Introduction
Every once in a while, we come across a special piano, and this is our opportunity to highlight one of those pianos; number fourteen of twenty-five Special Limited Edition John Lennon Hamburg Steinway A pianos.
Design
The uniqueness of this piano comes from its markings and the artwork with which it is adorned; the most obvious example is the music desk. Twenty-five different pieces drawn by Lennon were chosen, one per instrument produced. There is also a John Lennon-created graphic on the soundboard, an excerpt from the song "Imagine" printed on the iron frame, the quote, “You may say I’m a dreamer,” on the inside rim, a special edition plaque certifying its authenticity, and his signature on the front right side.
The piano is white, inspired by Lennon’s recording of "Imagine" on a white grand piano. Musically and structurally, it resembles a standard Model A; however, you will notice, due to its rounded gable, that this is a Hamburg versus a New York model.
Piano Tone
The Steinway Hamburg model A has a well-rounded balance, an appreciated feature since some other models can display a dynamic potential drop-off in the mid-treble range. This particular piano exemplifies that even bottom-to-top response as it has had very little usage; the hammers look brand new, as if they came straight from the showroom.
Shimmer
There is an appealing middle-ground shimmer in the top two to three octaves. This piano hosts a deliberate wash or shimmer in the top range, placing it between the sonic intensity of a Schimmel and the controlled effect of others with virtually no shimmer. Steinway lies in the middle, fitting with their tonal philosophy of focusing on the mid-tones of the instrument and blending the sound together.
Break Transition
The break transition on this model is very smooth, despite some Steinway models requiring a bit more specific voicing. The core design allows for a smooth transition through that section.
Duplexing
The precise management of the duplexing is what differentiates the New York and Hamburg models. On this specific model, the duplexing is carefully measured for clean intervals between two opposing strings, thereby slightly cleaning up the treble on a Hamburg model.
Treble Bell
Another admirable feature of the Model A is the treble bell, which allows for extra sideways pressure to create and maintain extra curvature or crown in the soundboard through the treble region, hence providing lively activation. The sweet spots are the mid to lower-mid range and also the top two octaves. Like many Steinway Hamburg grand pianos, there is great sustain and cabinet activation.

Hamburg Steinways and New York Steinways are very different animals sonically. They are both extremely well-built, but they do offer a very different musical experience to the player.

Thank you! Haha art is a very subjective thing of course. Beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. I will say that the artwork is definitely in line with the playful, curious character of John Lennon though. There is a beauty to authenticity and alignment between the actual person and the art they produce. :)

Hi! Brent from Merriam Music here! The Schimmel C169T is a wonderful instrument with a beautifully bright, clear voice! Unfortunately, we are not able to supply value estimates on instruments without actually getting to inspect them in person. The value of a used instrument is very dependent on its condition of course.

Beautiful sounding piano, but rather tacky and gimmicky attempt at being a “collectible”. I’ll take my Steinway in classic hand rubbed ebony. lol. I believe all current NY Steinway production has round “arms” or “shoulders” now as the cabinet styles have been aligned between both factories. The Steinway website for North America shows all pianos rounded.
