Great Beginner Project! Step-by-Step Tutorial on How to Crochet a Simple Whale: Easy Amigurumi Whale

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

**Tutorial to turn this whale into a narwhal: • How to Make a Crochet ... **
Whale, whale, whale...what do we have here! Here's another great beginner plushie to start with! Let me show you how to make a simple whale! Here's the free written pattern: www.themaryjay.com/free-patte...
It only uses your basic amigurumi skills, so it's a great project to start with! However, while I do go over every stitch and all the skills, it's helpful to already be familiar with your basic crochet skills:
-Magic Ring (Magic Circle)
-Single Crochet
-Increase
-Decrease
If you need more help with any of the above, here are some tutorials:
- Slow Magic Circle Tutorial: • Slow & Super Detailed ...
-5 must-know beginner skills (covers all the skills above except DC Cluster/Bobble Stitch): • 5 Must-Know Beginner A...
Also to keep the video from running too long, I start off slower at the beginning and go over each skill, but speed up towards the middle and end when the skills/stitches become repetitive. Please feel free to pause or adjust the playback speed to be faster or slower based your own skill level and preference.
This Tutorial Covers:
-Recommended Materials
*fabric scissors
*yarn needle
*stitch markers
*polyester fiber fill
*6.5 mm hook
*#6 super bulky blanket yarn
*18 mm safety eyes (*Safety eyes can be CHOKING HAZARDS. They are NOT recommended for plushies made for young children etc*)
-How to Crochet the Body
-How to Crochet the Tail Pieces
-How to Crochet the Fins
-Assembly (sewing on pieces)
Where to Get the Materials:
You can find most of these items on my Amazon Storefront: www.amazon.com/shop/influence...
My Amazon Storefront is an affiliate link, which means I will earn a small commission if you use it to make a purchase. This is one way that helps support me and lets me continue to make free content for you.The materials listed are actual materials that I have used.
Here's where I get my yarn: (this is also an affiliate link that helps support me!)

    46:52 Hi I am having trouble when pulling the yarn to close my magic circle. Not sure what I am doing wrong . Can you please advise?

  • @themaryjay

    @themaryjay

    11 ай бұрын

    Hi, a few things that you can try is 1. make sure you're crocheting over BOTH strands of yarn for your single crochets. It won't close if it's only over one 2. Does it close before you add your stitches? If it doesn't, there's probably an issue with the circle itself. If it does, there are some types of yarn that just makes this harder. Some ways that help me is tightening the circle a little more before I add the stitches so I don't have to tighten it as much, making looser single crochets, and making sure I'm pulling the yarn horizontally to the circle instead of at a downward angle (which I like to do and usually works if the yarn isn't being frustrating). 3. If all else fails, work on your second round and then use the yarn tail (the short one) and sew up the opening. Hope this helps! :)

    Hi love this video!! If i use #7 bulk yarn would this tutorial work? (Im trying to use up left over yarn from a blanket) how would i figure out what size crochet hook to use?

  • @themaryjay

    @themaryjay

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes!! You should be able to use any yarn. Your whale may turn out bigger and a little differently though since yarn and hook size do change the look. I would suggest maybe adjusting the eye size accordingly and hook size really depends on what you like using the best but usually going 1-2.5mm sizes down from the suggested hook size on the label is a good start. Smaller sizes create less holes in your plushie but you don’t want to go too small where it becomes difficult to crochet. If you have a hook set, i would suggest trying out a few to see which you like the best :)

  • @themaryjay

    It's hard for me to say without seeing your work but usually extra stitches means you're accidentally increasing so instead of making one single crochet in every stitch, sometimes you're putting two in the same stitch. I would suggest just really carefully tracking each single crochet you're making and making sure that after you make one single crochet in a stitch, that you're putting the next single crochet in the next stitch instead of the same one again. A habit that I've picked up from when I first started crocheting and this would happen to me is I'll hold the second stitch with my fingers while I'm crocheting into the first stitch and it helps me keep track of the next stitch to put the single crochet in. Hope this helps!

    when i follow your tutorials i always follow them exactly, how come i always have one more or one less stitch then you? it's getting me confused because i made sure to follow you along all the way, this always happens at the beginning too!

  • @themaryjay

    @themaryjay

    Likely you’re accidentally putting in the next single crochet in the same stitch as before (if more) or you’re skipping a stitch in your own piece (if less). It’s pretty common for this to happen especially if you’re newer to crochet and used to happen to me all the time too until I got more familiar with reading the stitches. If you have extra in the magic circle at the very very beginning and you’re sure you put in the right amount, it may be that you accidentally counted the magic circle knot as a single crochet (since it can look like one sometimes).

    Does the circle tighten before you add the stitches? If it does, are you crocheting your single crochets over both strands of yarn in the magic circle? Crocheting over one strand of yarn is usually the main reason why the circle won't tighten. I've also had some issues in the past with certain yarn that just make the circle so hard to tighten. Usually I find closing the circle slightly before crocheting my stitches and also making sure I pull horizontally to the circle instead of at an angle helps! If all else fails, you can start on your second round and then use that extra string leftover from the magic circle to sew up the opening.

    If it's looking flat and you have 30 stitches more, you are increasing in places that you shouldn't be. Increasing refers to making more than one single crochet in the same stitch of the previous round. Make sure that you are only putting one single crochet in each stitch unless you are increasing in that stitch.

  • @themaryjay

    There’s a few reasons this can be. It can be because of variation in your tension where the magic circle/ first rounds is looser than the stitches in your following rounds and tends to happen more so with chunky yarn. In the past, I’ve found that a bigger hook can help or if you’re using a smaller hook, you can stretch out the top a little bit with your fingers if you notice it getting pointy (as long as your stitches are tight enough so it doesn’t create holes) to make it flatter.
