In this first session Lerato talks about how we can convey the mining industry in a greener direction while the demand for resources, especially critical minerals, will increase. Because with a growing population, secondary resources from reusing and/or recycling will not cover the demand. That is why mining will stay an important industry. But we are all aware that we can make this industry greener. Wet and chemical processes can be replaced with dry and greener technology. As the mining industry continues to evolve, advanced technologies and innovative methods are becoming increasingly important for efficient and sustainable processing.
Critical minerals are essential for modern technologies like electronics or renewable energy. Their scarcity and geopolitical challenges highlight the need for a secure supply to sustain economic growth, innovation, and national security while transitioning towards a sustainable and advanced future. It's our responsibility to ensure responsible mining that goes hand in hand with ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) related issues. By promoting sustainable practices, we can minimize environmental impacts.
