    It never made sense to me why ALL machines were perfectly habitable everywhere. Dust clogs up ventilation, water rusts metal, and circuits need to be the right temperature to function. The adaptations machines need to function in a real environment are just different from biological life, not necessarily better. Of course, its not unreasonable that some machines might be specifically designed to be perfect at exploring hostile landscapes, but it seems equally reasonable that some machines might have designs that are super efficient in one environment but break down in another, and it would require a massive overhaul of the entire production chain and/or a total redesign of the robots in question to overcome this.

    I like the idea of being able to tailor make robotic shells depending on the environment. Like a more industrial world would have a more robust and strong robotic frame. While something like an Ocean world would over fish/leviathan type creations. I also love the idea that we can just upload an entire consciousness to a Battleship. The Battleship itself is the shell housing someone.

    Perfect. Imo the machines not being immortal may not make sense to some, but from a gameplay perspective this change makes alot of sense. Even conceptually honestly. Stellaris zoomed out, 100 years is a long time. Unless the machine is well kept up with (parts are replaced) they will eventually stop working. Markus alraedy stated that there will be traits that willl help with the *age* of the robot. Generally, a game lasts (on default) from 2200-2600. Thats 400 years and while there may be some machines that can make it that far (represented within leaders) all cannot. Change makes things make alot of sense and helps with gameplay.

  • @Khalkara

    @Khalkara

    Hard disagree. There is no gameplay benefit to having machine leaders' effective lifespan be reduce like this. That would only be the case if somehow having lvl 10 leaders for a long time ruined game balance (which it doesn't). And yeah it seems only logical that a *machine* empire will continue to replace parts of its machine leaders to keep them running indefinitely. Why wouldn't they?

    @@Khalkara the thing is you can with leaders because (like they said) there can be traits and techs that expand that life span (which is essentially replacing parts) I am make a race from a biological standpoint that essentially live *forever* depending on what traits/techs/anoms I get, so now we can do the same as machine. Scaling wise, they said there was a 10% chance of them dieing and since that is gone now it's more like with bio's when you stack lifespan and they essentially don't die. It also makes actual immortality as a trait useful, and you can only get that a handful of ways.

  • @Michael-yf1wo
    @Michael-yf1wo2 ай бұрын

    This is a great step in the right direction of 'hard' sci-fi. Thank you! Hopefully machine empires will have enough unique traits to be interesting and have not been made too similar to bio builds. Referencing Montu's recent tier list video - will Species Traits get some kind of rebalance or overhaul? It's an essential element of base game Stellaris and it seems to me that @40-50% of "positive" traits are not beneficial. Base game Stellaris needs some love if we're going to add new players to the game. Ya'know, if someone casually picks up base game Stellaris to try out and finds this essential feature is full of less-than-helpful traits, those casual players aren't going to buy any DLC's. I don't like knowing that, outside of scratching any role-play itch, only a few Species Traits are worth selecting - that makes any species I create fairly repetitive. I'd like Species Traits that let me create a species that is more weird and unique. Thank you!

    I think a better mechanic for machine leaders would be upgrede/maintenance. At some point, be it random or planned, you will get a choice to scrap a leader or apend resources to fix/upgrade it, which will cause it to lose random traits and a few levels. Probably gain some new random too. So you might have the same old leaders, but after several upgrades they are like Ship of Thessious.

It would make sense if the robots were made of living metal or something like that, and I do believe superadvanced robots would never even need to improve or replace their parts, but as the other guy put it: our empires aren't supposed to be that advanced on the early game, so it makes sense you now need to research 10000 thousand techs or unlock some new tradition to achieve such "immortality". My favorite thing about being a Machine empire is the 100% compatibility on all planets (and not having to deal with trade or factions). Are these new degradations in Machines only if I get the new Machine Age DLC or are they being incorporated into the base game? In other words can I keep things the way they are as long as I don't buy this DLC?

    As long as you're still playing as a gestalt machine, trade or factions are still non-issues. But the habitability and lifespan changes are coming to all machines in all versions of Stellaris, so you'll actually have to consider those systems in future machine playthroughs (albeit still with a strong advantage over nearly all organics in both fields).

    It was an welcome lookout, as I was always disappointed from being cut-off to gestalt as a robotic species, especially as there are these ancient robotic refugees servants and if you enhance your species from biological to machines, you still can be many things... but machines from the beginning, (almost) just one possibility. Enjoying to seeing your faces... actually, no. No offense, but I don't really care about the companies employees private details, if your humanoid or a time-travelling, super-intelligent space dog from Jupiter. Maybe I'm just too misantrophic. Just keep on the good work and I will furthermore love the game, even if it's devour more and more of my money 😆

    @@schwingedeshaehersBecause it is not 10% per leader, but per empire. We currently loose a single leader every 100 years on average. Even with only 3 leaders employed at the same time, we already get an average lifespan of 200 years per leader (100, 200 and 300 respectively). With Syncronicity halving that chance, we are already at 400 years with 3 leaders and this just goes up with your leader count. 6 == 700, 9 == 1000, etc The 940 years was just the old number pre leader rework. All in all the 100 years PER LEADER is a massive downgrade.

    Hhhmmm, nerfing research and now nerfing robots, why are they destroying fun? Don’t get me wrong robots have always been powerful, but they are not as they once were. Still buying dlc, just to take a look and give it a try, you never know might be fun, the new civics and origins better be good.

    I for one welcome our rebalanced machine overlords, and look forward to actually having to make interesting choices about which worlds to settle first, as well as when to invest in habitability modifications and lifespan upgrades. The new machines will retain their edge over organics in those fields without being able to ignore them altogether, therefore making them less repetitive or bland to play as.
