Awesome , wife and kids are gone for a month, have a 66 413 from an RV, ran fine a million years ago.Garage too cold, a couple of my fine neighbors helped me bolt it to my stand .Will order a pizza and 6 pack (no pun intended) and begin to tear that beast apart .A month of bliss , thank you....

Your awesome finally someone doing things that are relatable I'm sick to death of watch people build hundred thousand dollar cars in million dollar shops, now working on your heads in the shower that's just good stuff

Let them know to be careful. Too much material removed on one cyl, means ALL cyls need same thing, so don't go too crazy on the first cyl. Also, try to stay away from the port floor. Not just because of the ramp, but some cyl heads don't have a thick deck,(less than 5/8), and it's also easy to enter water jackets, if too much material is removed. I can't stress this enough.....DO NOT GO CRAZY ON THE 1ST CYL!!! It's just natural to over do the 1st one. Do minimal on the 1st, repeat for the others, THEN GO BACK, and do more. Better safe than sorry. My first 12.5 to 1 wedge heads got destroyed because I didn't have this advice. Oh, and BE CAREFUL when gasket matching. Bump that bitch the wrong way, and they'll never seal, & you have just made an expensive, time consuming, BRICK. I hope this helps.

First things first, place a painters heavy drop-cloth in the tub. Better yet, use a friends garage (be certain to be a gracious guest) dunno why but I really feel like I needed to add that second point there. If you work in some one else's space clean yur shit up even when they tell you "don't bother" make the space that you are working in shine before you leave. You will always be welcome back because you are showing a level of respect for yur friend's shit.

That’s the first time UT has seen a shower in 10 years. Lol

A quick suggestion, stick a shopvac in the other end of the port it should get 90+%.

I did this on the cilinderhead of my dad's Ford OHC Pinto engine when i was 16. Now over 40y ago... It had a blown HG so the head had to come off anyway. So i took the chance to apply some tuning knowledge that i read in a British magazine called popular mechanics. On some 2valve/cil heads the valves are partly shrouded by the walls of the combustion chamber. Sometimes it really pays to DE-shroud them a bit by removing some of the wall of the combustion chamber. The effect is earlier and better intake /exhaust flow. I did this on the Pinto OHC head (hard work because the head was made of cast iron) and also on a Volvo B230 redblock head (a lot easier because the head was made of aluminium). I never told my dad about the Pinto head but after i had the HG installed and the car was back up and running he was very impressed by the way the engine performed. It was only a 72hp 1.6L but it ran like a 90hp 1.8L The same applies to I6, V6 or V8 engines, it's just more work. But the gains are bigger! The nice thing about mods like these are that you gain flow over the entire rev range, it raises the torque curve as well as the power curve without having to mess around with cams and cam gears. You would get even better results if you had a machine shop do a 3-angle back cut on the seats. That will greatly improve flow at low valve lift.

This makes me wanna pull the head's of my motors and give them a tickle. Great video 👍

That's a good idea, having a die grinder in the bathroom. Makes quick work of removing tartar from your teeth.

You really need an assortment of carbide burrs..... lots more power to be had.....

The upstairs neighbor sure has been running that vacuum cleaner for a while lol

Tony is a REAL, "Old School" Auto Mechanic" , with obvious decades of experience. Handling used engine parts, porting Cylinder Heads, bare-handed. NOT like some "Hollywood Technicians" who wear latex gloves, to install a new RADIO!

Thanks! I've done my own wrenching for 45 years, still learning tricks, any day we can learn something is a good day! we cant say women dont have a sense of humor, they normally marry it! If i even thought about doing something like this in my shower, I'd be wearing my ass as a hat! wow! Do have a few questions but will wait till the end as you may easily address them as this build goes on. Have been diehard mopar since high school, im 61 now, thats a long time! always enjoy making them go faster!

Ahahaahhh! I just spend the last three days cleaning up car parts in my bathtub! I´m wrenching on my van on the street right in front of my apartment block...

Just a suggestion, I use a cheapo shopvac to suck the dust out of the opposite end of the port. Keeps things cleaner and easier to see what I'm working on. It also helps to prevent inhaling the dust. Cheers !!

BEST video ever Tony, but you got me sleeping on the couch for a month. First, my engine stand chipped the bathtub porcelain and all the sandblasting ruined the bidet. Then I broke the medicine cabinet mirror when I took it down to roll my pushrods on. On the plus side, I ported my showerhead and it went from low-flow to mofo.

Did you guys see the Garage 54 video from yesterday? They made a clear oil pan and filmed the engine running. it was awesome to see how the oil runs through the engine, and what can happen if you have too little oil. The only bummer was they didn't take the car for a drive, but, who can blame them- they live in Siberia.

I can't believe I just found this channel. This dude is in the shower with goggles on porting heads with a harbor freight die grinder. This dude is literally the closest thing to a hero that I've found thus far in my life.

I rebuilt the auto tranny for my truck one time in my laundry room. Took parts to work and cleaned them and modified them on my lunch breaks. Laid a sheet of plywood across the washer and dryer and used it to assemble the tranny. Fun times, my girlfriend at the time was mortified. hahahaha.

I live ina townhouse, and well thus no garage.... lol for thew past 3-4 years ive been repairing my old Jeep wagoneers, mainly rust by grinding, cutting, and welding in the parking lot lol.. my neighbors hate me.. haha

Nice thing about the tub is there's towels and a curtain for cleanup. I rebuilt my datsun trans in the apartment kitchen and the bathtub served as my parts washer.

I do have a fiberglass repair kit for the chips you make in that tub. I’ve done plenty of them.

This series has inspired me to build a 383 engine block that I bought for cheap a year ago. I would love to see a conclusion to the series, so far the entire series have been incredibly educational. Being a young person in college with little money and having no back round in engine work these types of videos are the basically all I have to work with. If you ever do continue the series I would be great if you make a video on how to remove/install and an engine with out removing the transmission.

I just rebuilt the original 350 from my truck, with the GM 193 TBI heads. I only spent about two hours per head on the porting, but the castings were so much cleaner than what you're dealing with. I also used the Harbor Freight sanding cone set after the carbide bit. Fun stuff! One quick tip - the last time the urgent care clinic doctor removed metal from my eye, she recognized me from the previous time. I was wearing safety glasses, but now I wear face-fitting goggles.

I always plan for a full hour per cylinder for porting, plus disassembly, cleaning, inspection, valve job, guides, adjusting installed height, adjusting spring height, reassembly, misc. it's not hard to see why most people just buy aftermarket heads

What wife hasnt said at least once, "Move that engine block, so I can take a shower."?

I can think of 5 landlords right now who would mess their diaper thinking what's going down their plumbing they'll have to fix one day. That said, a series like this is nice to show just how expensive it is to build cheap. How many apartment dwellers are going to know which valve has the 40 degree seat, and what year had the 45 degree seat? How many project cars will sit in the community parking lot as someone tries to diagnose the broken exhaust spring. Its the nickel and dime stuff that grabs ya. You buy a head for cheap...but then you find out what the alternator bracket costs, and that the valve cover you got the great deal on has a different bolt pattern. That's where room to store comes in handy. But out there is someone who tossed together a ride, and they only take it two blocks to the cruise nite at Pep Boy's before the snow flies.

U can also buy indoor grow tents for pretty cheap. U can get a strong 4” inline fan around 150$ and ducting all from the same online hydroponic shop. Probably looking at 300$. U can vent 100% the fumes out the window and have a inclosed space to contain the mess. And u can smoke in a nonsmoking apartment while u work. Not to mention the reflective ability of the Mylar.

After thinking about it for a while I decided to go with stock valve springs, since the redline for the 318 was 5200 for a long time. When I get the valves back out of the heads, I'm gonna' clean up the ports just the way Tony showed here. I've always believed that building up a 318 is a holistic process- yeah you can get some good power by adding a bigger carb and better intake, headers and a bigger cam- but why not do a little more to help all those things out?

I think a vacuum could be running at they same time. Harbor Freight sells good ear protection too.

@@Bill_N_ATX I have not heard of hoppes no 9 before. I will have a look on a lesser well known search engine. Edit: Ah, gun lubricant / solvent. Unfortunately, we are not allowed guns in the UK. 🤔 Well, I mean, you can get them, but the paperwork required is ridiculous. Shotguns anyone can have, but rifles (rolling or falling block, lever or bolt action) requires a firearms certificate, a gun club membership, a purpose for the weapon (competition shooting, hunting etc), an interview with the police. You can't use them to defend yourself either, so it's pointless. No machine weapons or handguns at home (unless you're a farm vet, own a dangerous wild animal or work for the government). Farm vets have some of the highest suicide rates because after putting down sick ponies all day in traditional UK weather, that handgun starts looking real friendly. Poor bastards.

I can see your promise of new kitchen flooring turning into a FULL kitchen AND bathroom remodel REAL quick!! When I do stuff like this in my home shop, I prefer to use my variable speed rotary tool and its flex shaft for the finer work such as blending the bowls and guide bosses. The flex shaft is much easier to control and, with a good carbide burr, I can turn the speed down to reduce the risk of damaging the seat if I slip.

Any help will help! So they aren't all perfect, the only thing you can do is make it better, then later you can "make it better some more"!!!
