IF he wouldn't have trained her to be more like him, she would have been dead right now, she really would be so lost without him. He was with her best friend and also was her friend but never saw her until later

When he was ready to be with her he was to late she got tired of waiting for him

But it sad for Caroline she should've have grow old with him and start a family with him but he died to soon
