badly because she felt a strong connection to it and felt as an artist; a strong message to share. I do love the idea that she was an adult trying to find herself again because she lost alignment with herself. That’s real and I respect her for trying. She sang in that movie in a way many never heard her sing before. It’s the underdog in Diana Ross that makes her Be A Lion and Home so appealing to me. But of course Stephanie Mills slayed those songs, of course. But I also love Diana’s take. Diana was a mega star back then.

My mom took my siblings and I to see “The Wiz” on Broadway specifically because she wanted to see Stephanie Mills. Of course the night we went she was not performing and her understudy filled in. I just recall the audience yelling “Stephanie who?” when her understudy sang. I had no idea who Stephanie Mills was at the time. Didn’t hear her music until long after. I understood why my mom wanted to see her.

@@mamadouaziza2536 I will say this what God has for you it is for you, Diana had the power to move movie producers then she should have let Stephanie play Dorothy and Diana play Glinda, also looking at the history of the Wiz God has blessed Stephanie Mills twice in one lifetime with the original run , inspite of the movie and blessed her all most what 30 years later in the wiz live at this point you can’t tell me you can have wiz with out Stephanie mills , and the fact God pretty much acted according with Diana Ross film career , you can’t take somebody else destiny , also If they didn’t make a big scale movie a play on film with what budget they did have would be find

@@newcreature222 The role in the movie was never offered to Stephanie Mills... A lot of Broadway performers never make it into the movie version of the play that they were in.. The Wiz was never going to be made by Universal Studios unless Diana Ross was attached. Julie Andrews was axed for My Fair Lady in favor of Audrey Hepburn because Audrey was a huge star at that time. Julie was just a Broadway actress. Stephanie Mills should be glad she wasn't in The Wiz because the film was poorly received by critics and the public, not because of Diana Ross, but because it wasn't a good movie, they should have hired a director who was use to directing musicals instead of hiring Sidney Lumet, who was a director of drama/action movies. Grease the movie came out the same year as The Wiz and Grease was a huge hit because it was led by two huge stars. If John Travolta and Olivia Newton John weren't cast in Grease, the movie would most likely have bombed. You have to have a huge star to front a big movie such as The Wiz and Stephanie wasn't a star in Hollywood..

@@newcreature222 Diana Ross' film career was short because no one in Hollywood wanted to work with her and Motown because of they knew it would be a 'Diana Ross' movie and they would be in the shadows.. A lot of people refused to work with Barbra Streisand because of the same reason, Robert Redford was very reluctant to work with Barbra because he assumed he would get lost in the movie.. After The Wiz, Diana Ross was still in great demand as an actress but she turned down anything that required her to sing, she was the original actress for the movie The Bodyguard in 1980 with Ryan O'Neal.. Because Diana turned it down, the movie just sat for 11 years until Kevin Costner was attached and he hired Whitney Houston.. Also, Diana Ross has stated that she herself did not like spending time on movie sets just waiting around until she was called on set, she said she could be spending that time at home with her kids.
