Tyler 'Mr. Trees' Trimble is back at UCSD's Roger's Community Garden (www.rcgucsd.com) and pruning their collection of dormant, stone fruit trees in their coastal, subtropical micro-climate of La Jolla. With tall Eucalyptus and interested students in the background, Tyler provides step-by-step instructions on how to prune your apricot trees!

Really looks like it has a great frame for production when all said and done. Great improvement 👍👌👏
Very good. I have been an arborist since the '80s. And I believe in Shigo. You ran through the basic list of good pruning and showed which buds to look for. And you covered my pet peeve: stubs. So I thank you. I am in the northeast corner of California (1a) at 40° north. Elevation 4,000' plus. Have you any supplemental ideas?
Very helpful. Good explanations! Thanks very much!
would be nice if you mentioned which month you are in....my apricot in north park is already showing buds by mid Dec....cannot get. a straight answer on whether to prune in Nov, Dec or later in SD thanks
As I am your subscriber number 300, I would like to Thank you for this video. You were very informative and gave us a bunch of options to choose from on how to properly prune our trees!
Great info! Thank you.
Hi! Love your pruner!!! What brand & where to locate???? Thank you!
I read that apricots fruit on 2 year old wood. Is this true?
thank you
What kind of pruners are you using???
Do you recommend protectin the freshly cut wood with anything like latex, etc.? What if pruning larger branches in a wet winter?

Felco 820 But anything that Falco makes is excellent.
Why are you pruning in the dormant period? Everything I have been reading is to prune apricots in July or August 6 weeks before rain.

J Thalin You prune all deciduous fruit trees in the winter. When they are sleeping. This way there is less stress for the tree and you can fix all the damage that occurred the year before and properly prepare the tree to fruit heavily for the upcoming season. You can do a summer pruning in late August early September in this area after the fruit has finished. This just makes your job easier for winter care and prepped the tree to make fruitwood at a lower level.

Yes that's what I keep thinking, I read everywhere (including rhs UK) that to prune stone fruits in summer to avoid silver leaf disease, then I go on KZread and all the vids are in winter 🤦♂️

@@mrtrees665 exactly. that is the big confusion for apricots, based on recommendations. if i prune a bunch right after harvest, i remove a bunch of leaves (energy). I tend to remove the tallest new shoots (4 month old) down from 20 ft to like 14 right after harvest to let some sun through for other plants. I feel that i should be doing a harsh prune in late winter where i get to 10" of fruit wood (9 month old to 2.5 year old) and remove the 3+ year old wood that is not really part of the core canopy or is begging to look diseased etc. Is this right? Should i fertilize after either the post harvest light prune or the late winter harsh prune session, or wait until late April? Note: San Jose CA area.

I'm in northern California that usually rains during dormant Winter. I was advised not to prune the apricot in wet Winter to avoid the cuts getting infected with diseases. So the option is to prune in late Fall, around October or November before the rain season.
also, with your thick So Cal accent slurring of consonants, i could not get the name of that trimmer you are using, might you put it in the notes, or enunciate clearly next time? thanks much...
There is a problem with you website

It’s down. Not cost effective for me to have it. Im all over other media platforms and such. If you have inquiries you can always email us-
Where are your safety gloves, as well always clean the base first, then shape.
not nearly enough explanation. when ppl know a lot they presume ppl listening know what theyre talkingabout. But we dont. You said step by step, which suggests far more explanation.
