Welcome to my channel, I am feeling much better and able to get out and shoot for you all. I have massively taken a step up in my filming and my photography. I realised that it is an important passion of mine which I want to continue doing and to see grow and develop whilst on my maternity. During this video I talk about the new Canon R5, why I chose it and how to compose forest photographs using the mirrorless camera. As a bonus is that I have included some useful tips I use in the field to get the best forest compositions for Landscape Photography. Let me know if you enjoyed this style of content and if you want to see more of it? Had great fun getting lost in the forest with this new camera and hope you were able to escape the daily grind with me. Expect more content soon!

    I agree 100% after 18 years as a pro photographer. I've never seen anybody take better photos after buying a new camera. Not even once. However, it is fun and can motivate you to get out and shoot more and that is what helps one improve their craft.

    The R5 is the best camera I have ever owned. It doesnt make me a better photographer but it gives me more leeway to be abetter photographer! The user interface is fantastic… using the articulated screen off tripod isgreat for macro and close up…. The dynamic range is the best plus point for sure as allows meto get most shots now in one shot rather than exposure blending bracketed shots! Anything lessening post processing is welcome!

    I generally agree, a new camera won't automatically improve my photos. Of course, a working camera is always a big improvement over a broken one. For landscape work, once you have a camera and a good lens, the best photographic hardware investment you can make is a rock steady tripod & head.

    Awesome new camera! I too have recently upgraded, but I went for the 7D mark ii. I also purchased the 24-105 f/4 L. I think that is a similar lens to yours. Nice video and great to see you doing well. Read your blog as well and agree to your points. I think the R5 is an excellent choice for you. I would say that better gear doesn't make you a better photographer. What does? Getting out, enjoy what you do, shoot, fail, and learn from your failures. We sometimes forget that as we are flooded with videos and information... On the other hand some of the features of new cameras may help us do things we couldn't do before (for example, stabilization and dynamic range improvements). Looking forward to more videos with the new setup!

    Sorry about your 5D but congrats on your R5. I went mirrorless for a few years but last summer I went back to DSLRs daily because of my collection of native lenses, the ergonomics and battery life differences. Fortunately the high res DSLR I am using is still being produced for another two years, so for the near future I am set with what I have, and if I ever decide to go back to mirrorless for landscapes or other detailed work it would most definitely be with a medium format. Like you said, none of these changes makes me a better photographer but they do keep me shooting as long as we notice that these are merely different tools of the trade.

    @@SuzannahMary The decision was mainly based on cost effectiveness, knowing my gear, how to get the best out of them and realizing my photography doesn't really change. Perhaps this for you is a quality and ergonomic boost and gets you motivated which is a great thing as long as you stay creative, and that's what really counts in the long run. I for one love what you do and can't wait to see what more you will create.

  • @mossgatherer_

    @mossgatherer_

    10 ай бұрын

    @@SuzannahMary Which adapter are you using? The Canon OEM ones are made to factor in the difference in distance from the sense between EF and RF so it should be pretty much the same, but worth looking into! At first the battery life made me pull my hair out (one battery could get me 1-2 days of even the most arduous shooting and now I carry 5 with me...) but the previewing capabilities and the sheer power, the R5/R6 are fantastic cameras. I spent the first two months with it saying I hated it though. One suggestion, sorry if it's obvious - do try the different focus priority modes. Yesterday I realised I'd left mine on animal/bird mode and it was like shooting with a potato. There are so many settings on this camera that in two years I feel like I'm just scraping the surface!

    I 100% agree with you. Upgrading does not make you a better photographer per se, but having a camera that ultimately improves your workflow increases your chances of capturing images you probably would not have oreviously. I upgraded from a Canon 5 III to the R5, via the R, recently and have definitely found that my ability to capture good quality images has improved.

    I love my R5. I use it mostly for wildlife. One reason I went with the R5 when I upgraded from my 6D MKII is that for $99 I could buy the Canon adaptor and use my old lenses. That helps soften the blow of a new camera a lot. I have had no issues using my older EF lenses on my RF bodies, I have the R7 too. I noticed you are using an adaptor too. Do these camera make me a better photographer, no. But they do allow me to capture many more images that are keepers. They shoot a lot faster and they focus a lot faster, and they focus on the eye. I think you are going to enjoy your R5.

However, occasionally we have to replace broken gear so if funds allow why wouldn't we opt for the highest spec available. Cameras don't last forever, unfortunately. With cameras, if I want to get a new one I don't buy it thinking it's going to make me better. I buy a camera (especially digital cameras) to do a job and I look for the specs that'll get that job done. I like printing my work, so I go for cameras with a good pixel count. Although, you'd be surprised at what you can get out of even older cameras with more limited pixel counts. The only way to become a better photographer is with lots of practice and experience.
